Square Enix Revives Ogre Battle on Nintendo's Wii
The latest Virtual Console release list has been released by Nintendo for the Japanese market, showing that Square Enix is resurrecting the long forgotten, and thought to be dead by many, Ogre Battle franchise that was previously owned by Quest (the company that Square Enix eventually swallowed). Seeing this SNES version appear is fantastic news for Strategy RPG fans everywhere, especially as in 1993 Enix released the game in the US, meaning a PAL début will be on the cards, as with the recent Hanabi Festival release of Super Mario RPG. It also bodes well for other Ogre Battle games to make an appearance on VC, such as Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber on the Nintendo 64.
Check out the full list below, which includes MegaMan 3, as well as Nihon Falcom's Xanadu for TurboGrafx-16, giving hope to those awaiting the quirky, but classic Famicom / NES spin-off RPG 'Faxanadu', which was licensed from Falcom, developed by Hudson and published by Nintendo:
Famicom / NES (500 Wii Points)
RockMan 3: Dr. Wily no Saigo!? (Capcom)
Smash Ping Pong (Nintendo)
Dragon Buster (Bandai Namco)
Super Famicom / SNES (800 Wii Points)
Densetsu no Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen (Square Enix)
Master System (500 Wii Points
Sonic The Hedgehog 2 (Sega)
Mega Drive (500 Wii Points
Senjou no Ookami II (Capcom)
PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16 (600 Wii Points)
Nekketsu Koukou Dodge Ball-Bu CD Soccer-hen (Naxat)
Volfied (Taito)
Kaze no Densetsu Xanadu (Nihon Falcom)
Cadash (Taito)
With Square Enix dredging up some real gems from its back catalogue, it will no doubt be just a matter of time before the likes of Bahamut Lagoon, Illusion of Time and Terranigma all appear on the download service.
