Do you know why we have a problem with the name Wii? Its quite simple, really:
Were seeing it spelled out. Now try saying it. We. The We. The Nintendo We. And all of a sudden, it doesnt sound as awkward anymore. Nintendo really has picked a name that resembles a Japanese Haiku. You have a very small amount of words and sounds put together to explain a very complex meaning (The Japanese Haiku is a three line poem. The first line has 5 syllables, the second has 7, and the last has five, meaning that all together it can only have 17 letters when written in Japanese, since a letter is actually a syllable).
Nintendo has devised a name that does a few things. First and foremost, it represents an idea and is symbolic of the Nintendo direction. The name Wii has a history and background, something that sounds everyday but is in actuality quite different. Its the same old and brand new. And thats the beauty of the name. It introduces not a system but an idea. It intrigues those who hear it, and most of them want to know what it means. In Nihon (Nipon, Japan, same thing. I just refuse to call a country by a name unused in that country), the name Wii is perfectly fine. Its short, sweet, different, and remember able. However, it will take some time to settle in the US. Its a good thing that it was released Pre-E3 so that we can get used to it now.
So why not Revolution?
The answer is actually two fold.
First, the name is practically unpronounceable in Nihon Go (Japanese). First, the sounds l and v are foreign to Nihon Go, and both are included in the name Revolution. Second, in casual conversation, very small words (easily pronounced too) are used in just about every country, and especially in Nihon. However, when Nintendos new console is barely pronounceable in every day conversation, it makes it quite awkward (just watch any video of Iwata-san saying Reworution and youll know what I mean).
Second, the name Revolution is intimidating. Sure, it sounds cool, but to a casual gamer or to someone who hasnt touched games in a long while, its scary. Games are already hard enough, why would I want to see them revolutionized and become harder? Thats just about the first thing thatll go through their mind. However, with a name like we, its bound to easier to understand and feel a lot more inclusive. Plus, imagine all the good marketing slogans you can create with Wii that doesnt have to do with changing gaming.
To all you Wii jokers out there:
It amazes me to what level the human mind can drop. It really seems like there is no limit to the immaturity of the human mind. Most men above the age of sixteen have a different name for the male organ. Most kids stop saying it after about five years old. That tells us that the average gamer online has the brain age of three-four years old. Congratulations. But really, most of the we jokes are old. I had some fun with a friend of mine making wii jokes, but at the end, we looked at each other and said Hey, wiire kinda used to the name now. So really, either grow up or shut up. When youll stop making Wii jokes, youll soon realize that most of the people are talking about the next great game coming to the wii, and generic names like PlayStation and Xbox are things of the past. We now need names with meaning. Besides, most people dont even refer to a gaming console by its full name. Most people say PS2 or GC or 360. Even the Revolution became The Rev. Soon enough The Wii will become NWI or something of the sort. So dont worry, all in all its just a name.
And thats my $.02

Zelda......![]()
