Visitors to the Taipei Game Show 2015 (held at the Taipei World Trade Centre from Jan. 28 to Feb. 2) were able to join in on some exclusive One Piece Pirate Warriors 3 action at the Sony booth presentation on Jan. 29. Some were given the opportunity to view some exclusive live gameplay with either Luffy, Law or Fujitora, and some were even given the possibility of playing it themselves.
Furthermore, an interview with two representatives of BNG and Tecmo Koei also gave us more insight as to what to expect from the game and how the current game came about.
While Pirate Warriors 1 was based on the manga’s main storyline, Pirate Warriors 2 featured an original twist to the storyline to try and give the game more of the “Dynasty Warriors” feel to it, something that was apparently an issue among many customers while playing Pirate Warriors 1. Unfortunately, Pirate Warriors‘s storyline with the extra non-canon elements weren’t appreciated by enough users for the creators to go back and aim to, yet again, create a Pirate Warriors game featuring only the series’s original storyline. Thus, as was already known, One Piece Pirate Warriors 3‘s story mode starts out when Shanks gives Luffy his straw hat and follows Luffy in his adventures through the Dressrosa Arc.
When asked what they would do with the Dressrosa Arc since it is not over yet in the manga, one of the representatives, Mr. Sasaki (not THAT Sasaki) asked fans to “expect/Look forward for Sabo as the focus.” Whether this means that Sabo will be the sole character around which the Dressrosa Arc of the game will focus was left ambiguous. That being said, we already know from previous trailers of the game that the Law-Doflamingo-Fujitora battle in Greenbit will indeed be happening, so that quote has definitely left me puzzled. Though I’m hoping this might indicate that we’ll get a Sabo P.O.V. of the Dressrosa Arc in the game, with possibly some information Oda has yet to reveal.
Furthermore, depending on the actions you take in the game, the events might also change. As to how they will be able to keep the main storyline while allowing for storyline versatility is unknown, so we hope they’ll give more news on how much the game might change from your own actions.
Apparently this game also includes parts of the story not handled in the previous games (Zoro and Usopp’s Arc, specfically) and will also add more NPC characters from the previous games to the playable characters roster in One Piece Pirate Warriors 3 . Original characters from the One Piece movies, however, will not appear in the game.
Of course, a big theme of the One Piece manga is the “bonds forged” among the characters, and because of that they added a new feature to the game: Bonds Rush (キズナラッシュ). This feature allows the player to combine his character’s special attack with one of his allies’s to perform an ultimate combo attack. According to the interview, there will be many possible unique combo attacks depending on which main character is combined with which ally, all for the players to discover. It is also possible to complement your own regular attacks with assists from your allies to form a consecutive series of attacks to defeat your enemies.
What we can also see from the gameplay in both videos you see above is, amongst others, that the storytelling is done in such a way to try and imitate the comic’s with the panel by panel video transition, similar to the previous games.
The latest Japanese Weekly Shonen Jump magazine (Issue 10, on sale Feb. 2) also revealed that Bellamy, Blackbeard, Jesus Burgess, Crocodile, Eneru, Wyper, Daz “Mr. 1″ Bones and Wapol will also be entering the fray together with Six Powers-user, Leopard model Zoan Devil Fruit-user and all around bad guy, Rob Lucci. Enjoy using the Six King Pistol to send your enemies flying with a terrible shockwave from your attack or even a Tempest Kick and unleash the (Pirate) Warriors’s spirit. A previous issue of Jump also mentions Don Krieg, Axe-Hand Morgan, Arlong and Captain Kuro to be added among the Playable Character roster, and if we are to believe the interview mentioned previously, there are many more to come!
