Yet another WiiWare title that will be hitting Japan soon. This one looks to be a sort of RPG/management/simulation title. It’ll end up costing 1,000 Nintendo Points, but there’s no word on a localization at this time.

Max and the Magic Marker hitting WiiWare - this one is looking good!

webbanner.jpg

Max & the Magic Marker is a physics based 2D platform game, in which the player controls the boy Max and his Magic Marker. While Max enables good old platforming fun, the marker pro*vides the game’s signature feature: the ability for the player to draw directly inside the game world where everything drawn becomes physical objects. This feature is used to complete levels and overcome challenges but it also provides the player with a unique tool that in itself is fun to play around with.

The objective of the Max project is:

• To reinvent and celebrate the 2D platformer
• To make a game that you can play with – not just play
• To utilize the drawing mechanic in an speedy action game
• To make a game that is for everyone

The story
Like most kids Max loves to draw. One day he gets a mysterious marker in the mail. There is no letter attached – only the plain orange marker. Max decides to test it right away, sits down and starts drawing. He draws a monster but as soon as he finishes the lines on the paper start moving and to Max’s great surprise the monster jumps off the paper and suddenly stands in all its glory in the middle of Max’ room. A couple of Max’ drawings lying around on the floor and without warning, the monster jumps right into one of them. Stunned by surprise Max now sees how the Monster starts messing around with his drawings, making them all weird painting moustaches on everything and messing things up. Max realizes that he has to follow the monster to set everything right. So he draws himself on the same drawing that the monster is in and immediately finds himself inside the drawing. The game begins.

Max is ten years old. He is the cool and creative boy every man thinks he once was. He is fast, agile, knows no fear and makes cool moves. Max has a magic marker that makes everything he draws come to life helping him on his adventures. The main enemy is “The Monster”. He is a wacko purple nut job of a monster. He is not really dangerous to Max as such, he does not bite, fight or shoot fireballs. But he provokes Max by messing with his drawings and when Max chases him he makes all kinds of obstructions to prevent Max from catching him. In some levels he challenges Max to duel in different disciplines, e.g. racing.

Controls
Max and the Magic Marker is in our opinion the perfect game for the Wii – making use of the nunchuck for Max’s movement and the Wii Remote for drawing.

Drawing
The drawing is of course Max & the Magic Markers unique feature and it is designed to make the game something that you want to play and experiment with. The most important mechanic of the drawing is of course that it draws physical shapes. Physics gets applied to the drawing when the player has drawn something and let goes of the pen. The more ink used in the shape, the heavier it will be. Drawings can be deleted by the player, or when left behind delete themselves, and the ink used will return to the marker.

Physics
It is not only with the drawing that physics is a central mechanic in Max & the Magic Marker. The whole game world is a physical environment and most challenges are based on physical objects and their behavior in relation to Max.

Audio
The audio in the game is made by Analogik, an ensemble renowned for their unique mix of balkan music and hip hop. It’s beautiful!

2D Boy - WiiWare accounts for 60% of World of Goo sales

A portion of a Reticule interview with 2D Boy's Ron Carmel and Kyle Gabler...
The Reticule: How successful has World of Goo been? Has it fared best on the PC or on the Wii?
Kyle: It’s been about 8 months since we released World of Goo, and our heads are still spinning. Now that we are really old men, we have taken time to reflect that quitting our jobs to make an indie game was not entirely a horrible life decision our parents and friends thought it would be. The little goo balls did change our lives though, and now nothing we ever do will ever be received as well, so nobody should ever buy games from 2D BOY anymore. WiiWare is responsible for about 60% of revenue. Windows/Mac/Linux versions account for 40%, with retail accounting for less than 2% of revenue so far.

Incoming is a fast-paced strategic combat game. The goal of which is to defeat your opponent by destroying their tanks using the arsenal and power-ups you have at your disposal. Advanced munitions and defense items become available at different levels of the game.

Las Vegas, NV, July 04, 2009 --(PR.com)-- JV Games Inc. is pleased to announce that Incoming!, rated “E” for everyone, will be available in July 2009 on WiiWare.

Be prepared to yell “Incoming!” while furiously avoiding flying cannonballs and missiles.

Incoming features two distinct games: A progressive single player game, advancing levels as you pit yourself against and increasingly difficult AI; or multiplayer mayhem where you and an opponent duel it out and see whose tanks are defeated first.

Heron: Steam Machine Announced for WiiWare

ron_index.png

Triangle Studios today announced that they are developing Heron: Steam Machine exclusively for WiiWare.

For many years, a mechanic named Ron has been working at the factory for Rubber Duckies. One day, the owner of the factory decided to retire, and leave the family business to his evil son, who has different plans with the factory altogether. The evil son doubled production targets for the factory, and as a result, Ron has to work at least twice as hard to keep up with the high demands of his new boss. The player has to help Ron out in the factory, and together they face the challenge of keeping the Steam Machine from breaking down.

In Heron: Steam Machine, players have to connect pipes to keep the Steam Machine running. You can play in singleplayer or co-op with friends. In Multiplayer Mode, players have to co-operate and connect each one of the pipes at the same time.

Heron: Steam Machine is planned to be released later this year.

Konami Announces WiiWare Plans for Europe

DRiiFT MANIA this month, Contra Rebirth in August.

13191.jpg

Konami already released Gradius Rebirth in Europe yesterday, but that won't stop them from releasing another game this month! To top things off, next month they'll be releasing a completely new Contra game which Japan has already been enjoying for a while.

DRiiFT MANIA, which will be released later this month, is an overhead racing game similar to certain classics. You can see the entire track on the screen, and the camera never moves - All you do is drive around, competing with the opposing racers while picking up and using powerups and items. It seems like it'll be good for some frantic fun, hopefully we are proven right!

In August, Europeans will be able to savour the delights of Contra Rebirth, the latest game in the Contra franchise (Only the first few games in the series were changed to "Probotector" in Europe, by the way!). You once again take control of one or two (With a friend) soldiers as you blast your way through multiple stages, dodging the hundreds of thousands of one-hit kill attacks the enemy throws your way. Sean posted his first impressions of the game a while ago, in case you missed them. Looking good!

Konami has also announced the release of Gradius Rebirth, but they're a bit too late for that! The full press release is below:

THRii for WiiWare from Konami

Publisher details new Network Business Development department, as Konami's first WiiWare titles are unveiled

Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH has announced its first downloadable WiiWare titles, as it outlines the role of its new Network Business Development Department.

Konami has created the all-new Network Business Development Department, which is designed to extend Konami’s online activities across Europe. The new team is headed by Florian Stronk, who will oversee all future downloadable content and mobile titles, including WiiWare, PSN, XBLA and DSiWare as well as iPhone and other mobile phone platform releases.

The first titles to emerge from the group will be released in the coming months, with Gradius Rebirth out today, followed by DRiiFT MANIA later this month, and the all-action Contra Rebirth in August. Each title is an all-new game, with Gradius Rebirth marking the welcome return of one of gaming’s most acclaimed shooters of all time.

Gradius Rebirth retains the 2D space-based action the series is famed for, with players guiding their Vic Viper ship through a series of horizontally-scrolling stages infested with thousands of aliens and huge end-of-level bosses. Power-up capsules allow the user to add lasers, secondary weapons systems, shields, etc, to their craft, while new additions include a Score Attack Mode wherein high-scores can be compared, and a Replay system where hard-fought battles can be reviewed.

DRiiFT MANIA will follow later in July, and is a top-down racer that allows up to eight players to race each other, using cartoon-style characters. Featuring twelve different tracks based on four themed environments – cityscape, hills, snow and a desert oasis – players can also select one of 34 vehicles from four categories. Each category is tailored for use within the different environments, with variations of speed, acceleration and handling and grip levels making specific vehicles ideal for particular locations.

DRiiFT MANIA ‘s multi-player modes allow users to play using combinations of Wii Remotes, Nunchucks and Classic Controllers, and seven game modes are on offer. These include single-player and multi-player championships, and Team Race; wherein participants are divided into two teams, with the winner those that amass the most points. The VIP mode elects one player per team as a VIP vehicle, who must be protected at all costs from the opposition cars, with the removal of the VIP car resulting in a win for the attacking team.

DRiiFT MANIA also has a fun ‘Contamination’ idea, where a player is marked contagious and must contaminate very other player within a set period, while ‘Cold Potato’ mode charges the user with collecting said vegetable and holding on to it for as long as possible! Finally, the ‘Meteorite’ option sees players embarking on a normal race, while trying to avoid a series of meteors as they fall from the sky.

Completing the trio in August is Contra Rebirth, a welcome return for Konami other celebrated shoot ‘em up series. Armed soldiers are charged with running and jumping through a series of 2D levels, each littered with alien forces, vehicles and face-offs with massive bosses. OTT weaponry is the order of the day as homing missiles, flame-throwers and high-powered lasers are used to blast a path to the end of each stage, while agility and dexterity are required to clamber over seemingly impassable areas, and scale crumbling buildings.

The Network Business Development Department will also be overseeing the release of Konami’s previously announced Vandal Hearts and Zombie Apocalypse titles for PSN and XBLA. “We have an enviable starting line-up, and are looking to continually offer a strong mix of updated classic Konami IPs and new ideas,” commented Florian Stronk, Head of the Network Business Development Department for Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH. “Using a mixture of both internal and external talent, we look forward to some very exciting announcements in the coming months.”

Hudson Possibly Bringing Shootanto Kakohen Overseas

larget.jpg

Siliconera has found a US Trademark filing which appears to indicate that Hudson are undertaking the localisation of Grand Prix's 2008 arcade-style shooter Shootanto: Kakohen in what is sure to please folk curious about this currently Japanese-only title.

The game was released in December 2008 and got some attention due to its off-beat concept of having the player control a monkey who throws coconuts and bombs at various prehistoric beasties coming towards the bottom of the screen in a gameplay style reminiscent of classic arcade games Cabal and Blood Brothers. The monkey gradually evolves into a human, while foes range from dinosaurs to giant bugs, sabre cats and lizard men through three stages that can be tackled by 1 or 2 players.

According to the filing the game will be called Shootanto: Evolutionary Mayhem, though Hudson have yet to make any official announcement. This marks their first time publishing a WiiWare title from another developer.

Grand Prix is also working on a sequel to Shootanto: Kakohen (Past Chapter) called Shootanto: Miraihen (Future Chapter).

Interviews: ColorZ - Exkee

medium.jpg

We talk to Exkee about their upcoming WiiWare release.

With the upcoming July 24th release of Exkee's first WiiWare offering ColorZ, we thought it might be a good time to get in touch with the developers in order to find out a bit more about the game.

Romain Streichemberger, Production Director at Exkee, was kind enough to take time out of his busy schedule to answer some of our questions. You can find out what he had to say to Nintendo Life in the interview below.

Nintendo Life: Can you tell us a bit about your company to start with?

Romain Streichemberger:
Exkee was created in 2003 and now is based in Marseille, France. We first began with the mobile phone industry, we did some porting like Tomb Raider: Legend and Age of Empire. Then last year we released a PC Game called I-Fluid. It's available as a retail release and also on downloadable websites like Steam, Nexway, etc… Then we decided to move to the console platform. Wii is our best target for now.

Get a move on!

medium.jpg

NL: How long has ColorZ been in development?

RS: The development of ColorZ took approximately 1 year.

NL: How did you come up with the idea for ColorZ in the first place?

RS: First, our goal with Colorz was to do a very innovative game and also we really wanted to take advantage of the WiiMote capacities. It came to my mind the idea of controlling multiple entities for a single player and the idea of using color properties.

NL: Can you tell us a bit more about the actual gameplay in the game?

medium.jpg

RS: The story is simple - a new virus polluted the universe and you have to clear all the microbes. The main property is that you can eat a microbe if it is of the same color as yours. The complexity is based on the fact that you can drive up to 3 UFO’s and you can do fusion! For example if you have to eat Yellow microbes then you have to make fusion between the red one and the green one. It’s the light color addition rule.

The gangs all here!

NL: We've heard the game compared to Ikaruga in terms of the color-switching game play feature. Did Ikaruga or any other games have any direct influence on ColorZ?

RS: Yeah absolutely! I am a huge fan of shoot’em ups. Cave and Treasure are for me the best 2 developers for shmups. Ikaruga inspired me with the idea of eating bullets depending on the color of your ship. But ColorZ is very different from Ikaruga. Your UFOs can be Red, Green or Blue and you can also do the fusion to get more colors. You can also drive multiple UFO’s at the same time AND you cannot shoot! So ColorZ is a shoot’em up, but you cannot shoot!! LOL

medium.jpg

NL: What controllers are supported in the game?

RS: In Solo Mode you have to play with the Wii Remote and Nunchuk, but in Multiplayer mode you can play with the Wii Remote only.

ColorZ artwork

NL: ColorZ has a very vibrant visual style? Was there a concerted effort to make the game visually dynamic?

RS: The game is based on the colors, so we really wanted a vibrant style. Simple but efficient!

NL: What makes ColorZ stand out from many of the other WiiWare releases we've seen so far?

medium.jpg

RS: ColorZ gameplay is really unique; you have a feeling when driving multiple UFOs that is totally new. Solo mode will be a tough challenge and the multiplayer is REALLY great. The cooperation in multiplayer is absolutely amazing. You have to talk to each player like “Hey Red Player come with me! We have to make fusion in order to pass these yellow microbes!!” It’s very funny!!

NL: Do you know when we can expect a release of ColorZ in the various regions?

Spiraling out of control!

RS: In Europe, the game is approved by Nintendo, so we hope for a release really soon. As for North America, we are currently doing certification with Nintendo. As for Japan, we'd love to release it if a publisher is interested.

NL: Has a price point been set yet?

RS: No, the price has not been set yet, but it is going to be a low price. We want the maximum number of players to live the ColorZ experience! ^^ (The price has since been confirmed to be 700 Nintendo Points)

NL: Did you find it challenging to stay within the 40MB file size limitation of the WiiWare service?

RS: Yes, it is very challenging. Our game uses 2d animation, so it’s very consuming in terms of storage. The music and sound FX are also consuming. But I think the size limitation is a challenge, not a real problem. Your creativity is not proportional to a size limit

Mass hysteria!

NL: Are there any WiiWare titles that have really impressed you?

RS: There are great games on WiiWare like Lost Winds or World of Goo. But I want to salute Icarian : Kindred Spirit. It has some great gameplay and is great looking. I am sure the young Spanish development team behind it will do more brilliant games. Salute to Roberto.

NL: Do you currently have any other projects in development?

RS: Yes, we are currently working on a new Wiiware project…

NL: Is there anything you'd like to say to our readers in closing?

RS: Thank you for reading me!

NL: We thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to take part in this interview.

RS: It’s my pleasure!

Again we here at Nintendo Life would like to take the time to thank Romain for taking the time to do the interview with us. You can also check out the official gameplay trailer below for a taste of what the game has to offer.
