ESRB rates Tecmo's Wiimote-shaking WiiWare game, more C64 VC games

Tecmo's Atsui 12 Game Furi Furi Party was initially revealed at TGS as a barebones WiiWare game that did nothing but score players based on the speed of their waggling. When it was released in Japan late last month, it appeared to be much more full-featured, with multiple modes and, you know, graphics.

We'll have our chance to experience the Furi Furi Party in the future! The ESRB has posted a rating for a Tecmo Wii game called 3-2-1 Rattle Battle. Rattle Battle! It's pretty catchy.

In other ESRB news, two more Commodore 64 games have been rated for release on the Wii: Impossible Mission and Boulder Dash.

Zoonami's Hollis: More 'Living Room Social' Games Needed

spudsworth.jpg

Zoonami founder and Goldeneye N64 director Martin Hollis has been discussing his new WiiWare title Bonsai Barber and accessible games with Gamasutra, suggesting that humor in games is key to "a living room social" game experience.

Talking as part of an in-depth Gamasutra interview, Bonsai Barber is a downloadable WiiWare casual game aimed at the "new core", as Hollis puts it.

It puts you in charge of sculpting the heads of trees to match haircuts, using only the Wii remote and a range of tools including scissors, clippers, and a spray tool to grow foliage.

Even more interestingly, you are only permitted to cut five trees per day, with the game's extra features being unlocked over time if you play for just a few minutes every day.

Talking about humorous elements present in the title, and arguing for the importance of comedy and social aspects in gaming, Hollis explains:

"There should be a whole genre like it is for movies. And this is trying to be a comedy game. Really -- we've put a huge amount of work into that.

I mean, that could be our genre. It's supposed to be like a TV show -- Friends! This is one of our models for this game. This is supposed to be like Friends.

So, that's like another answer to your question, "how do you engender that in a design sense for the living room?" A bunch of people can sit in the living room and enjoy Friends, and maybe half of them are only half paying attention.

And you can have a conversation, dip in and out, get a few jokes here and there. If people are laughing, they're laughing together, and that brings the room together into a group. A comedy like that is perfect for a living room social... It's entertainment."

Karate Phants: Gloves of Glory Screens

Karate Phants: Gloves of Glory is a fighting game from the looks of it and is up to two players. It looks like it will come out sometime this year. Their is a German cartoon called The Ottifants back in the 70’s that was real popular and that is what the Karate Phants is based off. Noting on their website and I’m trying to get more from them.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time Remake Coming to WiiWare

At last week's Galabunga events in NYC, the debut of the Turtles' Party Van also revealed that a "new" TMNT video game - not the already revealed "Smash-up" game for the Wii - was in development. New, yet a game all TMNT fans are familiar with: "Turtles in Time." Only now it's been updated using modern 3D graphics. Mega TMNT fan Jason Koza was at the event (in his Casey Jones costume!) and provides the following info and pics of the game.

  • The game is set up and directly taken from TMNT Turtles in Time.
  • Right now it's only going to be for Xbox Live, but they're working on bringing it to Wii (Virtual Console Wiiware?).
  • It has the same music as the old game.
  • Only the levels "Alleycat Blues" and "Skull and Crossbones" were playable.
  • The only difference noticed was the bosses for the "Skull and Crossbones" are Tokka and Rahzar (unlike the original, which had Bebop and Rocksteady).
  • For Alleycat Blues the boss is still Metalhead.
  • The game is basically Turtles in Time with new graphics - Awesome!

Sexy Poker Headed to WiiWare

sexy2006_1.gif

It seems the WiiWare service just got a little sexier

According to the German USK ratings service, Gameloft's Sexy Poker title is headed to Nintendo's WiiWare service.

As you might imagine, the game is basically a video game version of strip poker. The female players place bets using their own clothing instead of money.

Since Nintendo is quite well-known as being the "family-friendly" console, we don't see much chance of this title ever making it to North America. Of course Nintendo has been trying to change their "kiddy" image as of late, so maybe this is one extreme they're going to in an effort to change it permanently. We seriously doubt it.

Chillingo: 'We've got a Rolando killer with a 3D twist'

rolando.jpg

iPhone games publisher Chillingo says it plans to make the most of the upcoming iPhone 3.0 software, and has revealed details of some truly exciting-sounding games.

"We have several titles in the works that will use iPhone 3.0 in-app purchasing, including several multiplayer games where you'll be able to purchase new characters and equipment," director Chris Byatte tells Pocket Gamer.

"Plus we have a simultaneous release lined up for WiiWare and iPhone - a true Rolando killer with a 3D twist - it will include the ability to purchase new worlds. We also have several multiplayer games in the pipeline that will make full use of the excellent push notification 3.0 technology."

We can't wait, and it's interesting to see a company like Chillingo spreading its wings beyond iPhone. However, in the shorter term, Byatte is as excited about upcoming iPhone releases Knights Onrush and Circuit Strike.One.

"We're having a blast with the iPhone - at last a genuinely exciting game platform has risen from the mobile industry ashes," he says.

"We're working with a large number of studios to bring truly innovative titles to iPhone. Circuit Strike. One is just a few weeks away from release. It's an incredible title, built from the ground up by the very talented H.Grenade studios. Get ready for some eye-splitting bullet-time vector based fun. There's nothing like it so far - it's a genre-defining project."

Byatte admits that the App Store is a hugely competitive environment right now for publishers, and is only going to become more so in the months ahead.

However, he's confident that Chillingo can ensure its games aren't buried beneath the crowd. "The job of the publisher is to cut through the clutter through well managed pre-launch, launch and post-launch plans," he says.

"As an example, WiiWare game Toki Tori is coming to iPhone in a deluxe version which is already getting rave previews. We're about to launch a competition to give away figurines of Toki Tori."

As an iPhone publisher, Chillingo is talent-spotting developers constantly, and Byatte says submissions are "coming thick and fast", with polish and innovation the key factors he's looking for before signing a deal.

He cites another upcoming title, Underground, as an example. "It's a unique blend of formats: a horror/graffiti/shooter interwoven with surreal cut-scenes, all packaged up into a stunning game with its own unique identity."

However, as that WiiWare/iPhone game mentioned earlier in this interview shows, Chillingo isn't just focused on iPhone and the App Store. How about other mobile platforms like Android, N-Gage and BlackBerry?

"We have titles lined up for all the new app stores," says Byatte. "That said it's clear that Apple has the lead right now - the other players will need to run fast in order to catch up."

Swords & Soldiers hits Europe May 15, US 'soon'

swords-and-soldiers-screenshot-small.jpg

Ronimo Games, developer of Wii sleeper de Blob, has announced that its next game -- the side-scrolling FPS Swords & Soldiers -- will hit Europe on May 15. The distinctly designed WiiWare release will cost 1000 points.

"B-but what about us?," you ask. We're assuming you're in the US, so we have some good (albeit vague) news: Ronimo has also confirmed that game will hack-'n'-slash its way Stateside soon after the EU release. Here's hoping that "soon" means the following Monday, May 18.

VC/WiiWare Tuesday: Contra and more

contra051109.jpg

Today's Virtual Console and WiiWare offerings in Japan are shockingly good. So good that if a release week like this happened outside of Japan even once every six months or so, nobody would complain about Nintendo's downloads. Even if we ignore the three WiiWare games that are already out in North America, it's wall-to-wall quality.

Well, we're kind of assuming that Contra Rebirth is quality. Even if it's terrible, we know we're in for a $10 download of an original Contra game when it shows up here. We know that the WiiWare Art Style games are fantastic, because we've been playing them since last year.

On Virtual Console, the PC Engine CD-ROM version of SimEarth and the arcade release of the brutal Tower of Druaga pale before Downtown Special, a Japan-only sequel to River City Ransom starring Kunio and friends as samurai.

Virtual Console:

  • Downtown Special: Kunio-kun no Jidaigeki Dayo Zenin Shuugo (Famicom, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points)
  • SimEarth (PC Engine, 1 player, 800 Wii Points)
  • The Tower of Druaga (Arcade, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points)

WiiWare:

  • Art Style: CUBELEO (1 player, 600 Wii Points)
  • Art Style: DIALHEX (1-2 players, 600 Wii Points)
  • Art Style: ORBITAL (1 player, 600 Wii Points)
  • Contra Rebirth (1-2 players, 1,000 Wii Points)

DETHGAME trademark surfaces for game based on Metalocalypse

dethklok0515_580.jpg

The world's most famous band, Dethklok, is set to invade the games market, as a recent trademark filing by Cartoon Network suggests. This downloadable title will be called METALOCALYPSE: DETHGAME, and could be as jarring and invasive as something spelled with all capital letters suggests. Oh, and we're sure there will be blood. Lots of blood and guts, because that's metal.

The trademark suggests describes DETHGAME as "downloadable video games distributed via the internet," though no other specific information was mentioned. So, we're not sure if this potential game is planned for PC only, or if it will arrive on home consoles. With the creators of the show forming their own game company, we wonder if they'll have a hand in this.

Mecho Wars Confirmed For WiiWare and DSiWare Release

mockup__r148320001.png

Luc Bernard spills the beans in drunken video preview

It's been a while since we heard from our old mate Luc Bernard but then he has been a pretty busy chap lately. He's moved to the US, founded his own development studio and is currently putting the finishing touches to the iPhone title Mecho Wars.

The game is shaping up nicely and owes a massive debt to the Nintendo classic Advance Wars, which is certainly no bad thing.

Luc has just posted a video online in which he reveals that the game is going to be released on both WiiWare and DSiWare. He'd also rather drunk in the video, and as a result it contains several pieces of bad language - so consider this NSFW or for the ears of easily offended people. Footage of the game is also included.

Wow, third new WiiWare title of the night! This game is hitting Japan in late 2009, and will cost 700 Nintendo Points. There are 3 modes of play to choose from; Game A, Game B and Quick Shot. The game will offer 2-player local support, as well as a WFC aspect that seems to point to online leaderboards.
