Crystal Defenders R1 and R2 Coming to Europe Soon As Well!

medium.jpg

It's not just Taito properties that Square Enix will be releasing on WiiWare in April and May - They're also releasing the Final Fantasy spinoff Crystal Defenders, which comes in two parts - Crystal Defenders R1 and Crystal Defenders R2.

Crystal Defenders was previously released on iPhone and Xbox Live Arcade, with a PlayStation Network release coming soon as well. It's basically a Tower Defense clone - Those seem to be really popular lately!

Square Enix's press release is below:

London (3rd April 2009) – Square Enix Ltd., the publisher of Square Enix® interactive entertainment products in Europe and other PAL territories, today announces the release of two downloadable titles for WiiWare™. The first of these defensive simulation games, CRYSTAL DEFENDERS™ R1 will be available for download in April, while a release date for CRYSTAL DEFENDERS™ R2 will be announced at a later stage.

Featuring jobs and locations from the popular FINAL FANTASY TACTICS® series, CRYSTAL DEFENDERS requires players to strategically deploy units to fend off encroaching enemy hordes and prevent them from stealing their party’s crystals.

The WiiWare version includes several improvements to the interface and a new design optimized for consoles. A worldwide ranking system allows players to upload their scores to leaderboards and see how they stack up against other players around the globe. These and other new features are sure to increase excitement and enhance replayability.

John Yamamoto, president and chief executive officer of Square Enix Ltd. comments, “The release of these two CRYSTAL DEFENDERS titles on WiiWare demonstrates Square Enix’s commitment to providing new downloadable content, meeting the needs of its customers. CRYSTAL DEFENDERS combines easy pick-up and play mechanics, great depth and an addictive quality that make it ideal for the platform. I hope that many people experience and enjoy it.”

About CRYSTAL DEFENDERS R1

Story
In a land ruled by might and magick, peace is ensured by the benevolent power of the crystals. When a young moogle charged with guarding these crystals learns of an evil presence gathering on the horizon, he calls upon heroes from the far corners of the realm to join forces and stand against this new threat.

Wielders of blade and bow, keepers of arts arcane, unite! As darkness draws nigh, only you can protect the light that binds us. The fate of Ivalice lies in the hands of…the Crystal Defenders!

Features
CRYSTAL DEFENDERS R1 is a defensive simulation game in which players deploy characters from the FINAL FANTASY TACTICS® series onto a variety of different maps to battle wave after wave of encroaching monsters. The first game in the series, Crystal Guardians, was released in Japan for mobile phones in January 2008. In December of the same year, iPhone 3G, iPod touch and iPod versions were released under the new name, CRYSTAL DEFENDERS. To date, the total number of downloads for the series have reached over 800,000.

CRYSTAL DEFENDERS R1 is simple and easy to learn – monsters will enter an area and march through it until they are defeated or reach an exit, at which time they will steal one or more crystals. It is up to the player to decide – by pausing the action at crucial moments – when and where to deploy various jobs such as Black Mages or Soldiers that will attempt to defend the party’s crystals. Factors such as map terrain, monster strengths and weaknesses, job attributes, and more will play a crucial role in determining what steps a player should take.

WiiWare mech combat game Overturn turns westward

overturn0406.jpg

Studio Zan's Overturn looked great when it came out in Japan last December. Well, seemed great -- the graphics are a bit rough. The WiiWare mech combat game had some pretty enticing features: both local and online multiplayer, and even Balance Board compatibility. The only feature it lacked was a known Western publisher.

We're thrilled to learn that Gamebridge, a new European publisher formed from a partnership between Japanese publisher Interchannel and Nintendo distributor Bergsala, has picked up Overturn for the European market, to be published as Overturn: Mecha Wars. We've contacted Gamebridge to determine whether the release is also planned for North America, but at the very least, a localized version will make the game more enticing for potential American publishers. Gamebridge will release more details about the price and date in May.

Rumor: BBC iPlayer getting dedicated Wii channel

bbciplayer580.jpg

According to Cubed3, Nintendo has approved plans for the BBC to release a dedicated iPlayer Channel for the UK market. Sources tell the British tech site that the BBC plans to launch the Wii Channel in Q2 2009, and that the service will be comparable in quality to the current mobile iPlayer services. Improvements are allegedly planned for a future version.

In October, the official BBC blog revealed it had optimized the iPlayer for the Nintendo Wii after previously mentioning the possibility of a dedicated channel for the service.

Cubed3 also reports that the broadcasting channel is looking to expand into video game development, but no franchises were mentioned. Can anyone say Bargain Hunt: The Game?

Squibs Arcade - LCD Madness From Alten8

medium.jpg

Squibs Arcade is certainly one of the more unique upcoming WiiWare titles we have come across. It’s basically a parody of all the top rated titles for Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii, oh yeah and Assassins Creed too! The trick is all these modern games are stripped down to their core gameplay essentials and presented as a LCD game from yesteryear.

Our pals over at Alten8 assure us that the game will appeal to many different audiences including kids, causal players and hardcore fans who will ‘get’ all the in-jokes.

All these games will come in one bundle package for the bargain price of just 500 Nintendo points.

See below the fold for the gameplay trailer and screenshot gallery.

Here’s more about the game from Alten8:

SQUIBS ARCADE is a collection of classic favourites based on the old style of LCD games including Clown, Gun Cogs, Crowd Wader, Button Basher, Fantasy Turn Base, Call of Honour, Jack-a-Motor, Lots of Levelling, Cardboard Axel Mush, We're Fat, and Regret the Fist.

Alten8 believes it appeals to both casual game players, but also hardcore game fans. There’s a great variety of fun gameplay across the collection: in Clown move the clown’s hands to where the bombs are going to land or BOOM!; follow the beat of the music in Button Basher; live through monster battles in Fantasy Turn Base or Jack as many cars as you can and avoid the police and breaking down in Jack-a-Motor and in We’re Fat, Shigeru wants us to get healthy, so aim to avoid the cakes and eat the carrots.

First Impressions: Puzzle Bobble Wii

medium.jpg

Taito delivers another enjoyable update to an arcade franchise.

For those who aren't familiar Puzzle Bobble is a late-90s arcade puzzle franchise from Taito featuring Baburun and Boburun from Bubble Bobble. Fans in the rest of the world may remember this game better as the ill-titled "Bust-A-Move." It's had five arcade iterations, two of which were ports on the Neo Geo MVS (Bust-A-Move and Bust-A-Move Again) and numerous home console and handheld releases.

medium.jpg

The game doesn't disappoint in terms of the actual content: you get a new set of Puzzle Bobble levels using the 3D rendered character model from Bubble Bobble Wii and the usual series of chained colourful bubbles (all containing Bubble Bobble baddies) that you try to pop by shooting your own coloured bubbles at them in an attempt to make groupings of three or more. You have a timer that counts down and the platform the coloured bubbles hang from will descend incrementally to pressure you as you attempt to clear the screen. As was typical of the series following the first game you get to choose from a couple dozen levels via branching paths arranged in an inverted triangle formation so that there's plenty of replay value since you'll only experience six or seven of these in a single game -- assuming you can clear all of them! If the default difficulty doesn't suit you there's an option to change to Easy or Hard from the default Normal difficulty.

medium.jpg

Bust those Bubbles!

If that wasn't enough there are two extra puzzle packs. As with Bubble Bobble Wii these aren't actually extra downloads, but unlockable content -- only a new 1 block file is downloaded which contains the unlock data -- and they are 200 points each as with the Bubble Bobble Wii extra level packs. For a moment I was quite excited about these because going into the game shop area the first was indicated as "Puzzle Bobble 2" and the second "Super Puzzle Bobble" and "Puzzle Bobble 3" -- for a moment I thought this meant I was going to get emulated versions of these arcade games, but I was slightly disappointed to find that actually these are a selection of levels from these three games. All told you're paying 1200 points and get three different single player Puzzle Bobble games that fit in 254 blocks. Not too bad!

Of course there's also Battle Mode which in typical Puzzle Bobble fashion can be played against a 2nd human player or against the computer. Against the computer you face a series of 8 enemies from the original Bubble Bobble game and can choose from 8 different play modes every time you play. Your opponents will increment through boards labelled A-H which have different properties that increase the difficulty by having different colour patterns, causing bubbles to appear when opponents clear groupings, adding rainbow bubbles which act as blockers until adjoining bubbles are cleared, and having bubbles decent with more to clear after set intervals. It's a good way to allow the player to control the level of challenge faced.

Bob versus Bub in a Battle for Bubble Supremacy!

The basic menu presentation is a bit lacking and the music isn't as catchy as the music in Bubble Bobble Wii, but the in-game backgrounds are nice space scenes with constellations and crystals and the game itself looks and plays well. I would like to have seen the full cast of crazy characters from Puzzle Bobble 2-4 in the Battle Mode with the accompanying story, so I'd still like to see emulated versions of the Puzzle Bobble arcade games, and given that a four-player version of Puzzle Bobble has appeared on the Dreamcast -- and the presence of four-player play in Bubble Bobble Wii -- limiting Battle Mode to two-players seems odd. Those issues aside, my Puzzle Bobble fix has been provided. Cheers, Taito!

Konami: VC Arcade Support and WiiWare Life Force

medium.jpg

Another big developer jumps on the VCA bandwagon!

Before publishers rerelease their old games on VC, they're required to renew the trademarks for them - a bunch of classic Konami trademarks appeared today, which seems to indicate they're going to be releasing arcade games as well!

Konami has registered these new VC-related trademarks:

  • Green Beret (Arcade or NES, retitled Rush'n Attack in the US)
  • Gyruss (Arcade or NES)
  • Meikyuu Jiin Dababa (FDS)
  • Life Force (Arcade - It has to be, the NES version's already available!)
  • Salamander (The Japanese title for Life Force)
  • Yie Ar Kung-Fu (Arcade - It also has to be, because Japan has the NES version already.)

But that's not all! There's also a trademark for Salamander ReBirth, indicating that Gradius ReBirth wasn't a one-off - Life Force is getting a new game as well!

If that's not enough, Namco has registered two classic trademarks as well - They'll be rereleasing the arcade games Baraduke and Galaxian - Galaga's predecessor!

LIT Officially Headed to Europe

medium.jpg

European gamers can finally breathe a sigh of relief as WayForward's LIT is on its way to the European WiiWare service.

Although we've already seen hints here and there regarding LIT_'s eventual European WiiWare release, the guys at WayForward decided to make it official today with their announcement that LIT is indeed coming to the European WiiWare service. If you don't believe us, you can check out the official press release below.

Valencia, Calif. – April 8, 2009 – After leading North American gamers through the darkness, WayForward Technologies today announced that their critically acclaimed inaugural WiiWare title, LIT, will be released in PAL territories early this summer.

Released in North America in February 2009, LIT has earned a cult following due in large part to its unique horror/puzzle gameplay and grotesquely alluring art style. Offering 30 challenging puzzle rooms, 5 boss battles, multiple endings, an unlockable second character, and a fiercely challenging Dark Mode, LIT provides tremendous value to gamers looking for a uniquely dark experience on Nintendo’s WiiWare platform.

“We are really excited to see this title distributed in PAL territories,” says WayForward CEO John Beck. “We think that the game appeals to a truly diverse audience, and are excited to see that apply across the globe.”

"The critical and fan response to LIT in North America has been overwhelmingly positive, it's really been amazing,” says LIT director Adam Tierney. “Gamers have seemed to form a real connection to the title, which was important to us as this was a very personal project for WayForward. We are excited and proud now to be able to offer the game to our European fans. Thanks for waiting, and enjoy your emo."

LIT does not yet have a price point for its PAL release. The game will include all of the features of the North American release in addition to an enhanced and improved control scheme.

About LITT

LIT is a 3D horror puzzler set in a dark high school overrun by creatures. The game follows Jake, a below-average student and the game's protagonist, as he makes his way through each classroom, utilizing what light he can find to create safe paths across the darkness. Jake's objectives are to escape his school and reconnect with his girlfriend, Rachael, who uses the school’s phones to keep in contact with him. LIT combines environmental puzzling with horror combat and boss battles to create a uniquely unsettling Nintendo Wii experience.

About WayForward Technologies

In operation since 1990, WayForward Technologies has partnered with leading software publishers in bringing critically and commercially successful software across the Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, PC, Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, Nintendo DSi and Nintendo Wii platforms.
