Nintendo Wii Ware und VC News

VC Friday: Clu Clu Lair

clu30609.jpg

This week on the PAL Wii Shop, two Virtual Console games have been added to the selection. One of the new releases is a somewhat underappreciated Nintendo game, and the other is a previously underappreciated game that is now way overexposed, thanks to the Virtual Console.

If you've never played the NES's Clu Clu Land before, be prepared for confusing controls that will eventually give way to a pretty fun vintage-style maze game. If you've never played the Genesis's Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair before, don't -- download the Turbografx-16 CD version instead for the same price!

Cave Story blog update - game should release in late April/May, DLC in the works…and music with lyrics?

Quotey.png

Tyrone
Hello! I hope you missed us. Sorry for the break. There’s a reason we’ve been MIA for the last couple of weeks. No, we’re still not dead–we’re officially in crunch mode and trying our best to wrap up Cave Story! If all goes well, you’ll be playing Cave Story by the beginning of May or even end of April. Instead of a simple one-liner, we wanted to update everyone with a relatively complete item list of what we’ve been working on.

On my end, I’ve been working on finalizing the three versions of the manual. For North America, the Online Manual is required to be in English, Spanish and French. I’ve written the English version and I’m currently, slowly, translating it to spanish. Yann will be helping me with the French version. Aside from that I’ve been testing the game as much as possible and making sure we’re ready for localized versions of the game later this year.

Pixel and I have been discussing what we have in mind for DLC. We have a few new ideas that I think you’ll like. On the artwork side, I’ve been going through each file, one by one in the game making sure that the new artwork appears just way it should. We’ve pushed a pixel here or there on a few files. Oh yeah, we’ve also been translating some interviews for Pixel–you might want to keep an eye on The Escapist and Tigsource very soon.

Tiffany
You haven’t seen updates free me because I’ve been busy typing away at code. On the programming front since the last update, I have fixed up the .org player and made some additional fixes to the graphics.

Also, I’ve spent some time working on the DLC support which Ty just mentioned, making sure that the game will be able to support all the new content that we have planned over the months following the initial release.

Some bug fixes have been made and additional music and artwork have also been added. My next port of call is to focus on more DLC stuff, bug fixes and Lotcheck. In case you’re not familiar with the term Lotcheck, it’s Nintendo’s internal submission process for developers and publishers. Basically it’s just checking that we are following all of Nintendo’s protocols, providing a good framework for the downloadable content and making sure that we ship a solid and bug free game.

Yann and Nicklas
Hey, it’s Yann. Nicklas and I have been quite busy finalizing the new audio for Cave Story. First I made midi versions of the existing songs, with some modifications or new arrangements of them. All these song have been sent to Pixel for his approval; he gave us some feedback and we’ve since made the changes, as he requested.

Nicklas and I considered several ways to display the sound and finally build our own DLS bank with samples from digitally synthesized lo-fi sounds and also some old hardware sound modules. We wanted to keep them sounding a bit like chiptunes.

Then another part of the job consisting in making the sounds and the enveloppes fit with the tracks, and reorganizing the soundfont. I’m currently editing the midi files again to fix a lot of details inside the songs, making sure everything is set right, trying to improve what is lacking from Pixel’s versions, and also making some other stuff he asked for.

Oh by the way, we’re also building the speech synthesizer that will sing lyrics over each song while the playing the game!

Atari 2600 Version of LIT?

For those of you out there who are old enough to be familiar with the beloved Atari 2600 console, here's an interesting little article for you.

It seems that one of the developers from Wayforward believes that any game design worth its weight in gold should be able to be executed on the old Atari 2600 game console. He even goes so far as to work up some screenshots of what the game might look like as well as a step-by-step description of how the game would play using the old single-button Atari joystick.

It's an interesting article and will definitely be worth a look for those who can appreciate how the game might have been on the classic Atari 2600 VCS.

Onslaught completes its run up the Top 20 and lands in the top spot this week knocking out previous Top 20 powerhouse Tetris Party. As you can see, My Aquarium is still holding off World of Goo which is holding steady in the #4 spot for the time being.

The big climber this week was Tiki Towers, which jumped up 3 spots to #16 and is currently enjoying a bit of a resurgence. The big dropper this week was Hudson's Snowboard Riot, which fell 3 spots to #19.

Wayforward's LIT release didn't stick around on the chart too long, as it dropped off this week allowing Bomberman Blast to make a return appearance on the Top 20.

Rock N' Roll Climber Coming To WiiWare

medium.jpg

Vitei, the developer behind such games as 1080 Snowboarding and Doshin the Giant, are currently working on a new WiiWare title called Rock N' Roll Climber. Giles Goddard, who was a developer on Nintendo's mega-hit Nintendo 64 title Super Mario 64, is involved in the development of the title.

Not much is currently known about the game other than the brief description from the ESRB website below.

This is a rock climbing game in which players must climb up various formations within a time limit. Players navigate rocks and walls by grabbing onto divots and edges and positioning themselves to ensure they do not fall off.

It's also rumored that the game will make use of the Wii Balance Board, although nothing has been "officially" confirmed as of yet.

We'll have more information on Rock N' Roll Climber as it becomes available, as well as a full review when the game hits the WiiWare service.

Bit.Trip.Beat Coming To WiiWare On Monday

medium.jpg

Are you ready to get your funk on? You'd better be, because Aksys Game's Bit.Trip.Beat is coming to the North American WiiWare service on Monday, March 16th.

Much like Pong, you still move your paddle around by tilting the Wii Remote, but in this unique WiiWare title you'll have to bounce the blocks off your paddle in rhythm with the pumping musical beats the game makes use of. The sound of the blocks bouncing off of your paddle will even give off musical notes that will blend in with the background music if you time it correctly.

The patterns of the blocks gets increasingly difficult throughout the game, especially during the game's boss battles, so you'll have your work cut out for you if you expect to play through the entire game.

Bit.Trip.Beat is where old school Pong meets modern day rhythm action. While the game was due to hit the WiiWare service in February, we've just received word from CommanderVideo that the game will make its WiiWare debut this coming Monday.

EU WiiWare Update: Family Table Tennis and Jungle Speed

medium.jpg

It's another catch-up week for Europe, with one game the US has had forever and a game they got about two months ago.

Family Table Tennis came out two weeks after WiiWare's launch in the US, so they've almost had it for an entire year! It's the true first game in the "Family" series, but like the rest it's not really spectacular in any way - We thought it was very average when we reviewed it. The European version of the game is even less appealing however, for some ungodly reason the game now costs 800 Wii Points instead of 500!

Jungle Speed is a card game which can be played with up to 8 people. It requires fast reaction speed and quick thinking. When it was first announced we honestly didn't have too much hope for it - But when it was released in the US it actually proved rather fun, and is definitely worth the 1000 Wii Points if you've got friends to play with.

Space Battleship Yamato Creator Makes Manga For WiiWare, Someone Translates It

image-thumb103.png

Sunsoft is pressing forward with their WiiWare manga plans with a newly created series by Leiji Matsumoto. His previous works include Space Battleship Yamato and Galaxy Express 999. Like those Out of Galaxy: Gin no Koshika takes place in deep space. You, the woman with blonde hair, and Hajime start their quest to save the galaxy on September 9, 2099. Japanese Wii owners can read the first chapter on April 14 when distribution begins on the Wii Shopping Channel.

The manga viewing software and first episode will cost 500 Wii Points ($5). Future chapters can be purchased for 200 Wii Points ($2) a piece. Sunsoft has not outlined how many chapters of Out of Galaxy will be produced.

Surprisingly, Out of Galaxy: Gin no Koshika will have English subtitles even though it has only been announced for Japan. Sunsoft’s previous WiiWare manga Princess Ai also had English subtitles, but those were based off Tokyopop’s existing localization. Since Out of Galaxy will make its debut on WiiWare this translation is brand new. It’s hard to imagine the localization paying for itself if Sunsoft only releases Out of Galaxy in Japan so… should we expect an international release?

WiiWare to Support Flash Soon

medium.jpg

The Official Cave Story Blog has revealed that soon WiiWare developers will be able to code games using Flash, which opens up a world of exciting (and possibly not so exciting) gaming experiences for Wii owners.

Games like Defend Your Castle originally started life as free PC-based Flash titles, and recent Xbox Live Arcade hits such as Castle Crashers also owe a massive debt to the programming format, which tends to encourage titles that offer instant playability and addictive challenges.

However, for every decent Flash game there are about 10 less desirable ones, so hopefully this won’t signal a drop in quality on WiiWare.

More DSiWare? Hudson to the Rescue!

Or maybe not. At least, not yet... Sudoku Beginner 50 and Sudoku 150 are upcoming Sudoku downloads for the DSi, courtesy of our good friends at Hudson.

Now we here at WiiWare World can't read Japanese (our lifelong shame!) and there's only so much we're able to glean about this game. But since the "Beginner 50" version is selling for 200 Nintendo points and the "150" version for 500 Nintendo points, it's pretty safe to say that the difference between them will be difficulty and number of puzzles. Both will be available for download in Japan on March 18.

This is certainly great news for those who love all things Sudoku, but we are of two minds about this: the sad news is that Hudson's DSiWare debut is probably going to be a simple collection of Sudoku puzzles. But the good news is that Hudson is dipping its toe into the service early, and we don't doubt that we'll get some truly unique releases from them down the line.

Luc Bernard Is Back With New Studio, Oyaji Games

medium.jpg

It’s been a long while since we’ve had anything to report on our friend Luc Bernard, there was a time when every other day we faithfully posted something about his antics, despite the fact the infamous Eternity’s Child is still yet to appear on WiiWare (of course this is Alten8’s problem now!).

After a drunken hissy fit following bad reviews of the Steam version of Eternity’s Child on Destructoid, Luc declared himself finished with the videogames industry and jetted off to sunny Florida, perhaps to work on his tan?

His love of videogames and all things artistic couldn’t be contained for long however, Luc has now revealed to us that he has founded a new company called Oyaji Games whose mission is "to deliver to its users, fantasy and escape beyond the realms of reality. Breaking the bounds of the norm with every gaming experience". At the moment we can expect to see only games for iPhone and the PC, but Luc has assured us that he is in the process of applying for a license from Nintendo to develop for both the WiiWare and DSiWare services.

Watch this space, it might not be long until we see a port of his iPhone extravaganza Mecho Wars on WiiWare or DSiWare.
