ColorZ - New WiiWare Puzzler

medium.jpg

We recently came across ESRB and USK ratings for a new WiiWare game simply entitled Colorz by French developers Exkee so we contacted them to find out a little more about their game.

Aside from the screenshot below, here’s what they had to tell us:

ColorZ is an original Action/Puzzle that brings a totally new experience of gameplay thanks to Wii Capacities.

The game takes place in an alternative world full of round and colorful elements but a terrible event disturbed all the citizen; a new virus polluted the universe and created thousands of Microbes. You must drive your UFO friends in order to clean all the different planets.

The core concept is based on common light color addition and yet to be seen multiple entities management.

colorz.jpg

The screenshot above illustrates the solo mode in the game. You control two UFOs (red & green), one with Wii Remote’s pointer and the other one using the Nunchuk. The red UFO can eat red microbes and the green UFO can eat green Microbes. Be careful not to mismatch the colors or you will lose a life!

Exkee told us that Colorz is in the final stages of testing, so it is likely to be released in the next few months. WiiWare isn’t exactly short of puzzlers, but this one looks like it is trying something original at least – will this be one you will keep a watchful eye on, or avoid?

Japan has it pretty rough in terms of downloadable game releases this week. Gamers have the choice between a super-niche strategy game from Koei or a Master System Sonic game. Uncharted Waters II will make an appearance on the North American Virtual Console, by the way, as Uncharted Waters: New Horizons -- it was rated by the ESRB back in November.

Akinai Games Announces NEVES Plus

large.jpg

Akinai Games, the guys behind Evasive Space, have announced their next WiiWare project! It's going to be a sequel to their DS game NEVES, in which you are presented with a number of shapes, which you have to flip and fit together in a certain way to form a picture.

Aside from new puzzles and gameplay modes there's also a major graphical overhaul - The DS game was very basic graphics-wise, but this time the game will have an Egyptian theme. Perhaps this will be Akinai's WiiWare breakthrough?

Of course Akinai also released a press release about the game, which you can read below:

Akinai Games, a publisher of digitally distributed games for next-generation platforms, today announced NEVES Plus, their latest addition to Nintendo’s WiiWare game service. NEVES Plus is a deceptively challenging puzzle game that packs over 500 tangram-style puzzles appropriate for gamers of all ages. The game will go live on WiiWare in Q2, 2009.

“NEVES Plus is a great follow-up to the original Nintendo DS version, and now we’ve introduced plenty of multiplayer modes that bring the game to the center of family entertainment,” said Nate Fitt, Marketing Manager at Akinai Games. “With an Egyptian-themed style, new puzzles, and a variety of modes, NEVES Plus promises hours of engaging and addictive gameplay.”

In NEVES Plus, players solve the 500+ different puzzles by moving, rotating, and flipping the seven simple ‘Lucky’ stone pieces into each silhouette puzzle with the Wii Remote. You can play alone, or invite your friends in on the fun since new players can join in anytime. Whether you work co-operatively or go head-to-head, NEVES Plus will charm you with its tricky silhouette puzzles.

“Puzzle games are a timeless and highly-entertaining genre for everyone,” said Ken Koyama, Director of Business Development at Akinai Games. “With NEVES Plus, our focus is to capture the simple-yet-riveting appeal of a crossword or Sudoku puzzle, and bring the fun of tangram-style puzzles to a whole new audience.”

Features:

- Five different modes you can play alone or with up to 4 people
- Test your observation skills against friends in the Party Trivia mode
- Over 500 puzzles to provide hours of play
- Easy to use controls for the Wii make it accessible and fun for the whole family

Last Flight

Workin title: Last Flight

Genre:
Horror - action, slasher

Developer:
Bloober team

Platform: WiiWare

Target group: teen

Last Flight is an action horror for Nintendo Wii console or web distribution through WiiWare service.

The game play is in real time and divided into four episodes which are going to be released every 3-4 months. Every episode starts with reviewing of what has happened in the previous one - therefore the player can start his adventure from a chosen episode.

Continuous action, changeable alliances, surprising turns of events, together with a very intuitive control system make Last Flight one of the most interesting 2009 Nintendo Wii premieres. The game is going to be presented in a cell-shading technique.

first Nintendo Wii slasher
easy to use combat system based on chains of simple gestures
huge responsiveness to player Wii Remote moves thanks to hierarchical structure of all combo-moves
combo lists constantly available on-screen during gameplay for casual players (no more need for remembering or learning them!)
4 episodes, released every 3 months
interesting plot that goes against stereotypes
black humour jokes present thorough all cut-scenes
cut-scenes stylised for short, funny and cynic comic strips
beautiful cell-shading graphics and music creating dim atmosphere

Larry Adelman is a 38-year-old American travelling to Europe to write books about cuisines of the world (he is a culinary critic). Short, chubby and bald man distinguishes himself by a sharp language and black sense of humour. At the same time, he has an optimistic attitude to life, which makes him able to stay calm and have hope in even the most difficult situation.

On the same plane, sitting next to Larry, is Anna; wearing a mourning, yet sexy dress. She is a 30-year-old beautiful Romanian girl, travelling to her country to bury her father (resting now in the coffin in the cargo hatch). In the opening we can see Larry chatting and joking with Anna, seemingly coming to like each other.

As a result of strong turbulences, Anna's father body falls out of the coffin. It turns out he was not quite dead - he is a vampire. This sudden event makes Jan (that is his name) awake and hungry after being asleep - unnoticed, he starts attacking the passengers of the plane. The plague of vampirism spreads quickly. The only person knowing how to deal with it is Anna, as she turns out to be a specialist in tracking vampires. The situation forces her to make Larry a quick course in this field.

The role of the player is to play Larry but often he will be able to switch between characters (as in Resident Evil 0).

The first regular level of the game takes place on a plane. At the end, regardless of the player's progress, the plane is destroyed and the action moves to the biggest passenger ship in the world. Next levels (2nd, 3rd and the last - 4th), are going to take place on a ship (respectively on 3rd, 2nd and 1st deck).

The game scenario anticipates making allies, which often turn out to be treacherous. The player will often not know who to trust, especially that one of the playable characters (Anna), is going to have doubts about her identity (thanks to the direct influence of her father, Jan).

The gameplay is going to be similar to slashers (e.g. Devil May Cry series), but many elements taking advantage of Wii Remote, will bring features of old school point&click adventure games.

Lashing with a special blessed whip will freeze a vampire for about three seconds (this however depends on the level of transformation of a given individual). On stopping the vampire, one needs to drive a hewn stake through his heart. The player can only have four stakes with him - should he need more, he needs to prepare them by himself.

The vampirism is based on a virus manner of infecting - different influence on various individuals, various levels of transformation - different symptoms and different strength of vampire attributes. The action is going to be very fast and the use of pre-defined views will allow for a large number of film effects.

last_flight_2.gif

last_flight_3.gif

Also, there are very characteristic people on the plane - heavy-metal band, Japanese fans, Russian businessmen - thanks to them, allies or opponents are going to have their significant character, instead of being jus mindless monsters

For the time being, only single player is planned. On completing all four episodes, apart from adventure mode, there is going to be a bonus of being able to complete the last level with a machine gun shooting stakes instead of bullets.

The graphics is going to be presented in cell-shading; this way, the presentation of slaughter on the screen will be a little bit similar to Japanese anime.

Korner Entertainment Announces Math Blazer For WiiWare

medium.jpg

We've got yet another publisher tossing their hat into the WiiWare ring this week with the announcement by Korner Entertainment that they'll now be publishing titles for Nintendo's WiiWare service starting with their board game hit Math Blazer.

Below is a copy of their official press release that was sent out to the media this afternoon.

Korner Entertainment S.L. announces its launch as a video game production company in Spain. The company has born as spin off from the spanish production company, Gammick Entertainment, SL.

The new production company is based in the heart of Barcelona and is headed up by Sergio Rincón, who has more than sixteen years in the industry as a former Managing Director for Planeta DeAgostini Interactive, On Games and Gammick Entertainment. Hudson Entertainment Announce Three New WiiWare Titles

medium.jpg

udson Entertainment USA have been busy, it seems. There are now three more WiiWare titles to look out for!

By far the biggest announcement is a new installment in the Military Madness series (Also known as Nectaris). As you might know, the games are quite a bit like Nintendo's "Wars" series, with turn-based combat involving military units. This new version of the game will not only feature new missions and units, but also online co-op and versus modes! The game's not just being released on WiiWare - Xbox 360 and PS3 users will be able to get it too.

We now also know what the mysterious Water Warfare is. This game was rated by the OFLC and USK not too long ago, but Hudson did not want to disclose any information - Until now! The game is another FPS, although this time it's not a "shooter", but a "soaker". Perhaps a response to Onslaught's lack of a versus mode, this game has you duking it out on playgrounds and beaches online, trying to hit up to 7 other kids with water from a water gun.

Hudson's last new game is a bit of a surprise as well - It's a port of the popular PC game Diner Dash. It doesn't seem to be much different from the original, featuring the same gameplay of rollerblading around the restaurant and serving customers what you want. The game will also have multiplayer, but Hudson didn't mention online, so we assume it's local only. Like Military Madness, this will be available on all three consoles.

So, which of these do you think will be released first? Place your bets now! It should be noted that nothing about a North American release of Adventure Island: The Beginning has been mentioned in today's news splurge. Perhaps North American gamers will have to wait a little while longer for this?

2D Boy's Ron Carmel Talks About Indie Game Development

medium.jpg

For those of you out there who are curious as to just what it takes to create a video game from scratch, Ron Carmel, co-creator of World of Goo, recently sat down at the Game Developers Conference and gave some specifics as to what it cost to create their hit WiiWare title.

Below are a few dollar amounts Ron gave out regarding the development of World of Goo.

- $4000 on hardware
- $1000 on software
- $5000 on QA
- $5000 for localization
- $5000 for legal fees

He also explained that while these base costs might seem manageable, there are quite a few other expenses that go into the final tally when you take day-to-day living requirements over a 2 year period into account. When that is figured in it ramps up the total cost up to a whopping $96,000. And with only about $60,000 in PC Version pre-orders, the guys at 2D Boy still had to pony up over $28,000 out of their own pockets when the game launched. Ouch!

Carmel was quick to detail that nearly 60% of their revenues came from the WiiWare version of the game and told those in attendance that these digital download services available on the current generation of game consoles are really the best route to take when it comes to indie developers wanting to get the most bang for their buck.

While there's still no word on what 2D Boy's next project will be, Carmel offered up his usual quick-witted response. "It's going to be The Sophmore Effect: An Intentionally Mediocre Game." While it will be difficult to live up to the standards set by World of Goo, we find it hard to believe that their next project will be anything short of amazing.

XSEED unleashing Drill Sergeant MindStrong on WiiWare

xseed0325.jpg

The ESRB ratings database has revealed the first WiiWare game from publisher XSEED: Drill Sergeant Mindstrong, which is, uh, a brain-training minigame collection. A weird one.

The description of the game mentions minigames "in which players train and compete in math, rhythm, and reflex/timing drills guided by a trainer named Sergeant Mindstrong." The whole thing has a military theme, including a saluting minigame and one about marching in time. All the minigames will have "Hell" at the beginning of the title, like "Hell Roll Call."

Siliconera speculates, because of the XSEED/Marvelous connection, that this is Discipline, the WiiWare game announced last year. The title fits, as well. However, Discipline is a sort of adventure about escaping from prison, and this is military brain training.

Curve officially announces Explodemon

large.jpg

Independent developer Curve Studios today announced Explodemon!, the developer’s first self-published original title for digital download.

Explodemon! is a 2.5D platform action game influenced by classic Japanese games from the golden era of the SNES. The game is based around Explodemon, an exploding hero that uses his explosive ability to combat enemies, propel himself through the air, destroy anything in his path and solve puzzles using the game’s solid physics system. Explodemon! is packaged up as a loving parody of badly translated action games and everything that they embody.

The game came into being after Curve’s Design Director, Jonathan Biddle, decided to try making his own games. “I’d been a games designer for many years, but had always wanted the ability to prototype ideas myself. I decided to learn Game Maker and started making a platform game about an exploding man. After a working silently away for a few months in my spare time, I let a few people at Curve play Explodemon! and it became obvious that I’d managed to create something very fun.”

Jason Perkins, Managing Director of Curve, is enthusiastic about the title. “Due to the prototype, we’ve been in the fortunate position of having been able to play Explodemon! for a long time now. The gameplay has been honed through iterative playtesting so many times, that we are effectively now releasing Explodemon II. We’re excited to now be able to marry this solid gameplay with cutting edge 3D visuals and effects and release it via digital distribution for others to enjoy.”

Biddle continues, “Explodemon! is best described as what Treasure would create if they mixed Yoshi’s Island with Half Life 2. It includes many elements from games as diverse as Street Fighter II, Halo, Super Metroid and Bangai-O. As lifelong gamers, we’re huge fans of these titles and feel we’ve managed to bring together something that captures something from all of them. We think that there are many gamers out there like us who feel that there aren’t enough absolutely amazing action platform games on the current download services and we really can’t wait for people to see that we’ve managed to create exactly that with Explodemon!”

Explodemon! is planned for release in Q4 2009 on the PlayStation®3 via the PlayStation®Network. Subsequent versions will be released on the PC through various online portals, and for the Wii on Nintendo’s WiiWare service. Visit www.explodemon.com for a trailer of the game.

Featuring jobs and locations from the popular FINAL FANTASY TACTICS® series, CRYSTAL DEFENDERS requires players to strategically deploy units to fend off encroaching enemy hordes and prevent them from stealing their party’s crystals.

The WiiWare version includes several improvements to the interface and a new design optimized for consoles. A worldwide ranking system allows players to upload their scores to leaderboards and see how they stack up against other players around the globe. These and other new features are sure to increase excitement and enhance replayability.

John Yamamoto, president and chief executive officer of Square Enix Ltd. comments, “The release of these two CRYSTAL DEFENDERS titles on WiiWare demonstrates Square Enix’s commitment to providing new downloadable content, meeting the needs of its customers. CRYSTAL DEFENDERS combines easy pick-up and play mechanics, great depth and an addictive quality that make it ideal for the platform. I hope that many people experience and enjoy it.”

About CRYSTAL DEFENDERS R1

Story
In a land ruled by might and magick, peace is ensured by the benevolent power of the crystals. When a young moogle charged with guarding these crystals learns of an evil presence gathering on the horizon, he calls upon heroes from the far corners of the realm to join forces and stand against this new threat.

Wielders of blade and bow, keepers of arts arcane, unite! As darkness draws nigh, only you can protect the light that binds us. The fate of Ivalice lies in the hands of…the Crystal Defenders!

Features
CRYSTAL DEFENDERS R1 is a defensive simulation game in which players deploy characters from the FINAL FANTASY TACTICS® series onto a variety of different maps to battle wave after wave of encroaching monsters. The first game in the series, Crystal Guardians, was released in Japan for mobile phones in January 2008. In December of the same year, iPhone 3G, iPod touch and iPod versions were released under the new name, CRYSTAL DEFENDERS. To date, the total number of downloads for the series have reached over 800,000.

CRYSTAL DEFENDERS R1 is simple and easy to learn – monsters will enter an area and march through it until they are defeated or reach an exit, at which time they will steal one or more crystals. It is up to the player to decide – by pausing the action at crucial moments – when and where to deploy various jobs such as Black Mages or Soldiers that will attempt to defend the party’s crystals. Factors such as map terrain, monster strengths and weaknesses, job attributes, and more will play a crucial role in determining what steps a player should take.

Magnetis - New Magnetising Puzzler for WiiWare

medium.jpg

Magnetis, you scratch your head, what is this wonderful sounding game? Well folks it’s another puzzler for WiiWare, but this time with a magnetic twist. The game is being developed by a Parisian studio by the name of Yullaby who contacted us recently to spread the word about their upcoming game.

The goal of the game is to connect magnets facing opposite directions together. When you do, they contract and everything in between disappears. You get more point for longer lines, and even more points for chained reactions, so you're encouraged to plan your moves ahead. Up to 4 players can play in split screen. There are many game modes, like Normal, Time Attack, Block Attack, Battle, Cooperative, and players can even team up (for instance, if you have buddy who's really strong, you can play at 3 against 1). It might not seem like so at first, but there can be quite a bit of strategy involved in planning ahead for your combos.

large.jpg

The developers have told Nintendo Life that the overall feel of the game is more arcade or "good old Mega Drive" days than the more casual puzzles out there, although we know that the game is nonetheless easily accessible to everyone, even the ladies!

So who are Yullaby you ask? They’re a small studio mostly comprised of experienced developers (some up to 12 years), who banded together at the end of 2006 to try and make their own games. They have a pronounced taste for games with a good arcade feel to them. Of course, like all young studios, they had (and still have) to develop commission projects in order to get by. WiiWare brought them the opportunity to try and get something of their own out there, so they had to think of a small scale project in order to see what they could do with the Wii. A puzzle game seemed to be the right choice, but much cooler things are also in the works right now! As many other studios, they hope to become fully independent one day, and only make a living by making cool arcade/action games.

Magnetis should be released somewhere in the second quarter of 2009, if the powers that be at the Big N are agreeable. You can of course expect a full review at that time from Nintendo Life: WiiWare at that time.
