Software by Platform Breakdown:
Wii Software Wii had robust representation in the preliminary data for this week. A total of six titles were in the preliminary top twenty, and all the charting titles except Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games saw significant boosts from last week. The incredible boost in software sales for many of these older titles, in what was expected to be a generally down week, suggests that Nintendo has allocated a far heavier than normal supply of Wiis to Japan. Some early data from the Americas confirms that Wii sales have dropped significantly in the West during this same timeframe, meaning that given the software sales, it is likely that Wii hardware will be within 15% of 400,000 units and well above DS hardware (see below).
Wii Fit (Wii) 255,000
Wii Sports (Wii) 160,000
Super Mario Galaxy (Wii) 153,000
Wii Play (Wii) 130,000
Mario Party 8 (Wii) 75,000
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (Wii) 73,000
PS3 Software Despite the proximity to the peak weeks in Japanese sales, PS3 only had one title appear this week in the preliminary top twenty. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare saw sales of approximately 25,000 on PS3, and likely saw sales just below that threshold on the Xbox 360 (the game did not show up in the preliminary data on Xbox 360). With next weeks general rise in sales of older titles, expect PS3 to have a greater representation of software sales. However, with the dearth of software sales this week, expect hardware sales to remain at 55,000 to 65,000.
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (PS3) 25,000
Xbox 360 Software No titles appeared in the preliminary top twenty. Xbox 360 hardware should remain at 8,000 to 12,000 units this week.
PS2 Software With five titles (one of these titles is a limited edition of another game) in the preliminary top twenty, PS2 software was nearly as represented as Wii software this week, despite the rapid approach of the 8th anniversary of the PS2 Japanese launch. In contrast to Wii software though, PS2 software sales were more subdued, with only a new edition of Super Robot Wars breaking 100,000 units. Still, holiday trends are in full effect, as catalogue titles like Winning Eleven 2008, and Yakuza 2: The Best (a cheaper version) return to the charts. On the strength of Super Robot Wars, PS2 hardware should be between 20,000 and 35,000 units this week.
Super Robot Wars OG Sidestory (PS2) (main) 189,000
Winning Eleven 2008 (PS2) 39,000
Super Robot Wars OG Sidestory (PS2) (limited) 24,000
Yakuza 2 the best (PS2) 20,000
Sengoku Basara Heroes 2 (PS2) 18,000
PSP Software PSP had two notable releases this week. The first is Star Ocean 1 which debuted at well over 100,000 units. Another new debut, Suzumiya Haruhi no Yakusoku likely debuted over 100,000 as well when the main and limited edition are counted as one. PSP hardware sales, already tremendous last week, appear to have crossed the 200,000 barrier, and were likely at 200,000 to 240,000 units this week.
Star Ocean 1: First Departure (PSP) 134,000
Suzumiya Haruhi no Yakusoku (PSP) (limited) 95,000
Monster Hunter Portable 2 (PSP) 50,000
Suzumiya Haruhi no Yakusoku (PSP) (main) 36,000
DS Software Compared to last week, when DS had two titles sell near 300,000 units, software is down significantly from last week. Only one DS title, Mario Party DS, sold over 100,000 units this week. In essence the DS titles to chart this week were recent releases (like Final Fantasy IV), or titles with long legs (Layton, Mario Party, Dragon Quest). The disappearance of six DS titles from last week is indicative of declining hardware sales for DS, although the resurgence of older titles will likely benefit DS and PS2 hardware (by percentage of sales increase) most next week. As for this week, expect DS hardware sales to be comparable to PSP sales at around 220,000 to 260,000 units
Mario Party (DS) 133,000
Dragon Quest IV (DS) 81,000
Professor Layton & Pandoras Box (DS) 64,000
Final Fantasy IV (DS) 44,000
