Preliminary Japanese Sales for the Week Ending December 16, 2007
When compiling weekly data for Japan, ioi uses a bevy of sources. By Sunday Night (East Coast USA time), both first day data and preliminary weekly data is available for analysis. Taking both into account, here is an early take on how some of the figures will look this week. These figures are not to be taken as gospel, just an early take on approximately where the market will be for the week.
Looking at the data this week, it is clear that the full holiday boosts are in effect, as a greater number of older games are returning to prominent positions in the data each week. The clearest illustration of this phenomenon is the return of both Wii Sports and Wii Play to the preliminary top twenty after having not appeared since late August (in the final data both games were still selling thousands per week), selling over 40,000 units. User base factors are in full effect as well this week, as Xbox 360 titles were squeezed out of the preliminary top twenty by software titles on more popular Japanese systems. Among the top twenty games, there eight DS titles, five Wii titles, four PS2 titles, two PSP titles, and one PS3 title. As always, a platform by platform breakdown of sales can be found below.
Wii Software The top selling Wii title for this was week was Wii Fit which sold an additional 80,000 to 100,000 units. Super Mario Galaxy is one of the above mentioned games that sold far more this week than the previous week in the prelim data 60,000 to 70,000 units this week about 1.5x previous week sales. Square-Enixs new title, Chocobos Mysterious Dungeon sold 54,000 to 61,000 units in its debut. Wii Play sold 48,000 to 58,000 units this week, while Wii Sports sold 40,000 to 48,000 units this week. A look back through the old preliminary data shows Wii has had not had five titles in the top twenty since the first week of August. Expect Wii hardware to be in the 110,000 to 135,000 range this week.
PS3 Software The retailer version of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue debuted to sales of 85,000 to 93,000 units and was the only PS3 title to chart in the preliminary top twenty this week. Expect PS3 hardware to sell 34,000 to 54,000 units this week.
Xbox 360 Software No Xbox 360 titles were in the preliminary top twenty this week. Expect Xbox 360 hardware to sell 7,000 to 12,000 units this week.
PS2 Software Winning Eleven 2008 was the top selling PS2 title this week selling an additional 38,000 to 45,000 units. In second place, was SD Gundam G Generation Spirits which sold 22,000 to 28,000 units. Third was Sengoku Basara Heroes 2 which sold 16,000 to 20,000 units. Lastly, a special edition of Yakuza 2 sold 13,000 to 17,000 units. PS2 hardware should remain in the 12,000 to 18,000 range.
PSP Software Everybodys Golf Portable 2 was the top selling PSP title this week moving 32,000 to 38,000 units. The other title, Monster Hunter Portable 2, sold 18,000 to 22,000 units. PSP hardware should remain in the 82,000 to 92,000 unit range for the week.
DS Software Mario Party DS was the top selling title for the week moving 155,000 to 180,000 units. Dragon Quest IX appears to have sold 67,000 to 74,000 units this week, although this may be an extra large shipment to compensate for the previous week (when DQIX was not in the preliminary top twenty, despite selling 63k by MC). Professor Layton and Pandoras Box sold 65,000 to 71,000 units this week. Powerpro-kun Pocket 10 sold an additional 37,000 to 45,000 units. The re-mastered version of DS Drum Master sold another 32,000 to 37,000 units this week. Gintama Quest sold through 24,000 to 29,000 units this week. Dinosaur King returned to the prelim data this week, selling 21,000 to 25,000 units. Lastly, Nep League DS sold 19,000 to 23,000 units. Expect DS hardware to remain between 150,000 and 200,000 units this week.
