Starting with the Americas - the Sports Champions bundle sold around 50,000 units last week, each one counting as a new piece of Move hardware. Of this, around 10,000 units were bundled with PS3 hardware. Now the tricky bit, as well as the Sports Champion bundle, around 35,000 Move Controllers were also sold. Of these, we estimate that around 25% are for consumers who already own a PlayStation Eye Camera and the remainder are as a second controller. Therefore in total, around 60,000 units of Move hardware were sold in the Americas last week.

Moving on to Europe and there is no Sports Champions bundle as in the Americas, but there is a Starter Pack which includes the Camera and Move Controller. Around 70,000 Starter Packs were sold last week in Europe along with a further 30,000 Move Controllers. Assuming a similar 25% of Move Controller purchases are for users with an existing camera, around 80,000 units of Move hardware were sold last week in Europe taking the worldwide total to around 140,000 units as of September 18th with around 100,000 copies of Sports Champions also in homes across the world
.

Kinect pre-orders boom

Microsoft vindicated as innovative controller finds its feet, quashing initial fears over high £129.99 RRP

Despite initial scepticism over its price, Kinect looks set to be a big hit.

Retailers are reporting high pre-order numbers for the device, which will be available in November for £129.99 bundled with Kinect Adventures.

In fact MCV understands one large chain has encouraged stores to secure 10 pre-orders for Kinect a day. Sources says they expect advance orders to topple half a million in the UK by launch.
It’s a U-turn for retail. Key voices previously declared sub-£100 as the only way to capture Kinect’s target market (MCV 593, 25/06/10). Now these firms are hailing the high price tag as “reflective of the product’s playability and appeal to a wide range of customers”.

Grainger Games’ sales director Phil Moore told MCV: “The feedback we’ve had so far from our customers is that they feel the price is appropriate to the product.

We have taken a large number of deposits for Kinect already and it is set to become our biggest pre-order to date. This tells us the device’s appeal has not been affected by the price point.”

The Hut Group’s head of business development Sarah Jasper agreed: “Based on our orders thus far, customers are clearly excited by this offering and price – and quite rightly so.”

Retailers are also confident any remaining cynics will be won over, provided Microsoft is able to showcase the experience of playing Kinect effectively.

GAME Group’s UK MD Martyn Gibbs told MCV: “Kinect is a fantastic piece of technology and we believe that once people actually try it for themselves, they will understand the full scope and value of what it offers them.”

Kinect to sell four million this Xmas

Lazard Capital Market analyst Colin Sebastian says claimed Kinect could sell over four million units this year.

The analysts believe by focusing on the “better value” $299 bundle of the motion controller plus an Xbox 360 rather than the $129 standalone unit, Microsoft will do a lot better than first thought.

“Our checks indicate that the Kinect build is on a pace of around 2 million units per month… suggesting to us potentially more aggressive launch plans for the device,” he said in a note to investors. “As such, we are increasing our Kinect unit sales expectations for [the Christmas quarter] to 4 million worldwide, up from 3 million units previously.”

Sebastian continued saying Microsoft’s strategy in both marketing and advertising will ensure a succesful launch. “We believe that Microsoft is preparing a significant marketing and advertising campaign for Kinect, coinciding with the device launch,” he said.

“Games using the Kinect sensor will initially include fitness, dance, sports and kart racing, suggesting that Microsoft is targeting a casual (Wii) audience.”

But what of the price? many people believe the stand alone unit is far too expensive, something which Sebastian seems to agree with, “we believe the better value is the Xbox 360 bundle for $299.

We continue to believe that $99 would be a ‘sweet spot’ for Kinect, and production quantities suggest that Microsoft may be leaving open the possibility for price promotions on Kinect next year,

“Over time, we also anticipate that motion sensors will show up in connected TVs, living room PCs, set-top boxes and other consumer devices.”

Kinect is set to launch this November.

We have already been hands on (or hands free) with the device and you can read our thoughts here.

US Zahlen sind da:
