Manga Manga in Perfektion: One Piece

Ich hätt's ehrlichgesagt gut gefunden, wenn es dieses Jahr Attack on Titan geschafft hätte. Ist halt langweilig jedes Jahr dasselbe :sorry: Aber nicht, weil ich es besser finde.

One Piece Ranks 2nd in ‘Book of the Year Ranking 2014′

According to Yahoo News, the Japanese magazine Da Vinci will be announcing in its newest issue on sale Dec. 6, the results to their “Book of the Year 2014″ ranking.

The ranking is looking for “that book that made your heart race” — but it only takes into account books published in the one year period between Oct. 1, 2013 to Sept. 30, 2014 and does not look at the overall sales numbers like Oricon’s rankings do. Instead, it looks at the books read most by those actively involved in the industry — professional writers, bookstore employees, critics via an all-year round frequent survey. This year, the results were taken from a sample of 4,589 people with One Piece ending on second place.

The top 5 is as follows:

1. Attack on Titan (Vol. 1-14) by Hajime Isayama/Kōdansha
2. One Piece (Vol. 1-75) by Eiichirō Oda/Shūeisha
3. Silver Spoon (Vol. 1-12) by Hiromu Arakawa/Shōgakukan
4. Haikyū (Vol. 1-13) by Haruichi Furudate/Shūeisha
5. Hōzuki no Reitetsu (Vol. 1-16) by Natsumi Eguchi/Kōdansha

Da Vinci‘s January issue will be on sale on December 6 and include rankings for all categories (including Non-Fiction books, novels etc.) and the “Top 3 Books to Pick Up” as voted by the survey respondents and their “Favorite Publishing Company of the Year” and more. Attack on Titan was also last year’s Nr. 1 in Da Vinci‘s ranking
Yahoo News notes that this year, Attack on Titan has published 40 million print copies, spawned an anime movie, anime and multiple other collaborations and that this perhaps is the reason why it caught the book world’s attention so much this year.

One-Piece.com Addresses Oda’s One-Week Absence

The official One Piece website has come out with a post to explain the absence of One Piece in next week’s issue of Weekly Shônen Jump.

According to the website, One Piece will be absent from Weekly Shônen Jump Issue #2, officially on sale Monday, December 8th because the author Eiichirô Oda is conducting research and/or collecting information. The post also mentions that due to an oversight, chapter 769 didn’t include an announcement of next week’s break and the magazine apologizes to its readers for any possible trouble and/or concern this unannounced break might have caused.

As we previously mentioned, due to the changes in the manga schedule, this week on The One Piece Podcast, we have Greg on with us to go through what he’s been up to this year and what he has planned! We also go through a retrospective of his meteoric rise in Japan. Check that episode out on December 8th! If you haven’t already, make sure to watch The One Piece Podcast Goes to Japan to see more about Greg’s success.

The season finale of our podcast will be on December 15th to coincide with the release of One Piece, Chapter 770. We will also have special guests Joel McDonald and Ian Sinclair on the show and Bryan Newton from Rick and Morty is scheduled to return on the show! Hope to see you then!

‘One Piece’ Spinoff series ‘One Piece Party’ – Overview

So today I got my hands on the January Issue of the Japanese magazine Saikyô Jump, the little brother of Shûeisha’s Weekly Shônen Jump, featuring the now already infamous new One Piece spinoff series, One Piece Party. At the end of this post I will be adding a short overview of the entire story (with spoilers and pictures), so if you’re just interested in reading the series for yourself, be sure to stop reading when you see the line dividing this post.

The new One Piece spinoff One Piece Party is a series written by manga artist Ei Andô. The man is the author of previous series such as Majin no Gald, but apart from that, not much more is known about him. The series is aimed towards grade schoolers (the main target demographic of Saikyô Jump) and is thus filled mostly with gags. This is likely a good indicator of what to expect in future chapters, as gags were also a huge part of the previous One Piece spinoff. In contrast with that spinoff, however, One Piece Party actually uses existing gags/references from Oda’s One Piece world.

The story is set in the post-timeskip time period of the One Piece story. Characters have their post-timeskip outfits and powers, but the world is not built as logically as the original One Piece world. We’ve seen a large amount of characters in the original One Piece series, but due to the epic nature of the story, it’s not always possible to revisit everyone. In One Piece Party, however, it seems like any One Piece character can, and will, appear out of thin air at the drop of a hat in order to service a gag. It’s definitely not a series One Piece theorists would like due to its “filler-esque” nature, but if you’re willing to look beyond the simplistic nature (remember, it’s made for grade schoolers, not adults), this is definitely a fun little addition to the main series..

On the whole, the art is pretty well done and is faithful enough to the original series while adding enough of its own style to stand out. Looking at it, one can essentially classify it as One Piece with chibi-fication. Despite not being drawn by Oda, there is a surprising number of in-jokes and details present in the art (it even features Pandaman). Not too bad for a spinoff.

In the end, if you’re looking for a gag series set in the One Piece world that very little logic behind it , this is the series for you. However, if you’re looking for a series that further your theory of Crocodile being Luffy’s mom or whatever it is kids theorize about these days, this isn’t the droid you’re looking for. But let’s be real; any hardcore theorist likely stopped reading about this series the second we mentioned Oda’s general non-involvement with it.

December 22, 2014 – WSJ Issue #4/5 – One Piece Chapter 771 (with a color spread)
January 5, 2015 – WSJ Issue #6/7*
January 19, 2015 – WSJ Issue #8*

*There has not been any confirmation as of yet that One Piece will appear in this issue of Weekly Shonen Jump. This does not mean there will not be a new chapter, but there has been no confirmation at this time.
