http://www.gofanboy.com/features/fa...he-xbox-360-the-most-innovative-console-ever/Some gamers may be writing off the new motion controller from Microsoft before it even releases, but unless you’ve been living under a rock the last couple weeks, you know that casual gamers are being targeted heavily by Microsoft. Daytime programming like Ellen Degeneres and even the CBS evening news are all covering the new “controller-free” controller. It looks like Kinect will do better than anyone anticipated. That is partially to do with the skewed view of that small segment of gamers who call themselves “hardcore”. They scour the interwebs daily for the latest new on their favorite consoles, but often forget that it’s the casual consumer, who sees advertisements on TV or billboards, that makes up the majority of videogame purchases.
Kinect aims to take everything that’s was considered innovative this generation, tweak it, throw it out the window and introduce something that on the surface is similar, but in reality is completely new. Those closed-minded gamers who believe in only supporting one console like to point out that consoles have had cameras before. While that is true, it’s also a shame that anyone would ignore everything that Kinect brings to the table. The multiple microphones embedded in the hardware work alongside the infrared components to do so much more than just put a gamer’s picture on the screen.
Unlike the Nintendo Wii, we won’t see any horrific pictures online after the Kinect’s launch showing broken flat screens smashed up by controllers. We all remember those slippery Wiimotes flying across the room when one of your idiot friends got too excited and let their sweaty palms lose their grip. Then on the other hand, we have differences from the PS3’s Move. Sony’s entry into the motion-controller rush for consumer’s dollars and attention requires that gamers purchase additional controllers for each participant. Move is a great deal if you have no friends and like to only play with yourself. (Yes I know what I said there). From a casual consumer’s point-of-view, the new Kinect is already a bargain because you only have to buy one add-on. Even the Nintendo Wii requires people to purchase additional high-priced controllers (and then nunchucks too) for each additional gamer.
Is pricing the only difference? No. The innovation of a controller-free experience allowing anyone to “walk-in” to a game and require no additional controllers isn’t the only thing that makes Kinect special. After calibrating the hardware, your machine knows you. Those old enough to remember the Sega Dreamcast and its initial launch campaign will recall the slogan –“It’s Thinking!”. While the Dreamcast did have some great AI and internal memory for the time, Kinect truly is thinking the moment you walk into view.
Is it too soon to say Kinect will change everything about gaming? Of course it is. Is it too soon to call the add-on the most innovative piece of gaming hardware this generation? We don’t think so. The vocal recognition software gives us the interactive experience we’ve wanted since we saw old Marty McFly command his TV in Back to the Future 2. Now if the Xbox 360 gets a hoverboard, we will officially call it the greatest console ever. Until then, we’ll just say it’s innovative and impressive.
