PSW screwed Sony! PSW screwed YOU!

Let it be clear that PSW couldn?t handle any negative critics anymore and decided at their own risk to publish some footage for which they had no permission from Sony Computer Entertainment. Well, let?s take a look at the details first!

We?ve waited for a long, long time for the first Killzone footage, and now, just a few weeks ago, PSW UK based magazine was the first who was to satisfy our hunger. The hype was growing again and within a few days there were mirrors everywhere! But it was only a matter of time before the first negative reactions were going to emerge. Instead of the low quality footage we published months before, there were serious bugs in this footage. A lot of people saw that this footage wasn?t meant for public of the first viewing, but some people reacted very hard and directed Killzone to the recycle bin immediately. That?s really stupid of course, but this time it was very clear. This footage was put on the PSW disc illegally. We?ll describe all arguments and give you a better overview about the things that happened.

Sadly, SCEE or Guerrilla didn?t want to give an official reaction about this incident. However, our contacts within Guerrilla were able to give us more information about this event that happened. So it seems that not only PSW is guilty, it was also very stupid of SCEE. They are responsible for the publishing and distribution of builds from Killzone to others.

It is also certain that the PSW made the footage in-house. The first question we are asking then is what kind of people are working at PSW, because it seems that the poor man had never touched a controller in his life before. And he didn?t seem to realize that all tactical elements in Killzone are taking out or basically non-existent when playing in GOD mode. Sad. Very sad. The only thing what PSW did very well was the article that they had written. Click here to read it, at our forum. (With thanks to Carling).

So the build from which PSW made the footage was also a couple of months old. And never meant for public. And of course be aware that it takes over a month before that Disc was available in stores.

The most negative sides of the footage was the A.I., we can?t say that it was good, because everybody could say that there were some points which could be a lot better. But what is a fact is that the version we played previous year had a very good A.I. Way better that we?ve seen in this footage. The reason? We actually don?t know. But an employee from Guerrilla was willing to give us more information about this. The builds, which are made, aren?t all the same. Every build is different from others, in that way that they are focusing at different things each build. Some builds are made for the graphics, others for the AI etc. This build wasn?t meant for public, so it could be very good that they only wanted to look at the frame rates in this build, who knows? In that case, why pay attention to the A.I.? If you want to see all things running smooth, you have to play a build, which is meant for public, this build wasn?t. And there is no way that the A.I. in Killzone is bad. The A.I. is just one of the highlights of Killzone. It?s not without a reason that the two masterminds Arjen and Remco from Guerrilla have been working over two years now on the A.I. full time!

But the most hopeless reactions were caused by the missing lip-animations of the first character in the game and some incomplete animations. As it already says: Not finished. With over 10 months left to go for development time. It is impossible to have this build and to have all animations finished. And there?s a very simple explanation for the missing lip-animation. As Guerrilla said before, a lot of the characters faces are just placeholders. The real faces will be added at a later stage. So why animate a face when it?s going to be replaced anyway?

To end this, we have a reaction from somebody over at Guerrilla.

?I can tell you that we find it very lame that a test build of a few months old got leaked. It is not representative for the game, and is very bad publicity for us. People are whining about stuff we knew were not right for months. This is extremely frustrating.

The real jerks are PSW in this case. They knew very well that they had a version of the game, which was not suited for publishing, and by desperately wanting to have the exclusive on it they even screwed Sony. It's not even an Alpha, it's probably a version of about 5 months ago!?

So better no footage than this footage? Although the footage was very cool and we could smell the atmosphere of Killzone, we think we can all say YES.

Can you smell the Spam?

Our apologies: The loading times

Posted by: TheIceMan on Thursday, March 04, 2004 - 06:22 PM

Our regular readers have probably read our report from our play-test with Killzone. We went to Guerrilla previous year to be one of the first who were allowed to check Killzone! We had a big smile on our faces the whole time; this game is and will be so good! However there were some critics from some people at Killzone after reading our report?

One of the aspects some readers were a bit frustrated about was the fact that the version we played had loading times. Of course this is ridiculous, because the game doesn?t have any loading times? However, Killzone was too hyped that this disappointed some of you. For all those disappointed fan-boys: good news! Cause Guerrilla is really trying to get rid of those loading screens. It?s not certain if they can archive this goal, however they are really trying to! And so our apologies to Guerrilla, we thought that it was impossible to get rid of those loading screens and we said that a couple of times. It?s getting better and better and we can?t wait to play another build of Killzone soon!
