Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’ Reaches $1.97 Million In Box Office Numbers

Funimation has revealed that on opening night, Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’ has made a rather stunning $1.97 Million in box office numbers. The movie also hit 1st place in “Average Per Screen” among the top ten movies shown in the U.S. as well as 6th place for overall box office growth when against other major studio releases.

I think it would be safe to assume that this movie exceeded Funimation’s expectations. Hopefully with the good news they received they’ll be more encouraged to do regular movie runs in the future instead of having limited runs.

You can check out the full statement below:

FUNimation® Entertainment announced a record breaking opening night for the theatrical release of “Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’.” The anime film, which opened last night in 894 theaters across the U.S., brought in a stunning $1.97 Million box office for FUNimation Films on opening day of the limited theatrical event. The movie’s per screen average of more than $2,198 landed it in 1st place yesterday in Average Per Screen among the Top 10 movies showing in the U.S. and 6th place in overall box office gross against all major studio releases. “Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’” is now the 8th highest anime opening of all time and the first limited event-style theatrical release to crack the Top 10.

“We are thrilled with the overwhelmingly positive fan response to the movie. We knew the opening would be very good but its performance has exceeded everyone’s expectations,” said Michael DuBoise, EVP and COO of FUNimation. “From our theatrical marketing campaign and fan engagement events to our expanded theatrical footprint and the specially produced 15-minute pre-show, FUNimation made a strategic decision to make Dragon Ball Z accessible to anime fans both old and new and it has paid off.”

Theater sell outs were reported in major metropolitan areas including New York, Los Angeles and Dallas. “Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’” opens in Canada on Thursday, August 6, and will screen in more than 1,000 theaters total during its limited theatrical engagement from August 4 – 12, 2015.

“This film is a resounding victory on all levels,” said David Wengrod, VP of Theatrical Distribution for FUNimation. “The combination of our careful choice of release dates, an enticing marketing campaign that theaters embraced and fans universally accepted, and all of the great reviews added up to a terrific opening for us.”
“Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’” is the 19th film in the Dragon Ball franchise and is the follow-up to last year’s “Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods.” The film is a limited event-style theatrical release which includes a specially-produced 15-minute, Dragon Ball Z themed pre-show to create a unique experience for fans that can only be found in theaters.

Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’ 2-Day US Total Surpasses Battle of Gods Run

Just the other day, it was announced Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’ brought in $1.97 million USD. After two days in US theaters, that number has increased to $3.5 million USD as the movie brought in an additional $1.55 million USD on Wednesday. This surpasses the total 8-day theatrical run of last year’s Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods in the US, which brought in $2.8 million USD. Take a look at the official press release below!

FUNimation® Entertainment announced another record box office for Day 2 of its limited theatrical release of the anime film “Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’.” With a slight increase to 901 theaters over opening night’s 895 theaters, FUNimation Films brought in an astounding $1.55 Million box office on Wednesday – for a total of more than $3.5 Million in two days. The movie held onto 1st place among the Top 10 with a per screen average of $1,724 – ahead of such films as “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation.” With its 2-day gross, “Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’” has far and away eclipsed the total 8-day box office ($2.8 Million) of last year’s “Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods.”

“We are ecstatic not only that our fans love Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’ but also that our theater partners have embraced it. We could not have led the U.S. box office in average per screen for the past two days and crossed $4.0 Million on Day 3 without both of them,” said Michael DuBoise, EVP and COO of FUNimation. “Together we have a chance to break into the Top 10 list of anime releases of all time – becoming the only independent film to do so. Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’ returns to wide release on Saturday and next Tuesday and with the continued support from fans and theaters, we may soon stand alongside Disney and the legendary Hayao Miyazaki and his blockbusters, Howl’s Moving Castle and The Wind Rises.”

“Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’,” which opened yesterday in Canada, performed well on its third night despite a drop in theater screens at big chains in order to make room for major studio releases. The film will continue its run in both the U.S. and Canada thru Wednesday, August 12.

“While losing theaters to make way for major studio releases, Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’ dropped a modest 6% in average per screen between Wednesday to Thursday,” said David Wengrod, VP of Theatrical Distribution for FUNimation. “Our $1,629 per screen average is a solid base to build on as we head into the weekend for wide release on Saturday.”

New Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F Interview, Super Not Yet Licensed

This past weekend, Sean Schemmel (the voice of Goku) and Chris Sabat (the voice of Vegeta) attended the four-day pop culture event known as the 2015 New York Comic Con. There, IGN caught up with these larger-than-life, voice acting superstars where they talked about their careers in voicing Dragon Ball Z for western audiences, the impact of the legendary anime, the latest movie (Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F), and some of their favorite voice actors. Take a look at the interview below.

Both Schemmel and Sabat were in town, along with Justin Cook (producer and voice of Dende) and Justin Rojas (FUNimation’s Senior Manager of Social Strategy and Development) to participate in a panel called Dragon Ball Z (and Beyond). The panel went into the history of Dragon Ball Z, its current theatrical success, and Dragon Ball Super! After 14 episodes of the series, many fans are wondering when Dragon Ball Super will make its official debut with the world-famous English dub. The answer, just as it was back in July when the series debuted in Japan, is that it’s currently unknown. In a video circulating the web from the panel, Rojas address Dragon Ball Super has not yet been licensed by FUNimation and is humorously met with a circus of boo’s from the audience.

You can see more of Schemmel, Sabat, and Cook in an enjoyable Saiyan Island interview when Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods was making its way to theaters in North America in 2014 and of course in Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F, which hits Blu-ray and DVD in North America on October 20.
