ANNGonzo to Animate Shangri-La Novel for TV
AMG film helmer Bessho, Noein writer Ohnogi, Blue Sub designer Murata
The October issue (on sale on September 10) of Kadokawa Shoten's Newtype magazine will announce that the Gonzo animation studio is adapting Eiichi Ikegami's Shangri-La science-fiction epic novel for television. The story takes place in the middle of the 2st century when global warming has turned Tokyo into a tropical city. To reduce the temperature at the heart of the city by 5°C (9°F), the city is being reborn as the world's largest forest city. However, despite the flow of refugees to the new city of Atlas, there are not many residents who can actually live there. Moreover, anti-government guerillas are attempting to stop the forestation.
For the anime version, Makoto Bessho (Ah! My Goddess: The Movie, Armitage: Dual-Matrix) will direct off the scripts that will be supervised by Hiroshi Ohnogi (Arjuna, Noein - to your other self). Takeshi Mori (Otaku no Video, Vandread) will be the creative producer, and famed illustrator Range Murata (Blue Submarine No. 6, Last Exile) will design the characters. Shingo Takeba (RahXephon, Eureka Seven) is serving as creative supervisor over a team of designers that includes Takuhito Kusanagi (Blue Submarine No. 6, Samurai 7), Hajime Satou (Karas, Solty Rei), and Umanosuke Iida (Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team, Tide-Line Blue).
The novel was serialized in Newtype magazine, and has been collected into one book volume in 2005. (The story is being reprinted in two volumes next month.) The anime will be the first Newtype work animated for television. Kadokawa's Zōkan Ace A Assault magazine began serializing a manga version by Karasuma Tasuku (Reideen) in March.
ANNCode Geass Speech Synthesizer Service Offered in Japan
Users can create their own spoken dialogue with Lelouch, C.C.'s voices
Not-So-Daily Link of the Day: The Internet service provider NEC Biglobe has announced on Monday that it is hosting a speech synthesizer service in which users can create their own spoken dialogue with the voices of characters from the Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2 anime series. Specifically, users can type in phrases for the software to "speak" in the voices of Lelouch (in his Zero persona) and C.C. Users can adjust the pitch, tempo, accent, and the echo effect of the lines as they wish.
The service's website has samples of Zero ("Shaberareru mono nara, yatte miru ga ii") and C.C. ("Watashi ga sō kantan ni shaberu to omou no ka?"), as well a few hundred lines submitted by users. (ANN is awaiting approval to publicly post a custom dialogue line that was created from scratch this morning.) The free version of the service allows users to enter up to 30 lines with a maxmum of 15 syllables each, while the paid version allows an unlimited number of lines up to 50 characters long. Users of the paid version can then download the dialogue lines they create in WAV or MP3 format, build short stories through playlists, or insert the voices in their blogs through "blog parts" applets (pictured above). Registration is required (in Japanese) for either version.
The Japanese software developers Animo and Celsys teamed up last year to produce a different speech synthesizer that can work with the animation tools created by Celsys. The virtual idol singer (and Internet phenomenon) Miku Hatsune is the creation of Vocaloid vocal music synthesizer, while the recording artist Gackt lent his voice to the latest spinoff from Vocaloid, Gackpoid.
ANNThe project centers around the bishōjo character designs of adult game illustrator Jin Happōbi (Boin). The titular Platonic Heart is a jewel that can grant any wish when collected, and only a chosen few 11 girls and women are allowed to compete in the Platonic Heart hunt. The first anime volume will ship in Japan on October 29.
