ANNDatabase Lists Over 60 Years of Manga Mags Online
From 1908-1955's Shōjo no Tomo to every manga printed in Shonen Jump
The "Post-War Japanese Shōnen and Shōjo Magazine Database" has launched on the Internet on Monday with Japanese listings for 1,221 magazines. The database is split into two parts: "The Era of Post-War Shōnen and Shōjo Magazines and Monthly Magazines" covers 24,841 volumes of 619 magazines with about 200,000 works from 1945 to 1962, while "The Era of Shōnen and Seinen Magazines and Weekly Magazines" covers 5,488 volumes of 602 magazines with about 173,452 issues from 1955 to 2007. For example, the first section lists 1908-1955's Shōjo no Tomo text and manga magazine. The second section lists last year's defunct Comic Charge magazine and 1,200 manga titles and features that have appeared in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine. (The 1,200 listings only represent part of Shonen Jump's manga and features more are being added to the database.)
The Contemporary Manga Library, Kawasaki City Museum、and the Japan Society for Studies in Cartoon and Comics oversaw the development of this database. There are different levels of access to the data, ranging from no-charge browsing to an annual 6,000-yen (about US$60) "Course C" fee for individual subscribers and an annual 380,000 yen (about US$3,800) "Course A" fee from complete access. (Academic institutions and public libraries have discounted fees.) Browsers can look up a magazine's company, publishing dates, volume count, manga titles, and authors in the database's second half without charge. Paid subscribers can access information about individual issues, editorial staff, price, and details about color inserts. Paid subscribers can also search by keyword.
ANN"Otaku" Murderer Tsutomu Miyazaki Executed on Tuesday
1988-1989 serial killings tarnished otaku's image in Japan
Tsutomu Miyazaki, the 45-year-old convicted serial killer whose 1989 arrest tarnished the image of otaku in Japan, was executed with two other murderers early Tuesday. Justice Minister Kunio Hatoyama announced the executions in a morning briefing after they had already occurred. The term "otaku" was already being used for introverted, obssessive fans in Japan before 1989. However, Miyazaki's case and essayist Akio Nakamori's writings about the case (pictured at right) simultaneously popularized the term and vilified it in the general public.
Miyazaki (no relation to Studio Ghibli director Hayao Miyazaki) was arrested on July 23, 1989 after he assaulted a 6-year-old girl while trying to take explicitly graphic photographs at a dry river bed near her home in Tokyo's Hachiko neighborhood. At Miyazaki's own home, police discovered 5,763 videotapes that included pornographic or violent live-action and anime videos. Police also found evidence that he murdered four girls four-year-old Mari Konno, seven-year-old Masami Yoshizawa, four-year-old Erika Nanba, and five-year-old Ayako Nomoto between 1988 and 1989.
Miyazaki's trial lasted from 1990 until 1997, when he was sentenced to death. The Tokyo High Court upheld the ruling in 2001, and the Japanese Supreme Court upheld it also in January of 2006.
Queen's Blade Fantasy Game Books Get TV Anime
The promotional sleeve wrapper on the Queen's Blade: Ōma no Jo-ō Arudora and Sentō Kyōkan Arein books (on sale on June 20) will announce that a television anime has been green-lit for the Queen's Blade combat picture book game series. Queen's Blade is Hobby Japan's Japanese spinoff from Flying Buffalo's Lost Worlds game series. In combat picture book games, players simulate turn-based fighting with books that each represent a character. For example, the two books above represent the twilight queen Arudora and the fighting instructor Arein.
The original game books feature characters designs by many popular artists, including Hirokazu Hisayuki (My-HiME), Kazuhiro Takamura (Mahoromatic), and Katsuzo Hirata (Hand Maid May). However, no announcement has been made on the staff of the anime. The game has already been adapted into drama CDs, novels, two manga series, and several anthology comics.

ANNMiyazaki Plans Museum Anime Shorts After Ponyo
Third Joe Hisaishi concert of Studio Ghibli music added in Japan
In a discussion with Toshio Tsuchiya (NTV's executive director of digital content), producer Toshio Suzuki revealed that Studio Ghibli's co-founder Hayao Miyazaki is planning anime shorts for the Ghibli Museum as his next projects. Miyazaki directed more than half of Ghibli's theatrical releases, including Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away. His latest, Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea, will open in Japan on July 19.
According to Suzuki, Miyazaki indicated that a story about sumo-wrestling mice would be good to do, a possible reference to a classic Japanese folk tale called Nezumi no Sumō (pictured at right). Miyazaki has already directed Ghibli Museum's "Mei to Konekobasu" short, an unofficial continuation of the 1988 film classic, My Neighbor Totoro.
In a separate development, the studio announced on Thursday that a third "Joe Hisaishi in Budokan" concert has been scheduled on August 5 due to overwhelming demand. Hisaishi has scored every feature film that Miyazaki directed for Studio Ghibli. The first two concerts sold out within half an hour.
ANNMacross Ace Frontier to Ship in Japan on PSP in Fall
Gundam Battle team's multiplayer game with 40+ mecha, 30+ pilots from 6 anime
Macross Ace Frontier, a multi-player 3D action game that will include characters and transformable fighters from 25 years and six different science-fiction anime works of Macross, will ship on the Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) game console in Japan this fall. One to four players (via the PSP's built-in ad-hoc network feature) will assume the roles of U.N. Forces pilots in three-mode variable fighters in space, air, and land combat. Artdink, the team responsible for the successful Gundam Battle franchise, is 60% finished with the game's development with Gundam Battle's engine.
Although the producers emphasize that the game will not be a romance simulation or a music rhythm game, the story will reference Macross anime's signature love triangles and music. They say the game will have fast gameplay and the anime's trademark corkscrewing missile plumes. Players can adjust seven parameters of their pilot characters' skill levels and eight additional parameters for their mecha (hit points, anti-cannon defenses, close-combat defenses, speed, instantaneous boost, balancer system, maneuverability, and radar). To emulate how anime characters quickly transform their fighters by angling a joystick, player will use the PSP's analog pad to transform.
So far, players can use the all-purpose VF-1 Valkyrie (with or without the Strike Pack upgrade) from the first Macross series and film, the advanced YF-19 prototype from Macross Plus, the unorthodox VF-19 Custom Excalibur from Macross 7, and the VF-25 Messiah, the newest variable fighter from the currently airing Macross Frontier. Players can also pilot enemy mecha such as the Zentradi battlepods, Macross Zero's Anti-U.N. SV-51, and the Varauta Fz-109 Elgerzorene fighter. Other mecha such as the Q. Rau powered armor, the Destroid ground robots, and the VF-22 Sturmvogel II special operations fighter also appear in the game's pre-release images. In all, the game will have over 40 different mecha units and over 30 pilots in over 80 missions.
Bandai Namco's Yoshitaka Gotō and Kei Hirono are the game's general producer and assistant, respectively. Artdink's Masanori Yagi is a producer in the game's development. Macross co-creator and director Shoji Kawamori devised the title of the game. Due to a copyright dispute involving Harmony Gold USA, with its partner Tatsunoko Production, and the creators of Macross, no Japanese Macross game has been officially released in English in recent years.

Scheinjugendliche), weiterhin straflos.
