ANNGhost in the Shell to Return to Japanese Theaters
2.0 edition to have new CG, Oscar-winning sound mixer, Skywalker Sound
Mamoru Oshii's first Ghost in the Shell cyberspace film will return to five Japanese theaters in an enhanced Ghost in the Shell 2.0 edition on July 12. The new edition will include new computer graphics and digital effects for some scenes and a reunion of most of the cast members for a new 6.1 surround sound recording. Academy-Award-winning sound mixer/editor Randy Thom (Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, The Incredibles, The Right Stuff) has overseen the new soundtrack with Kenji Kawai's original music and a final mix that has been produced at Thom and Lucas Digital's Skywalker Sound studio in California.
In the new edition, the enigmatic Puppet Master character will be played by Yoshiko Sakakibara (Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence's Harraway, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex's Prime Minister Yoko Kayabuki). Iemasa Kayumi (Giant Robo's Chief Chuujou Shizuo, RahXephon's Ernst Von Bähbem) played the role in the original edition.
The film will screen in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka, and Sapporo. Not coincidentally, Oshii's latest film, The Sky Crawlers, will open one month after Ghost in the Shell 2.0 on August 2.

ANN1st Anime Album in 11 Years to Rank in Japan's Top 3
Macross Frontier album reaches landmark after 1997's End of Evangelion CD
The original soundtrack for the Macross Frontier science-fiction anime series has reached #3 on Oricon's next weekly chart of all albums sold in Japan. The 72,000 sold copies make Macross Frontier Original Soundtrack I: Nyan Fro the first anime soundtrack to reach the chart's top 3 rankings in nearly 11 years. The last anime album to reach #3 or higher was The End of Evangelion soundtrack, which was first released on September 26, 1997. More sales of the Macross Frontier soundtrack are expected as many music stores across Japan had sold out and had to reorder more copies.
Popular composer Yoko Kanno (Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Macross Plus) worked on all 24 tracks on the Macross Frontier album. The album also features the "Triangler" opening theme from Maaya Sakamoto (Escaflowne, Cardcaptor Sakura) and the "Diamond Crevasse" ending theme from May'n (May Nakabayashi). Both songs reached #3 on Oricon's weekly charts of all singles sold in Japan. At one point in May, both singles ranked in the top 10 in the same week. At least two more singles are scheduled for release with May'n and one of Macross Frontier's main voice actresses, newcomer Megumi Nakajima.
Macross Frontier is the latest sequel to the Macross space opera series. Like the first Macross series, it features a space war, love triangles, three-mode transformable fighters, and pop music. The first Macross series spawned a film, The Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love?, and Mari Iijima's movie theme "Do You Remember Love?" became a top-ten single for six straight weeks as well as a top-40 song for all of 1984. At least six Macross albums (including the Macross: Do You Remember Love? soundtrack album) have placed on Oricon's weekly charts for all albums sold in Japan. (Evangelion has also placed six albums on the Oricon weekly album charts.)
ANNItazura na Kiss Anime to Show Creator's Planned Ending
Kaoru Tada told husband of unfinished manga's ending before fatal accident
The Mainichi Shimbun paper interviewed music producer Shigeru Nishikawa about the ongoing anime adaptation of his late wife Kaoru Tada's unfinished shōjo manga classic, Itazura na Kiss. Nishikawa says that Tada told him in January of 1999 that "I think I'll end [the manga] this year." She slipped into a coma after a home accident in February of that year and died the following month.
However, Nishikawa added that Tada told him her plot for the manga's finale, and her concept will be the basis for the anime scripts. While Nishikawa emphasized that the manga and anime are distinct from each other, he revealed that the anime will be the first time that the concepts for Tada's planned ending will be provided to fans in any form.
Unlike many other popular manga, Itazura na Kiss followed its romantic leads, the spirited Kotoko and "super-ikemen" (handsome male) Naoki, from high school all the way through their early adult life. It is considered the "bible of romance" for shōjo manga due to its influence on later authors. The anime began in April of this year.

ANNMan Buried by Manga Discovered Dead After Quake
37-year-old company worker had stacked books two meters high in his room
Not-So-Daily Link of the Day: Miyagi Prefectural Police officials in northeastern Japan have announced on Monday that they discovered a man dead in his apartment underneath several hundred manga volumes and magazines. They are investigating the cause of death and whether the 37-year-old male company employee is another casualty of last week's earthquake in Miyagi.
According to the investigation, the man's co-workers visited his apartment in Sendai City's Aoba Ward at around 9:00 p.m. on May 14 after he failed to appear at work. (The magnitude-6.8 earthquake occurred at 8:43 a.m. that day and caused 10 confirmed deaths so far.) The officials say that the man stacked books two meters (about six feet) high throughout his entire room. They consider it possible that the books fell on top of the man's chest and abdomen and thus prevented him from breathing. However, a June 15 autopsy was inconclusive, which left open the possibility that the man's death was unrelated to the earthquake.
