Perhaps the most famous fallout from a megaton announcement is former Joystiq writer Robert Summa. In 2006 he posted a tease about a major announcement from Nintendo that was under embargo until midnight of that night. When midnight rolled around and the big news was that chips for the Wii were currently in production at IBM, people were pissed, to say the least. The anti-hype tidal wave hit hard after this botched megaton and actually cost Summa his job at Joystiq.
As far as we can tell, the term “Megaton” entered the gaming lexicon in 2002 when users on the Gaming-Age-Forums posted an article from Japanese magazine JUMP!, which promised that Nintendo had a big upcoming announcement. The announcement was a dud, of course, but the term “megaton” stuck as a description for any announcement that might have a big impact on the industry.
The key to a real “megaton”, however, is that the original source isn’t ever the real announcement. It is an announcement of an announcement. It is the whole “Check back in a week and we’ll tell you something great” idea that builds up hype and gets people excited. 99% of the time, however, the final announcement is either something we already know or something we don’t really care about and isn’t a megaton-quality announcement at all.
@Kartoffel:
@Naughty:
