Do you own a JPN PS3? Do you not want it to be a CERO-controlled box?
Ok, here is the deal for those who haven't been following the Resistance issue:
Single SKU PS3 games that are just one game with multiple language versions on it, shipped all around the world, work by detecting the region of the PS3 they are being played on. If they are played on a US PS3 the games released so far will all work uncensored. Yet if the games released so far are played on a JPN PS3, Resistance and Untold Legends (both published by Sony) will be censored and missing blood as well as other things.
To get around this problem, for future violent games released in the US (and maybe even Japan), those of us with a JPN PS3 (DCharlie, TTP, Lyte Edge, etc...) have two choices to avoid the CERO censor-box scenario.
1. Import the US version of the game in question (less convenient) and download a starting save from anyone in the US (super easy to get) (aka, the person turned on the game, created a save [maybe saved if necessary at first save point] and turned it off) and load that save. You should then be playing the uncensored version that US players are playing.
2. Buy the domestic JPN version (convinient)and find a starting save from SOMEONE with a US system + JPN version of game in question (this could be really hard for something like God of War; why would anyone in the US have a JPN version), load it and then play the uncensored version the US players are playing.
Note there are two ways companies can screw us over:
1. Make the game check the region each time a save is loaded before resuming play and modify if needed.
2. Make the region-checking save a system save and make it uncopyable. Genji 2's system save is uncopyable while its normal game saves are copyable.
Also worth noting is that in all reality not many games are likely to be censored so this shouldn't be a big issue. Heck, it's likely the two Sony published games in question here weren't even censored by CERO but rather Sony didn't want D or Z rated games at launch, but rather C or better rated games so they'd be family friendly. These days the only games that truly seem to get cenosred in Japan are the very gorey US games and gorey Capcom JPN titles. And it's worth noting that this works both ways and some games in the US like KH2 and Xenosaga ep1-3 are got censored in the US to achieve lower ratings in order to attempt to sell more copies. In all actuality, censorship really should not exist in gaming as the most violent games still pale in comparison to many R-rated films; but because of the way society sees games as being for kids, censorship is likely to continue for some time.
Finally, this has all been concluded off tests with a single game (Resistance) so we are unsure of if the same workarounds will work for all games. I might go and pick up Untold Legends just for testing purposes to confirm that the fix works in that as well.
PS. I know some of the Insomniac guys are here, as well as other developers. We appriciate your games and we're doing this because we've bought (or will buy) your titles so please pretend you never saw this ;P
