While Sony revealed Wipeout HD officially at this past E3, it wasn’t until GC 2007 that we got to get our hands on it. On the surface, it looks like a beefed-up port of the PSP incarnations, but after sitting down with Sony Liverpool, Wipeout HD has much more to offer fans of the series than just a prettier download.
Sony Liverpool is taking what you loved about the PSP versions of Wipeout and improving it tremendously for the PS3. The only thing the team is taking from the PSP titles is the track geometry and the code base. Everything has been uprezzed to 1080p, and the gameplay will run at 60fps. Sony Liverpool is tweaking the handling physics of the vehicles, and seasoned PSP players should notice that racing in the game is much more pack oriented.
Wipeout HD will consist of eight vehicles and eight tracks from the PSP titles Wipeout Pure and the soon-to-be-released Wipeout Pulse. Liverpool won’t reveal all the tracks that will be included, but we do know two tracks will come from Pulse and six from Pure. The GC demo included two tracks, including Chenghou Project from Wipeout Pure and Anulpha Pass from the Wipeout Pure downloadable content Delta 1 Pack. The only other track we know will be included is Sebenco Peak from Gamma Pack 3.
Moving off of the PSP gives the developers more screen landscape to work with, and users will see a few new elements added to the HUD. With a new Proximity meter, racers will know how close opponents are. Even more important is an Incoming indicator, which will let you know that an opponent fired something at you and whether it’s coming at you from the front or back, left, right or from the middle. Within heated races, this will prove to be quite helpful.
The main single-player experience will be made up of the Race campaign, where gamers will have the ability to choose an event, and if they win the event, it will open up another event and award points to spend on unlockables. Events will range from speed laps, time trials and circuit races. Different from the PSP titles is the fact that all speed classes are open from the outset. Already have skills and want to skip the easy stuff in Venom? You can go straight to Phantom class.
Race Box is a new addition to the series and allows for quite a bit of flexibility for custom races and campaigns. In the Race Box, you can set up your own race or campaign and toggle such things as weapons on or off, speed classes and what courses you want included. Then, set the times for each of the tracks and send your created content off to your friends to see if they can best your times. Currently, users can’t create a campaign and then play that campaign online with friends, however, there’s potential for making that another feature either prior to the game’s release or as downloadable content.
Finally, Wipeout HD will include eight-player online racing. Sony Liverpool wouldn’t go into too much depth on the online feature set, but there will be online leaderboards. Also, much like the PSP incarnations, users will be able to upload their profiles to share with other players. Expanded from the PSP games, you’ll be able to see track records, how many weapons a player has fired, what weapon has been absorbed the most and much more.
Visually, for a game that was just “uprezzed,” and still pre-Alpha and going through its first pass, according to the team, it’s looking sharp for the most part. The audio is also early, but still pretty clean. Wipeout Pulse supported the ability for users to use their own MP3s, and with the PS3’s ability to store and stream audio it seems like a no-brainer. However, Sony Liverpool doesn’t know if they’re going to allow for that. At the least, there will be eight all-new licensed music tracks that will be mixed in 5.1 audio.
We have to admit, while we liked the PSP games, it’s really nice to play Wipeout again with a controller. Having analog air brakes really makes a difference, and although specifics are undetermined at this time, Wipeout HD will support some sort of Sixaxis control. After our time with Warhawk, the potential for users to fly the ship with the Sixaxis could be pretty slick.
While eight tracks do seem a little light, Sony Liverpool has left hooks in to allow for a multitude of different downloadable content. Whether it’s new tracks, new vehicles, modes or features, anything could be possible at this point. Most likely it won’t be classic courses from earlier Wipeouts such as Fusion or XL, because the team would have to create the entire courses from scratch. However, considering there’s quite a bit of content from both PSP games, including all of their downloadable content packs, the team has much they could move over to the PS3.
So what about an all new next-gen Wipeout title for the PS3? Considering the fact that my question if Sony Liverpool was working on another F1 title was laughed out of the room, you can more or less expect that there’s something going on at the developer. But for now, the team is focused on making sure Wipeout HD is primed for a Europe and North America for release by the end of the year. While it’s not the completely new game fans are waiting for, the improvements to what was already solid on the PSP and the addition of online play could make Wipeout HD another exciting addition to the PlayStation Store.
