Over The Top Games Interview - Icarian: Kindred Spirits

medium.jpg

One of the most promising WiiWare games due later this year has to be Icarian: Kindred Spirits which is being developed by the newly formed independent studio ‘Over The Top Games’ based in Madrid, Spain. The screenshots we have seen of the game so far look really nice, even LostWinds quality. If the gameplay is also as good we will have a winner on our hands here.

Intrigued by this stunning game we got in touch with the guys at Over The Top to find out more. Roberto Alvarez de Lara was only too happy to spare us the time to answer our questions:

WiiWare World: Can you tell us a bit about Over The Top Games studio?

Roberto Alvarez de Lara: Our studio was born with the intention to produce games that we would like to play ourselves. It’s great to be able to create games with total creative freedom. Currently based in Madrid, Spain, we are a small team of four people, all with several years of experience in different areas of game dev.

WW: What is the storyline in Icarian: Kindred Spirits about?

RL: In Icarian we’re telling the story of Nyx and Icarus.

Icarus, with his wings made of wax and feathers, flew so high that he reached a realm in the skies. There, he met a very special being…her name was Nyx.

Nyx, a young mysterious girl, automatically became fascinated by Icarus: he was the only human being she has ever met… and he had wings, just as her! From there a beautiful friendship starts. One day the earth mysteriously collapsed and Icarus disappears, leaving her alone. Nyx, worried about her friend, departs from her realm and goes in search of Icarus.

From there Nyx will have to fight in a hostile world, guided by Gods that will help in her quest to find what happened to Icarus.

WW: Would you say the similarities to Nintendo’s Kid Icarus are only superficial?

RL: Both Icarian and Kid Icarus are games inspired by the same source: the story of Icarus. When it comes to gameplay, our game takes full advantage of the Wii to present the player with very fun and challenging situations. Surely, fans of Kid Icarus will greatly enjoy our game.

WW: How do the controls work in Icarian? Is the flying action anything like that in LostWinds?

RL: With Nyx you can move and jump (in our case fly) as other platforms game. For this you use the Nunchuk + Wii Remote controls. The great thing about our game is that you can fly and stay in air a lot more time. You will be able to travel long distances just by flying. But be careful, you have limited flight endurance. Additionally, with brief movements of the Wii Remote the player is able to cast special movements to attack and defend from enemies. These are done using the Wii Remote.

Some Gods decide to help Nyx in her quest. So at the start of the game Nyx is very fragile. As the adventure proceeds the player receives powers to use while aiming at the screen. These powers let Nyx move obstacles, build stairs with rocks, impulse herself, shoot, etc.

WW: Can you tell us more about the power of the Gods you can summon and how this affects the gameplay?

RL: Most of the gameplay is designed around the God powers. When you start the adventure you receive one power by Zeus that let you move some objects in the scenery. With the help of this power you will be able to move rocks, columns and other obstacles.

You can do a lot with this power. Let me show you an example. You are facing a Hydra. This foe is a fierce big enemy that shoots fireballs at Nyx and is too powerful to be defeated by her. Well, if you have the powers of Zeus, you can use these fireballs to your advantage. Grab some of these with the Wii Remote and impact them to harm and beat the Hydra. This is a brief example of the kind of gameplay you will find in the game.

WW: How will the 2 player cooperative gameplay work in Icarian?

RL: One of the players will control the movements of Nyx. He will be able to run, jump and fly. The other player can play just with the Wii Remote (the Nunchuk is not required for the second player). He will be the one casting the powers and helping the first player. The fun part is that sometimes you need to be strongly coordinated, so you need to talk and synchronize with your buddy.

WW: The screenshots we have seen so far look no less than stunning. Can you tell us more about the artwork design and game engine you have developed?

RL: It’s a 3D engine developed entirely with custom technology. It’s specially designed to take the full advantage of the Wii, and, at the same time, be easily portable to other platforms. This will make things easier for us for the next projects.

Although the Wii graphics are not as powerful as other 'current-gen' consoles, we have paid special attention to develop and incorporate tools that let artists accomplish beautiful and very detailed sceneries. Most of the limitations have been corrected paying attention to shadows and lighting. Our goal was to create a very attractive game for the standards of this console.

For the graphics we were highly motivated by paintings by Dalí and Giorgio de Chirico. The environment and feeling we want to transmit are inspired in several of their works.

WW: How long will the game take an average gamer to complete?

RL: It will greatly depend of the type of player. Our game features levels that are more similar to old school platforms games and there are some places were you have to take your time and find the solution of a puzzle. We’re working hard to create a good balance between gameplay, number of levels and game length.

WW: Do you plan to launch in both Europe and North America? When do you expect the launch date to be roughly?

RL: Yes. Europe and North America are both targets. We want to be sure to release a highly polished game, so we won’t launch anything that we feel is incomplete in some aspect. The team is working hard, but our guesses are that you won’t need to wait very long

WW: How many Wii points will this retail for do you think?

RL: We still have to wait to what Nintendo has to say. They have the last word.

WW: What are some of Over the Top Games favourite WiiWare games so far and why?

RL: I’ve to say World of Goo. It’s a beautiful game with PERFECT gameplay and very polished graphics. Fun fun fun! It’s amazing how the initial concept grew into what today is known as World of Goo. Please tell them I applaud them!

World of Goo Soundtrack Now Available

medium.jpg

It seems the soundtrack trend continues and this time it's one of the most hotly-anticipated musical scores of 2008. That's right, 2D Boy has just made available for download, the entire World of Goo soundtrack for your listening pleasure. And the best part is that it's completely free!

The soundtrack is 49 minutes long and has been completely remastered by Kyle Gabler. The 2D Boy servers have been bombarded with traffic, so much so that a mirror has been created to help with the increased traffic. If you hit a dead end, keep trying as the traffic will eventually die down enough for everyone to get the soundtrack.

We'd like to take a moment to thank Kyle and the rest of 2D Boy for making this amazing soundtrack available for all. It's easily one of the best video game musical offerings of last year.

EA's Peter Moore Likes World of Goo After All

Remember when EA bigwig Peter Moore got all confused because he couldn’t fathom why World of Goo ranked so highly in Eurogamer’s top 50 of 2008? Well he’s now redeemed himself by singing the praises of 2D Boy’s awesome WiiWare title on his blog page.

Here's what the big guy said:

Before we close the door on one of the lively discussions that was breaking out here over the past couple of weeks, I want to come clean on my promise to play World of Goo. While I do have a day job, I had to at least download the demo and have a hand at the game before I moved on. By every admission, I am more of a sports guy and this isn't my default cup of tea, but there's a ton to admire in something so simple, yet full of impressive physics that make for an elegant and somewhat addictive experience (even in the demo!).

You've heard me talk for some time now about making our games more approachable and of our need to deliver more compelling direct to consumer experiences. There's a lot to learn from the EA alumni who started 2D Boy and built something as creative and unique as World of Goo, with such a small team and little money. It's that type of creativity and entrepreneurial spirit that can really drive innovation, and I'd like to think we're setting the right priorities and taking the right steps to deliver more experiences in this vein from EA SPORTS.

So there you have it – Peter Moore is not a man who is afraid to reassess his viewpoint. But as for following 2D Boy’s lead with EA Sports games…I sure hope that doesn’t mean we’ll be seeing a gooey physics-based mini game in the next Madden title.

Review: High Voltage Hot Rod Show

large.jpg

Will this highly anticipated WiiWare racer take pole position, or will it merely drive us to distraction?

High Voltage Hot Rod Show is all about taking control of large trucks and racing them against each other, which is all well and good. However, because of certain game design choices, the trucks themselves handle more like a cross between an R/C car and a skateboard. In real life, not too many trucks can perform a ‘hop’ (at least that was true last time we checked). Fewer still can hop and then flip over end to end in mid-air and land on their wheels, miraculously gaining a speed boost from doing so. Suffice it to say that realism is obviously not what the designers were going for here, so let’s just play along and see how WiiWare’s latest hi-octane racer turns out.

The gameplay is actually quite engaging. It’s your typical top-down race view in which you race to complete a set number of laps faster than the other drivers played by either the computer or up to three other humans (local play only). Each of the six courses is littered with twists, turns, and obstacles that can either slow your progress or help you depending on your skill. Even though the trucks handle nothing like one would expect, for what it is the game is still a joy to play.

Like most racers, the driving skills you develop as you become more experienced with the controls will play a large part in determining whether or not you win the race. Most of your challenge comes not from driving or steering. Rather, the primary focus of the game is to perform mid-air stunts after jumping off a ramp. These stunts provide you with a speed boost upon landing. The more stunts you perform in a jump, the greater your speed boost. However, performing a stunt too late will result in your truck toppling and costing you speed; the key to winning the game is to get good at performing these stunts and do them as often as possible.

There are other secondary considerations to driving. The ever-popular speed boost arrow is present here. Also you can ram enemy trucks causing them to lose control. There is a powerslide feature for rounding corners, however we found this to actually be far less convenient or advantageous than simply rounding the corner at full speed. But these other considerations pale in comparison to performing mid-air stunts. The game is sort of a one-trick pony in that respect and may look somewhat silly to an outsider catching his first glimpse of a screen full of trucks hopping and spinning around a race track. Those concerns aside, these mechanics are still fun and rewarding for at least a little while.

The game really shines when it comes to control options. Every controller option is available for you to choose from, including the steering wheel and the Gamecube controller. This is great for racing game fans as it means you can continue to use your controller of choice. However, we found that the difficulty of the game fluctuates dramatically depending on the controller you use. This is especially true of the steering wheel. In Mario Kart, the steering wheel is slightly more difficult to use than the other options, but here the tracks are much narrower and the steering much more sensitive. This results in very over responsive steering making the steering wheel considerably more challenging. Obviously, practice makes perfect and some players will enjoy this added challenge. But their friends playing with the other controller options will find the game to be a breeze by comparison.

The game features three difficulty levels in the single player campaign. However, all three are pretty easy and most veterans of Mario Kart, F-Zero or other racers will likely win the first place trophy on their first attempt. There are only six courses, so they will be reused throughout the campaign. After you have played them a few times, you will be able to improve your score through memorization. However, this is not necessary in the single player game as the computer players will not be much of a challenge.

One of the games weaknesses is the challenge level. Other racing games have been accused of ‘rubber-banding’ (the technique of adjusting the skills of computer players in game to ensure that every race is close). That does not seem to be in effect here as players will either win or lose to the computer entirely based on their own driving skills. There are no items to help you catch up when you are behind, you’re just stuck there unless you start to drive better. Similarly, once you take the lead, nothing is likely to take that lead away from you unless you make some mistakes. The result is a game that is admittedly more skill oriented, but also more boring as players are unlikely to interact with one another very much during a race.

When players venture over to the time trial mode they will find both local and online leaderboards to compare top finishing times with others. This might sound like not much of a big deal, but it is surprisingly rare for such a feature to be included in a Wiiware game and, with only six courses, should help provide some lasting entertainment for those looking for an excuse to keep playing the same tracks over and over.

For a game that features truck racing, one would expect the trucks to be featured more prominently. You can unlock additional skins by beating each skill level. However, aside from an initial view at the start of a race, all of the trucks are viewed from the top down during a race and so do not really look all that different, regardless of which truck or skin you choose. Worse, all of the trucks race the same. There are no individual characteristics like engine power, sharp cornering or any of that sort as is typically found in racing games. The lack of such may make the game fairer as it puts all of the players on a level playing field, but it wastes an opportunity for a lot of the fun that comes from experimenting and trying different vehicles and only contributes to the overall lack of longevity in the game.
Conclusion

High Voltage Hot Rod Show is lots of fun to play. With its emphasis on stunts rather than items or vehicle tweaking the game carves out a niche seen more often in snowboarding games than in vehicle racing. Although the game is catchy and unique, players should not expect it to live up to the standards set by the big names in videogame racing. It’s short course list, lack of online play, and easy computer opponents mean that the game will have a short life span unless you bring some friends over to play it with you. Even so, with it’s amusing and easy to pick up and play mechanics, its multiple controller options, and easy on the eyes graphics this is a solid WiiWare release which is worth investigating.

Yet another WiiWare game's US release date has been confirmed in advance - You can expect Niki - Rock 'n Ball in the Wii Shop next Monday, the 26th.

After the disappointment of Plättchen: Twist 'n' Paint, we must admit we didn't have high hopes for this game, but when it was released in Europe we actually found it quite good, and, at just 500 Wii Points, how can you resist? While Plättchen was a puzzler, Niki's more of a platformer/action mixture, not completely unlike arcade games such as Bubble Bobble and Snow Bros., but of course with its own interesting twists.

The press release announcing the game's US release date is below:

Bplus, independent software developer, today happily announces the release of its second WiiWare title Niki - Rock 'n' Ball this coming Monday, January 26th 2009, in North America on WiiWare™, for the irresistible price of only 500 WiiPoints™.

Niki – Rock 'n' Ball is a new interpretation of the unforgettable Arcade classics, where the only goal is to vanquish all opponents to reach the next stage, with a completely innovative and unique gaming mechanism and beautiful 2.5D graphics.

Roll along with Niki Ball through fantastic worlds, find all the ZeLeLi pearls and liberate your village from cuddly as well as evil monsters before it is too late!

Timing is everything! Jump in the nick of time to avoid landing amidst barbs and hop about across the stages, thanks to the realistic gaming physics. Snap on the ZeLeLi amulet, transform yourself into Niki Rock and force even the most obstinate monster to its knees!

Explore all the stages and win valuable medals dribbling through them alone or along with a friend.

Play Niki – Rock 'n' Ball with all the familiar controls in the Retro style or experience the novel controls in the Wii™ style!

More Square Enix Goodness on WiiWare - Crystal Defenders

medium.jpg

If you've got one of the popular iPhones and have checked out the library of downloadable games for it, you might have noticed that last month, they released a game for it called Crystal Defenders. In this shameless Tower Defense copy, you put down various character classics from Final Fantasy Tactics A2 (DS) and hope that they manage to kill all enemies before they can get to the end of the path.

Square Enix announced in the newest edition of the Japanese magazine Famitsu that the game will be heading to all three major console download services as well - WiiWare, Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network. The magazine explicitly refers to the XBLA and PSN versions as "enhanced ports", while it doesn't call the Wii version a port at all - Could it be a totally new game?

The WiiWare version is called "Crystal Defenders R1", features Wi-Fi support (Which probably means DLC, because it's a single player game!) and will cost 1000 Wii Points. It's coming out rather fast, too - Japan will be getting the game next Tuesday! The game has not been confirmed for release elsewhere yet, but seeing as this is Square we're talking about, it's quite likely it will be released everywhere.

Famitsu also has some screens of the WiiWare version - We've added these as screenshots until we get better ones.

Bubble Bobble Wii - Now With 4 Player Support

medium.jpg

The latest edition of Famitsu has more goodness - The first screens of Taito's Bubble Bobble remake, Bubble Bobble Wii!

The screens are very small, but we can at least tell a few things by looking at them closely - It has the same minimalistic graphical style as the original game (Available on VC), features new levels, and has 4-player support!

The Famitsu article also reveals that the game is taking a page from Taito's other WiiWare game, Space Invaders Get Even - The game will have DLC! For 800 Wii Points you'll get 100 classic stages, 100 new stages, and "hard" versions of all of those levels - There will be two DLC packs with 50 "very hard" stages each. These packs will cost 200 Wii Points each.

The latest Famitsu does not have any information on Taito's other upcoming retro WiiWare remake, Rainbow Island Tower, but we assume it is coming out later this year.

Top 20 WiiWare Games in USA (21st Jan)

Here is the list for the 21st of January:

1 (1) - World of Goo
2 (2) - Tetris Party
3 (3) - My Aquarium
4 (4) - Cue Sports - Pool Revolution
5 (12) - Sandy Beach
6 (5) - Fun! Fun! Minigolf
7 (6) - Dr Mario Online Rx
8 (7) - Target Toss Pro: Bags
9 (8) - Brain Challenge
10 (10) - Midnight Bowling
11 (9) - Tiki Towers
12 (11) - Defend your Castle
13 (13) - My Pokémon Ranch
14 (15) - Wild West Guns
15 (14) - TV Show King
16 (16) - Mega Man 9
17 (17) - Frat Party Games - Pong Toss
18 (18) - Bomberman Blast
19 (19) - Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King
20 (20) - Sudoku Challenge

Well as hard as it tried, Cue Sports - Pool Revolution couldn't break into the Top 3. It seems the reign of the "Big Three" will continue with no real end in sight. I guess we could label Sandy Beach as the newest contender to knock one of the top 3 out, since it's now at #5 right behind Cue Sports - Pool Revolution.

Not one new game broke into the Top 20 this week and in truth there wasn't a lot of big movements on this week's charts other than Konami's Sandy Beach, which was this week's big climber jumping 7 spots to #5. The biggest dropper was Tiki Towers, which fell a paltry 2 spots to #11. Most of the other games moved only one spot if they moved at all. Not a terribly interesting Top 20 this week to be sure.

Super Meat Boy Slides Onto WiiWare Later This Year

medium.jpg

If you're familiar with flash game site Newgrounds you're no doubt aware that there's some very talented game creators there - Some of the contributors even formed their own videogame company, The Behemoth, and made Alien Hominid and Castle Crashers for consoles.

It's now been announced that yet another Newgrounds game is taking the step to consoles. Meat Boy, created by Edmund McMillen, will be brought to WiiWare under the ever so slightly longer name Super Meat Boy. If you're not familiar with the original game you can play it on Newgrounds here, but be warned, while it starts deceptively easy it gets frustratingly hard very fast!

Check out the press release for more details:

Are you a fan of small cubes of animated meat?

Do you enjoy the sound of buzz saws?

When you hear the term "wall jump" do you get excited?

Well, what if you woke up to find you were made of a lump of juicy raw meat, your girlfriend was made of band-aids and to top it all off she had been kidnapped by a fetus in a jar wearing a suit and monocle? Would that be totally awesome? or just kinda awesome?

Well I'm hoping you chose totally awesome, because that's basically the premise of Super Meat Boy.

In Super Meat Boy you take the role of a small animated cube of meat on his quest to save his lady love Band-Aid girl from the clutches of the evil Dr. Fetus! Sliding his way through saw mills, salt factories and even hell itself, Meat boy jumps into action in this fast paced and extremely challenging platformer that will "melt your face off".

Super Meat Boy is based off the popular flash game Meat Boy hosted by Newgrounds.com. http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/472826

Super Meat Boy will be completely remade from the ground up for its release on Wiiware™ and will feature over 100+ single player levels, insane boss fights, competitive vs modes, beefy co-op play and a slew of unlockables that are rumored to fill your life with great happiness!

SMB (best abbreviation ever) is being designed by Gish co-creator Edmund McMillen, Tommy Refenes and "Big" Jon McEntee.

We will be documenting Meat Boy's rebirth for Wiiware on our development blog via Supermeatboy.com so feel free to pop in and tell us all your lame ideas we will never use!

Pole's Big Adventure Coming To Japanese WiiWare

medium.jpg

What do you get when you cross the original Super Mario Bros. game with some extremely over-the-top risque humor? You basically get Sega's upcoming Japanese WiiWare title Pole's Big Adventure. Yes, you read that correctly. The character's name is Pole. And if you're dirty mind immediately thought of a certain male appendage, you're on the right track.

Pole's Big Adventure looks to be a very standard NES-like (or dare we say Master System?) platformer title on the outside, but if you look deeper you'll find a game that will basically push the envelope for crude humor and just from looking at early screenshots of the game in action, it seems like the game will obviously poke some fun at our friendly neighborhood plumber Mario. As if to not be too obvious, the official Japanese web site even features a large mushroom on it, although the word mushroom is also a Japanese slang term for the aforementioned male appendage, so we'll leave further speculation to you readers on this one.

The game is set to hit the Japanese WiiWare service on February 3rd and has already received a "B" rating from CERO, so this odd humor should be interesting to see. While we'd love to see the game released outside of Japan just to be able to experience this game's unique brand of humor, there's been no official announcement of the game being released on the North American or European WiiWare services at the current time.

We'll keep you posted on any future developments regarding Pole's Big Adventure. Until then you can take a look at a couple of screenshots of the game in action from Japanese Famitsu magazine.

Update: You can now find out lots more about this game on the official Pole's Big Adventure website. For only 500 Wii points this is looking pretty good. Let's hope it gets a release outside Japan!

Want Toki Tori Merchandise? Speak Up Now!

Two Tribes is trying hard to get more people interested in their awesome WiiWare puzzler, Toki Tori. Last week they decided to start making blog posts about the game's development, but this week they're going one step further.

Apparently lots of people have already requested Toki Tori merchandise, but the costs to make these were quite high. Two Tribes isn't exactly that big of a company, so they never really considered making any merchandise, as they would not be able to afford it. Recently however, a new company called Shapeways emerged, offering cheap 3D printing.

Obviously Two Tribes tried this out right away, and got a very nice-looking beta build of what could be a Toki Tori action figure or plushie. Now the question is, of course - Is the demand for these high enough to actually make fully coloured models and sell them, or would Two Tribes be wasting their time? They want to know what you think, so if you'd like to have a Toki Tori figure sitting on your desk then head over to their site and speak your mind now.

USA WiiWare Update: Niki - Rock 'n' Ball

The only game today on WiiWare for North America is Niki - Rock ‘n’ Ball by Austrian developers, Bplus. It is a new interpretation of the unforgettable Arcade classics such as Bubble Bobble or Snow Bros, where the only goal is to vanquish all opponents to reach the next stage. Of course there are a few twists to bring the gameplay up to date.

Those of you with good memories will recall that this game debuted in Europe last month so you might want to check out our Niki - Rock ‘n’ Ball review to decide if this is the game for you or not. At the low price point of 500 Wii points we were impressed and gave it a wonderful 8/10.

If rolling balls don’t seem like your cup of tea then you might want to go retro and head on over to the Virtual Console and download the Master System classic, Wonder Boy in Monster Land. It’s an oldie, but a goodie!

Gravitronix blog update - Menus, Testing and Staff Bios

We had drawn up a different system for our team selection menu a few weeks back and Adam and Folini have it 90% completed as of today. One of the challenges we faced early on was creating a menu system which would allow up to 8 players to select from 8 different characters, then allow them all to choose a place on the arena in the next screen.

This was, to put it mildly, daunting.

North American WiiWare/VC releases for Jan. 26th

Well, I can say one thing for sure. Niki: Rock ‘n’ Ball is better than B+’s last WiiWare title. It’s still strange…but it’s a step up. I hope to see their quality of work continue upwards.

Toribash Coming To WiiWare

medium.jpg

The developers of Toribash have just confirmed that they're currently developing a version of their extremely unique fighting game for Nintendo's WiiWare service via their official blog.
Toribash can best be characterized as a physics-based one-on-one fighting game that allows players to have unparalleled control over their figher's game play moves. Unlike many other fighting games out there, Toribash places a greater emphasis on strategy rather than quick reflexes.

Innovation
Toribash gives players unprecedented freedom by providing them with total independent control over their fighter's bodies. With 20 points of articulation, and 4 options for each, there are more than a trillion different possible configurations at any time.

The result is a game where players are bound only by their imaginations, empowered to explore and create their own unique fighting styles to a degree completely unthinkable in any other game.

The Toribash WiiWare version has many new and exciting features, such as a cool particle effects system. This is used for impacts, gripping etc... Makes the game much more fun to watch, and everyone loves impact effects!

Toribash WiiWare will include multiplayer to fight against other Wii-ers. However, Wii people will not be able to play against the PC peoples. The Wii has no multiplayer queues, so no more waiting! Just complete Toribash fun. (searches for other players who are looking for fights).

You can take a look at a few of the static screenshots the developers have recently made available above as well as a gameplay video below. We'll have more information on Toribash as it becomes available as well as a full review once it hits the WiiWare service.
