Jungle Speed swings onto WiiWare next week

large.jpg

Along with the release of Planet Pachinko this coming Monday, WiiWare gamers will also be treated to the delights of a jungle themed card game by the name of Jungle Speed. This might not be everyone’s cup of tea but we’re sure some younger gamers might get a kick out of it.

More from the press release below:

Vancouver, Canada (January 8th, 2008) – The internationally renowned, lightning-fast card game from Asmodee Editions, Jungle Speed, is coming to WiiWare on January 12th. It’s fun for the entire family, where quick reflexes and a keen eye will put you on top. Flip your cards, pay attention and grab the totem at the right moment to win the game.

Jungle Speed is a twitchy, fast-paced WiiWare game that’s fun for all ages. It’s also the first Wii game to offer simultaneous play for up to eight players. Each remote and nunchuk pair can support two players at a time, making it a great game for get-togethers. Just watch the elbows!

Available for 1000 Wii points, Jungle Speed is not for the faint hearted. Players must watch carefully and react quickly. With a jungle character seated comfortably at the game table, players are each dealt a pile of cards. Play starts when the first person flips their card. Moving around the table symbols are revealed until two of the exposed cards match. Players with the matching cards must then scramble to grasp the totem in the middle of the table. The faster player then gives their cards to their unfortunate adversary. With paws flying, the first person to get rid of all their cards wins the game.

To add to the difficulty, certain cards are almost identical, which can trick a hapless player into grabbing the Totem by mistake -- a grave error. Other cards force all players to make a grab at once, change the method of play, or otherwise add to the difficulty. And just when you think you’ve got it down, a special card can change the rules and keep you on the edge of your stump. Every game is an exciting new experience.

It’s been said that Jungle Speed was invented by the Aboulou Tribe in subtropical Spidopotamia. The Aboulous used eucalyptus leaves as cards for the game, which was played to determine shares in the spoils of a hunt, but the leaves were identical and no one ever won. This simple error almost drove the tribe to extinction. Jungle Speed remained unknown to the outside world until two clever gamethropologists, Tom and Yako, invented the modern day playing cards that spawned the WiiWare version.

Jungle Speed is being published by Playful Entertainment Inc. and was produced with the financial participation of Telefilm Canada.

Nicalis Updates Cave Story Progress

In an entry yesterday on their official blog, Nicalis spoke a little bit about the progress on their upcoming WiiWare title Cave Story. They also let gamers in on a little surprise announcement regarding some additional content for the game as well.

You can check out the relevant quote from the blog entry below to find out exactly what this nice little surprise they have in store for WiiWare fans was.

Yes, we’ve been MIA for a bit. No, I’m not dead. And, no, Cave Story for Wii hasn’t been killed. Truth be told we did try to make it in time for Christmas, however, we weren’t able to do so. We’ve taken more time to make sure everything is perfect.

We’re still working away at Cave Story trying to make sure it’s faithful to Amaya-san’s original while adding a few things for the console release. One of these new additions, I’m happy to announce is Download Content. I think we received enough e-mails demanding it that we’re doing our best to include some new surprises in the WiiWare release. You’re going to have to wait for more info on that.

The game is obviously not finished yet, so those gamers who have been constantly holding their breath for a WiiWare release week after week can finally relax for a bit. On the good side of things, at least the prospect of some additional downloadable content is a nice surprise.

We'll have more information on Cave Story as it becomes available, as well as a full review of the game once it hits the WiiWare service.

Pop Them, Drop Them SameGame Hits Japan Next Week

It's time for another Hudson WiiWare game! The oddly named Pop Them, Drop Them SameGame, based on the old PC game SameGame will be available in Japan next Tuesday.

Costing a mere 500 Wii Points this simply seems to be an update of the classic game, featuring upgraded graphics, (presumably) music and multiplayer modes. Of course there are also some Hudson touches applied - You can change the tiles to Bomberman heads, if you want!

If you don't have any clue what SameGame is about - Basically, you click on a tile of a certain colour. It, and all tiles which touch it that have the same colour (And all the titles with the same colour touching those, etc.) will disappear, and any tiles that were stacked on top will fall down. The more tiles you destroy with one click, the better, of course! The playing field in SameGame is usually pretty huge - It's therefore not unlikely that you might even split the playing field in half, with no way to connect one side to the other.

Strangely enough, this means Japan is skipping Snowboard Riot for now, despite it being the next scheduled WiiWare game for the US and Europe. Pop Them, Drop Them SameGame is expected to be released in Europe in February. A US release has not been announced yet.

Fool gamers with your fake Art Style: ORBIENT shirt

thumb_Birth_of_the_Moonat2Standard.png

That looks like an Art Style: ORBIENT shirt to me. According to the information on Woot, this shirt has nothing to do with the game. That doesn’t matter to us, though! If you are a huge fan of the WiiWare title, I don’t think there’s any other shirt that will come close to representing what the game’s all about! Go ahead and proudly wear it as an Art Style shirt…we won’t tell anyone about your secret.

I know it’s not an official shirt, but when I saw it I thought of Art Style: Orbient. It looks like when absorb another planet or crash into one and even has the gravity or anti-gravity lines. The person that make this did not base it off of Orbient. You can get it at Woot for only $10.

High Voltage Voltage Hot Rod Show Dated For 19th Jan

medium.jpg

Way back in October we caught up with our pals at High Voltage to bring you the inside scoop on their upcoming racing game High Voltage Hot Rod Show.

This Micro Machines style racer certainly looks like it could pack a punch when it hits WiiWare, which fortunately will not be a long wait for North American gamers as the press release below confirms:

Hoffman Estates, IL – January 8, 2009 - High Voltage Software, Inc., one of the world’s largest independent developers, today announced that High Voltage Hot Rod Show, the company’s latest WiiWare title, has been scheduled for release via Nintendo’s downloadable service on January 19th at a price of 1,000 Wii Points.

High Voltage Hot Rod Show is an arcade-style racing title that centers on a unique boost system which requires players to pull off dare-devil stunts in order to achieve maximum speed. The game was built using the company’s proprietary Quantum 3 Game Engine technology, which provides stunning graphical performance.

“We want to wish racing fans a happy New Year by announcing the release of High Voltage Hot Rod Show,” said Kerry J. Ganofsky, CEO and founder of High Voltage Software. “Wii owners who are looking for a tightly focused and highly competitive racing experience should look no further.”

“The team worked extremely hard to refine the look and feel of the game,” said Eric Nofsinger, Chief Creative Officer of High Voltage Software. “Whether you’re playing against AI, working to beat the best online leaderboard times, or racing up to four of your friends in split-screen mode, we think players will be blown away by the experience.”

Bit.Trip: Beat Coming To WiiWare

large.jpg

What do you get when you cross the arcade classic Pong with a music/rhythm game? The end result would probably be close to Aksys Game's new WiiWare title Bit.Trip: Beat.

Much like Pong, you still move your paddle around by tilting the Wii Remote, but in this unique WiiWare title you'll have to bounce the blocks off your paddle in rhythm with the pumping musical beats the game makes use of. The sound of the blocks bouncing off of your paddle will even give off musical notes that will blend in with the background music if you time it correctly.

The patterns of the blocks gets increasingly difficult throughout the game, especially during the game's boss battles, so you'll have your work cut out for you if you expect to play through the entire game.

You'll always be able to tell how well your doing by the music and visuals in the background. If you're playing poorly the visuals will be basic black and white visual patterns and the music will only be simple beeps, whereas if you're playing well you'll be treated to much flashier visuals and music.

The game will even allow you to team up with up to 4 other players in a cooperative game play mode for increased intensity.

Beat will only be the first of up to five Bit.Trip releases from the developer, so this game will only be the beginning if things go according to the developer's plans.

We'll have more information on Bit.Trip: Beat as it becomes available, as well as a full review once the game hits the WiiWare service.

USA WiiWare Update: Planet Pachinko and Jungle Speed

Hold on to your seats, guys – because today’s exciting WiiWare releases have just been confirmed!

First up we have Planet Pachinko, which might sound like a simulation of the popular Japanese gambling machine but is in fact a zany shooter where you assume the role of a robot looking for its puppy. Aww. At 500 points this could be quite appealing, and the recent interview we did with Allied Kingdoms certainly piqued our interest.

Next up is Jungle Speed. This is essentially a card game based on fast reflexes and multiplayer involvement, and at 1000 points we think it might be a little overpriced. Still, we’ll withhold final judgment until we’ve had chance to review it properly – which, as always, will be as soon as humanly possible.

Elsewhere on the ‘network’ we have some retro-tinted goodness over at Virtual Console Reviews in the shape of today’s news – fans of vintage gaming can now enjoy the excellent Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse.

Bit.Trip Beat To Bring Classic Arcade Gameplay To WiiWare

medium.jpg

It was only a few days ago that we posted the sneak peek from this month’s Nintendo Power which revealed the first of Aksys Games’ retro styled series of games, Bit.Trip Beat which is coming to WiiWare.

Some people may have thought Capcom were crazy for choosing the 8-bit NES style for Mega Man 9, but Aksys Games appear to be going one step further with the Bit.Trip series of games, they look more akin to blocky pixel style of Atari 2600 games! Bit.Trip Beat certainly looks original, coupled with the addictive old skool arcade gameplay this could be one to watch out for.

Check out the press release and video clip below:

Torrance, CA (January 13, 2009) - Aksys Games, a publisher of interactive entertainment software, is pleased to unveil BIT.TRIP BEAT exclusively for WiiWare™! Developed by Gaijin Games, BIT.TRIP BEAT marks the first adventure of Commander Video. Using the Wii Remote™, players will test their twitch skills as they battle through a retro-esque universe, familiar to the old generation and yet reinvented for the new.

BIT.TRIP BEAT STORY

Everything comes from something. We were before we became. From life comes rhythm, and from rhythm comes life. We are beings of information. Everything is a conduit for learning. We communicate in bits and bytes. And we will return to something once we become nothing; after our BIT.TRIP is complete. “BIT.TRIP BEAT is a crazy mix of 80s aesthetics and modern game design,” states Michael Manzanares, Producer of Aksys Games. “It’s challenging, yet fair, and completely addicting.”

“The Gaijin Games team wanted to make a game that used the tools of today to inspire the fun of yesterday. Our goal was to make a game that was as simple in gameplay as the games of the early 80s and equally as fun–even though gamers’ tastes have changed over the years,” continues Alex Neuse, Designer of Gaijin Games. “And let’s face it, sometimes a really good videogame is just awesome. We hope you enjoy BIT.TRIP BEAT.”

Key Features:

· Bring Back That Loving Feeling: BIT.TRIP BEAT brings back the classic arcade-style gameplay where getting the high score matters!

· Pixel Blocks For The Win: Keeping the arcade-style gameplay isn’t enough, BIT.TRIP BEAT sports a unique retro-inspired art style that will stimulate your senses.

· Old School Tunes: Who said old-school 8-bit music was out? BIT.TRIP BEAT bumps the latest chiptune music to keep the action fresh!

· Friends Can Play Too!: Can’t beat a level? No problem, BIT.TRIP BEAT allows 2 to 4 player co-op mode! But don’t think that makes it any easier…

BIT.TRIP BEAT has not been rated by the ESRB. More information about Aksys Games and BIT.TRIP BEAT can be found at www.aksysgames.com/bittripbeat Nintendo trademarks used under license. WIiWare is avaialble through the Wii console.

Luc Bernard tells us about Mecho Wars

I wanted to see what was really going with Mecho Wars, because we had heard that it was coming to WiiWare, and then we heard that that wasn’t true. Luc Bernard himself was nice enough to give us the full scoop.

Basically I will be revealing my company name soon. The possibilites of Mecho Wars on the Wii is 100% sure, since my company should be applying to become a developer soon. Mecho Wars should be released in March, however the wiiware version it depends how long it takes us to become a developer. - Luc Bernard

And with that, check out the link below for some brand new Mecho Wars art.

Fresh Details About Gravitronix

medium.jpg

Cast your minds way back to the early days of WiiWare. A few developers spilled the beans about the games they were working on. One of those developers who were around at the very beginning were Medaverse with their innovative action/battle game Gravitronix. Heck we first posted about it back in October 2007!

Since then we’ve done an interview with the guys and they’ve even been on TV to talk about the game. After all this time you might be wondering why Gravitronix is still missing in action. After all we haven’t even seen a screenshot yet.

Worry not faithful readers, Medaverse have not forgotten you. The Medablog has been updated with exciting new details that should pique your attention until at least 2010. We have to admit this game does sound intriguing and for $5 it should be an absolute steal. Let’s hope the long wait is almost over.

First Details Of Riverman Media's Next Game

medium.jpg

Remember Riverman Media? Of course you do, they brought the fiendish falling block puzzler, MadStone to WiiWare back in October. We enjoyed the strategic gameplay and awarded it a respectable 7/10. If you haven’t yet checked it out, why not do so today?

The guys at Riverman have revealed some exclusive new details about their next game, which thankfully isn’t another puzzler. We’re thinking it sounds like original Mario Bros arcade game, with the addition of being able to control a Star Wars-like force power with the Wii Remote pointer. Check out the untitled game's synopsis for yourselves to draw your own conclusions:

RiverMan Media's next WiiWare project is an arena-based 2D platform game in which a family of telekinetic siblings defend their hometown against monsters. Standard platform mechanics are enhanced by allowing the player to control their telekinetic powers using the Wii Remote's pointer. Players can throw objects, build defensive walls, trap enemies, levitate themselves, flip switches, and grab items, all by using the power of their minds! The game features fast, cooperative, four-player action, a variety of game modes, and lots of unlockable content. The game will use RiverMan's new proprietary animation system, DMorph, for limitlessly smooth 2D animation, and Box2D, the physics system used in Crayon Physics.

This concept has been approved by Nintendo and development is well underway. Expect to see some screenshots soon when they are ready for public consumption.

In other Riverman news, the guys have just done fascinating a post-mortem with Gamasutra about the journey of developing and publishing MadStone. It is a long feature, but well worth a read. On page 3 WiiWare World even gets a namecheck, mostly due to the demented ramblings of regular comment board contributor AlexSays.

Do let us know what you think about the revelation of Riverman’s next WiiWare game and the MadStone post-mortem. No doubt Jacob will answer any questions you might have.
