Nintendo Secrectly Releases New Product

+++
Hier ein Bild (Klick mich!!!)

While perusing the aisles of my local Target this evening, I noticed something that caught my attention.

Nintendo has apparently just released a controller combo pack that includes a Wii Remote, Nunchuck, and Mario Kart Steering wheel, without telling a soul in the press. This is very bizarre as game companies usually like us to be aware of even the most mundane of its business moves (e.g. picture pack releases on Xbox Live.)

This is an officially licensed set that includes all authentic Nintendo accessories. Somewhat surprising though, is the $74.99 price point for the bundle.

Some may seek out the pack thinking they are getting a good deal, but don’t let this fool you. Nintendo has done nothing for the consumer in terms of savings. Bought separately, all of the items in the bundle cost the exact same price as the bundle. Technically, you would save two cents by purchasing them individually. Wii Remote ($39.99) + Wii Wheel ($14.99) + Nunchaku ($19.99) = $74.97.

Maybe that is why Nintendo didn’t release any information on the product; customers may mistakenly think they have stumbled upon a gold mine.

It is not known if this is a Target exclusive or not. No other store websites have such a product listed.

Putting aside the technicality of the bundle costing two cents less, there really is no benefit or loss to either Nintendo, or the consumer. So where is the motivation for releasing this?

Some at TGR suspect that Nintendo may be planning to hold back the supply of the stand alone Wii Remote so that Target shoppers would be tempted to buy all three products. It may seem far-fetched, but Nintendo has already proven over the last two years that they are masters of supply and demand.

Rune Factory Frontier new screenshots

Marvelous Entertainment has released new images of Rune Factory Frontier for the Wii in the latest Famitsu magazine. The title is set to release on November 27 in Japan.

Reggie interview - will Nintendo make new consoles, are consoles dead?

A portion of a Reuters interview with Reggie Fils-Aime…

R: Earlier in the conference there was a healthy panel discussion that contemplated the end of the line for “packaged” video games, and the advent of online gaming. Is that the future?

RFA: What nintendo has seen is a large installed base with strong innovative highly entertaining products sold at the right price. We can sell high volumes of software for very long periods of time. On the DS we have seen that with Brain Age”, “Brain Age 2″, “Mario Kart”, new “Super Mario Bros”. For the Wii console we are seeing that for Wii fit, with Mario Kart. So we believe that there can be this concept of evergreen titles as long as the proposition is right.

R: Given that, one wonders if you ever need to develop a new console. How long does this generation last? Are there any plans to develop a new console soon?

RFA: We believe the role of a new console, a new system, is to bring great new entertainment ideas to life. We launched (the Wii and DS) those systems when we had great ideas that would benefit either from a touch screen or from a Wii remote. We will consider the launch of new consoles when we have got great new entertaining ideas that can only be done with a new console. As we sit here today the Wii console has a long run ahead of it, (the DS too). At some point we will launch the DSi here in the Americas. So as we look at the near term for us its all about maximizing the opportunity with the (Wii and DS).

R: Some suggest there will never be a next generation of consoles, due to the imminent rise of online gaming. Do you buy that idea?

RFA: I don’t buy some of the core propositions. We have seen with our own systems that the consumer wants an experience that today is better delivered via packaged content. There can be add-ons and additional content but the sheer amount of entertainment enjoyment — 50, 60 hours - is pretty difficult to provide through an Internet connection. So I believe that certainly in the near-term the current approach of packaged software with some additional online play that works from a community standpoint and a content creation standpoint is probably the model.

Resident Evil 2 remake may happen

“You know, I think there is the demand for it. It’s certainly something we would like to consider and think about, but, quite frankly our hands are full with Resident Evil 5 right now, and trying to get that out of the door, so we’re going to have to put all of our focus on Resident Evil 5 for the moment.” - Resident Evil 5 producer Jun Takeuchi

Suda serving as ‘executive director’ on No More Heroes: Desperate Struggle, Toshihiro Fujikawa taking the reigns

Suda51 has spoken a bit about his involvement in No More Heroes: Desperate Struggle. This time around, Suda will be in the role of ‘executive director’, while Toshihiro Fujikawa is the main director. Not to worry though…Toshihiro Fujikawa was the assistant director of No More Heroes, and Suda will again write the script for the sequel, just as he did with the original.

Suda also opened up a bit to discuss more of the story in No More Heroes: Desperate Struggle. Nothing major, but a bit of an elaboration on what we’ve heard thus far.

“This time, Travis [Touchdown] is looking for revenge. It’s a serious fight this time, and the word shito reflects that. There’s a series of Japanese movies called Jingi Naki Tatakai that are about the yakuza. They’re really famous in Japan — sort of the equivalent of The Godfather. They focus on the relationships between members of the Yakuza. The subtitle for the second one is Hiroshima Shito Hen. That roughly translates to The Desperate Struggle of Hiroshima. Inspired by that, I wanted No More Heroes 2 to be The Desperate Struggle of Santa Destroy. There’s a really intense fight in Hiroshima Shito Hen, and I wanted to sort of recreate that in No More Heroes 2.”

IGN testet Shaun White Snowboarding: Road Trip (8.4)

.

8.5 Presentation

Shaun White has a slick art style, lots of friendly in-game options, and a few coats of polish.
9.0 Graphics
Kudos go to the developers for not trying to pull off realistic graphics with the less-powerful Wii. This is one of the best-looking games for Nintendo's current console.
8.0 Sound
Good selections from bands like Run DMC, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, and Blue Oyster Cult.
8.0 Gameplay
Not as deep as other boarding games, but it's still a lot of fun and provides a great tactile feeling.
8.0 Lasting Appeal
Cooperative and competitive modes for up to four players should keep you riding for a good while.
8.4 Impressive OVERALL
(out of 10 / not an average)
