Wii Enters Manufacturing?
According to one analyst, Nintendo already has factories running.
by David Adams
July 5, 2006 - In a recent edition of his Game Over column on CNN Money, Chris Morris refers to an analyst note suggesting Nintendo is already manufacturing final retail Wii units -- well ahead of the system's expected launch this fall.
If true, Nintendo could sidestep the troublesome shortages which darkened Microsoft's Xbox 360 launch and which will almost certainly affect Sony's PlayStation 3. Obviously this also suggests Nintendo locked down the Wii hardware earlier than expected -- hopefully giving developers plenty of time with the final system. By contrast, Microsoft sent final X360 development kits to studios surprisingly close to the system's launch.
Nintendo did not immediately return requests for comment.
According to Morris, the same analyst -- P.J. McNealy with American Technology Research -- agrees with others in the industry that October is a likely launch time for the Wii, meaning Nintendo's unconventional and amiably-priced system will be scampering eagerly at stores just as Sony births its latest behemoth.
As for official word, the most Nintendo has said so far is that the Wii will launch this year for less than $250.
