When compiling weekly data for Japan, ioi uses a bevy of sources. By Sunday Night (East Coast USA time), both first day data and preliminary weekly data is available for analysis. Taking both into account, here is an early take on how some of the figures will look this week. These figures are not to be taken as gospel, just an early take on approximately where the market will be for the week.
Software sales are through the roof this week. The preliminary data shows twenty titles with sales above 25,000 units this week and seven titles with sales of 100,000 or greater. The number of software titles on Nintendos platforms in the data has been increasing as well with only five games not on DS or Wii appearing in the preliminary top twenty, as compared to last week, in which seven games not on DS or Wii appeared. Despite the solid debut for Gran Turismo 5 Prologue last week, the title was not in the preliminary top twenty this week. In fact if not for Capcoms unstoppable Monster Hunter Portable 2 on the PSP, only PS2 software would be represented this week - as games not on Nintendo platforms. As always, the breakdown of software sales by platform can be found below.
Wii Software Five Wii titles were in the preliminary top twenty this week. In an unexpected turn, Super Mario Galaxy sales were up dramatically this week, making it the top selling Wii game for the week with sales of 170,000 to 200,000 units. Wii Fit continues to sell well however, selling through an additional 130,000 to 143,000 units. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, absent from the preliminary data for a few weeks, returned with sales of 90,000 to 110,000 units. Additionally, launch title Wii Sports saw sales of 74,000 to 82,000 units this week while Wii Play 65,000 to 73,000 more units this week. Wii hardware sales should be in the 175,000 to 225,000 unit range this week depending on how many units Nintendo has deemed necessary for the West.
PS3 Software There were no PS3 titles in the preliminary top twenty this week. Hardware sales should remain around 45,000 to 60,000 units this week.
Xbox 360 Software There were no Xbox 360 titles in the preliminary top twenty this week. Hardware sales should remain in the 8,000 to 12,000 unit range this week.
PS2 Software There were four PS2 titles in the preliminary top twenty this week two of which are different versions of the same game. Naruto: Shippuuden N-Ultimate Accelerator 2 (PS2) debuted to sales of 60,000 to 75,000 units this week. Powerful Pro Baseball 14 Final Edition debuted to sales of 23,000 to 28,000 units. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Matsuri: Kakera Asobi, and the special edition version of the same game, sold 42,000 to 55,000 units (in combined sales). PS2 hardware should see hardware sales of 22,000 to 32,000 units this week.
PSP Software The only PSP titles in the preliminary top twenty this week was Monster Hunter Portable 2 which sold 34,000 to 40,000 units this week. PSP hardware should remain high, although it will likely drop a bit from last week, to sales of 140,000 to 165,000 units given the lack of software sales this week.
DS Software There were ten DS titles in the preliminary top twenty this week. The re-release of Final Fantasy IV debuted to sales of 325,000 to 385,000 units. Dorabesu DS Doraemon Super Baseball Gaiden sold 200,000 to 222,000 units this week. Despite these huge sales, it was Mario Party DS that appears to have had the biggest sales for the week selling 345,000 to 405,000 units this week, an enormous jump from prior weeks. Dragon Quest IV saw continued strong sales as well moving 109,000 to 129,000 units this week. Professor Layton and Pandoras Box sold an additional 64,000 to 72,000 units. A Tamogotchi DS game sold through 45,000 to 51,000 units, while DS Drum Master Remastered sold 41,000 to 47,000 units. New debut Card Hero sold 43,000 to 50,000 units. Dinosaur King sold 38,000 to 44,000 units. After considerable absence Mario Kart DS also returned selling 35,000 to 40,000 units. DS hardware sales should be in the 275,000 to 325,000 unit range although it will depend on allocations given to Western markets right before Christmas.
