Silent Hill 4: The Room (PS2/Xbox)
Henry Townshend has a problem. He's been trapped in his apartment for a week, with thick steel chains obstructing the front door. When a portal to another realm opens in his bathroom, he decides to investigate -- and is spit out in a spooky town that, judging from the game title, just might be Silent Hill. Yes, the twisted minds at Konami Computer Entertainment Tokyo are preparing another game in the freakiest survival-horror series known to man, and it's a something of a change of pace from the usual.
Instead of focusing completely on supernatural scares or interpersonal drama, Silent Hill 4 starts with a clever and unique basis: the fear of confinement. Think about it. What would you do if you were trapped in your own home, unable to leave, and a tunnel to another dimension opened up? How would you react? This bizarre question is what launches the game's scenario. The developers are striving for a sense of reality ... a twisted, bizarre reality that gets under the player's skin.
In addition to focusing on the psychological once again, the team is striving to improve the game's action mechanics -- to make the game play better. Tension is also a big factor in Silent Hill 4. We've been promised that the game will teach players the fear of being stalked. To keep the game's pace moving, item and weapon use will be moved to a real-time window. The developers are also implementing a first-person view -- but only when you're exploring Henry's apartment. Given how scary and unique the Silent Hill series has been thus far, we have little doubt that this dedicated team will create a masterwork of horror this time around.
Akira Yamaoka
In charge of the Silent Hill project is the multitalented Akira Yamaoka. He's the producer of the games, but that's not all -- he's also the musician behind their extremely memorable soundtracks. Silent Hill 3 included a soundtrack disc, and recently asked if The Room would, he commented, "Even if Konami doesn't want to, I'll do it."
