The PSP's Strong Lineup in 2006
Why It Rocked: While the UMD movie might be a thing of the past, the PSP made up for it in the most important way: with a solid lineup of outstanding games. No less than nine titles scored a 9.0 or higher at IGN, with more than 25 separate titles scored between an 8.0 and an 8.9. This high-end lineup included such games as Metal Gear Solid, Daxter, Syphon Filter, Killzone, Tekken, and many, many more.
So what caused such a boon of excellent titles? Well, part of it could be the fact that developers are beginning to understand the limitations and the advantages of the hardware. Programmers are starting to figure out how best to use the UMD to its fullest, and are cramming tons of stats, features and data onto them. What's more, now that the hardware is out on the market, developers have much more time to work on their ideas and come up with creative titles that work well with the portable format without feeling the pressure of a system launch. Regardless of the reason, PSP owners won with an excellent gaming year.
