Less than two years after the PlayStation TV hit stores, Sony Computer Entertainment is making plans to wind down the PSTV brand, according to a new report from AV Watch. For those unfamiliar with the platform, Sony created the PlayStation TV to make the Vita library –a gold mine for JRPG fans -- more accessible for those uninterested in the handheld device. Unfortunately, compatibility issues, graphical quality and a general lack of interest from European and North American audiences seemed to doom the PlayStation TV from the get-go. Now, Sony is ready to retire its smallest console.
AV Watch says Sony halted all manufacturing of the device, regardless of region, and the company will stop promoting the PlayStation TV brand outside of Japan. It’s not clear how long the device will remain on sale, since SCE likely still has stock to clear; however, Kotaku notes the platform’s Japanese site says the PlayStation TV is no longer being shipped. The device can still be purchased on the English-language PlayStation TV site, along with Amazon and other retailers, but there’s no telling when that will change.
