Many people were taken by surprise when Counterplay Games revealed its PS5-bound co-op, action roleplaying loot-slasher' at The Game Awards in December 2019. After months of speculation following the reveal of PS5's core specs, here was the first confirmed game running on next-gen.
Playing like a blend of ideas from this generation but given a glittering, ray-traced uplift, Godfall is one of those launch titles that feel familiar but new all at once. The developer has referenced Monster Hunter: World in terms of gameplay, and an early demo of the game certainly showcases the kind of weapon-based combat we've come to expect from series such as Capcom's beast-baiter. Weapons are oversized and pointy---we see pikes and chunky warhammers, and a human-sized sword that handily has a scythe in its hilt.
There's more: touches of Dark Souls in how fighters duel and dance, countering and launching weighty strikes. We see one large knight stop the player's attack mid-strike, grabbing them by the throat and pushing them to the ground; Godfall's Al is taking no prisoners. The 75-person studio in California has a vision, and that includes lifting ideas that work. It's no surprise the game has been described as a loot-slasher; with some of the team having worked on Destiny 2 we can expect equally rich co-op hunts as we venture into Godfall's mysterious worlds.
