SONY WON'T CHUCK THE BOOMERANG AWAY
It seems that the PS3's bizarre boomerang controller won't be redesigned for CES
12:53 An un-named Sony executive, speaking to Famitsu, has poured cold water on rumours that the games giant will unveil a redesigned PlayStation 3 controller at January's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. He did, however, admit that by the time it reaches CES, the controller might show "minor changes".
The general consensus states that the boomerang-like PS3 controller's design seems wildly impractical and, when it unveiled the PS3 in May at the E3 Show, Sony was at pains to state that it was merely a concept. Sony enthusiasts are certainly hoping that it will be treated to more than mere tweaks before the PS3's launch.
Controllers have recently proved to be something of a pain in the proverbial for Sony which, in March, was ordered to pay San Jose technology company Immersion $90.7 million in patent infringement damages relating to its PS2 Dual Shock controller. Cannily, Microsoft settled a similar case out of court with Immersion in 2003 for $26 million, at which point it also acquired a 10 per cent stake in Immersion. At least the widely reported threat that Sony would be forced to halt sales of the PlayStation 2 in the US never materialised.
With a putative launch date of Spring 2006, Sony is cutting it fine as far as PlayStation 3 design tweaks are concerned, so it will be interesting to see what emerges at CES, which takes place between 5 and 8 January 2006.
Hazuki schrieb:Rumor: PS3 Riddled With Issues, Delay Likely?
An industry insider who goes by the name Fishie (how very appropriate) says that he got some hands-on time with Playstation 3 games in Japan and wasnt too happy with what he saw.
From his comments:
PS3 Info Before I Head Out Of Japan Friday Towards Noon, Thats Tokyo time. Have fun waiting a while longer boys. No way that thing is coming out in March. The games just arent there and lots of other isseus I cant delve into right now.
Before you start thinking that Fishies post is, um, fishy, he has earned himself a tad more credibility than the typical poster by reporting dead-on facts about the 360 a few weeks before E3. Back then he called the 360 titles underwhelming and said that while there may be some kickass stuff, most people wont be floored.
So, what does this mean for the PS3? Will it be a rocky starty or a delayed launch, or is Fishie just full of crap?

First, we have stated up here before that the earlier versions of the PS3 dev kits were not final specs and we could not produce real-time at the proper frame rate on them for E3.
Second, we have stated that the video was done to specs. Let me explain something about game development. There are very, very few development teams that have the time and manpower to do every single bit of the in-game movies themselves and still get the game done. We outsource all the time. One of the benefits to having standard tools in the industry like LightWave and Maya is that you can exchange actual models, textures, etc with others using the same program. That means you can provide assets and offload the work of putting them all together to someone else.
Third, we stated that this video represents what we believe is achievable on the PS3. I'll dance around my NDA restrictions just a bit to say that I've seen graphics coming together at Guerrilla that support this claim.
Fourth, if you look at the credits for KZ1 - you'll see that we used Axis before. Doesn't it make sense to use a proven vendor when you need to outsource work? Especially when under the gun to complete something for a presentation? One who is able to work with your assets and development pipeline? Just think about it...
Fifth - if I say anymore, I risk getting chewed out by my bosses - so I'm stopping here.

Hmm manche sind jetzt verunsichert. Aber das einzige was man da noch machen kann ist; warten auf die CES oder auf andere Sony Veranstalltungen.
