Capcom talks Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies dev time, DLC, Investigations/series future
A portion of a 4Gamer interview with producer Motohide Eshiro and scenario director Takeshi Yamazaki...
“As a game creator, there’s nothing better than being able to directly see the fans come to pick up the game.” - Eshiro
“I’ve never done an event on launch day before, but whenever a game (I’ve worked on) comes out I go to the shop and watch the sales floor from behind going, ‘Please buy it! Please buy it!’ And I arrange the games on the shelf so they catch the eye better.” - Yamazaki
On the game's release date and long time in development
“Because the platform changed to 3DS this time, there was a lot of time spent on research. Especially with the graphics, how to give them that 2D feel in 3D. And the story is everything in an Ace Attorney game, so Yamazaki had to really knead the scenario into shape. So the production took a long time, but I wanted to make sure the game came out before the summer holidays. 3DS is a portable system, and lots of people take their handheld with them for Obon (a Japanese festival where families gather in their hometown to honour the dead). So I was like, ‘Get ahead of schedule. But don’t compromise the content!’” - Eshiro
On DLC
“Since Dual Destinies is an adventure game, I think there will be lots of people who want to play a little bit more after they clear it. It is new ground for us, but simply creating the content for one new scenario is extremely time-consuming. We started making it as soon as the game was finished, and people will have to wait, but we are now at the tuning stage of production. I can’t give a definite release date yet but I know people will be unhappy if we keep them waiting too long, so I hope to have something out in late summer… Yamazaki has a distant look in his eye.” - Eshiro
- DLC will take up less than 4,648 blocks, but actual size wasn't confirmed
On future entries in the main series and Investigations...
“As the maker of this series we have tried hard to make sure the people who love it will get a game that is well made, and we have kept them waiting for six years. I think it’s a high-quality game. Today we were able to deliver Dual Destinies, and now I’m looking forward to finding out which points the users like and don’t like so that we can roll that into future productions. We hope the fans will continue to support the Ace Attorney series and the Ace Attorney Investigations series into the future.” - Eshiro
