Anime One Piece!

‘One Piece Film: Gold’ Straw Hat Designs Revealed

This week’s issue of the Japanese Weekly Shonen Jump, on sale February 15, gave us a sneak peek at the character design of the Straw Hat crew in the upcoming One Piece Film: Gold.

As you can see from the images, the Straw Hat crew will strangely enough all be covered in leather for the upcoming movie. These character designs, drawn by One Piece creator Eiichirô Oda himself, gives us an idea of how the Straw Hats will look in at least one part of the movie, probably similar to the infamous mafia-looking Straw Hat crew in One Piece Film: Strong World.

Here’s what was previously announced in Weekly Shonen Jump about the movie’s setting:

“The inside of the ship is built like a city and it’s even been acknowledged by the World Government as an independent state.”

The issue of Jump in which this ship was first previewed also mentioned that this “moving country of dreams” boasts a total length of 10 kilometers! The city reminds me personally of a giant casino, what with its green-felted backyard and the roulette wheel shaped walls. The leather suits of the Straw Hats reminds me of the movie Pulp Fiction for some reason. I’m sure Luffy wouldn’t mind a Royal with cheese, that’s for sure!

The issue of Jump also reveals one of the two Seven-Eleven limited edition goods celebrating the movie’s release. When buying a movie ticket for the upcoming movie, you can receive a black and gold set of four limited edition badges for the price of ¥3000 (¥2400 for children). A second limited edition One Piece Film: Gold bundle in the “movie’s image” will be announced at a later date.

One Piece Kabuki Play Previewed in TV Ad

Shueisha Manga Net posted a television commercial for the Kabuki stage play based on Eiichiro Oda's One Piece manga on Wednesday. The commercial features footage from the play's sold-out run in Tokyo last fall, and it promotes the April 2-26 run in Fukuoka's famed Hakata-za theater.

The kabuki stage play's full cast is as follows:

- Ichikawa Ennosuke IV as Luffy, Hancock, Shanks
- Ichikawa Ukon as Whitebeard
- Bandō Minosuke II as Zoro, Bentham, Squard
- Nakamura Hayato as Sanji, Inazuma
- Ichikawa Shunen II as Nami, Sandersonia
- Ichikawa Kōtarō as Hatchan, Sentomaru
- Ichikawa Juen as Avalo Pizarro

The play adapts volumes 51-60 of the manga, a portion of the story known as the "Paramount War Saga." In the story, Luffy attempts to find his brother Ace and save him from execution, while a war erupts between the World Government and the Whitebeard Pirates.

Ichikawa IV said that the creators would "like to approach the script from the eyes of someone who is not familiar with the story, while also not discounting the audience who have already read it. It would best if we could make a story that was fun even for people who haven't read it." He added that "kabuki has never shied away from not showing the beginning and ending of a story and only portraying one side of it. So I think a long story like One Piece is a perfect fit for adaptation to the stage."

The play ran from October 7 to November 25 at the Shinbashi Enbujō in Ginza, Tokyo. 100,000 tickets for the Tokyo run all sold out. Yujin Kitagawa, member of musical group YUZU, performed the Kabuki play's theme song.

The play is one play in the Super Kabuki-gi II set of plays featuring Ichikawa IV as the lead.
