Yes, the technology behind the ON is real and will be used as an add-on for the Rev and no it dosent put every game into first-person just a complete virtual reality version of the original. Yes, Xenias is real don't believe what those stupid high school kids say. Bungie may be developing for Rev. nothing is set in stone though but Bioware will be developing for Rev. And they should be dedicating the Unreal Engine 3 into the dev. tool. We'll be in touch.

If you can't read a long post, skip this and reply with an indifferent or entirely negative, cynical or skeptic response about Nintendo and their upcoming console.
Before you have any preconcieved notions about this topic, fall back on Re4 for Gamecube.
Take note that the patent for cube mapping happened around the time this game was in development and released.
Also take note of how Gamecube was deemed to be not as powerful than Xbox but more powerful than PS2.
Now take note of how all editorial reviews of the game stated that RE4 had the best graphics among all three consoles, PC not included.
How is it that RE4 achieved greater graphic detail than even that of the much coveted Halo 2?
RE4 is a basic example of what Cube Mapping can do, except when RE4 was developed, Cube Mapping was only used in a BARE BARE minimum, mainly because it was still a new-found technique. a little Cube Mapping was used to create the backgrounds, water and environments.
Anyone Remember Nintendo claiming that they've found a new way to render polygons in a way that the framerate wouldn't suffer?
Anyone remember the interview with one of the PR's at nintendo, in where Perrin Kaplin says they've been experimenting and improving a new technique that involved graphics since RE4's release?
They achieved the best graphics on a console that wasn't as strong as X-box, now think of this concept as a theoretical comparison for the Revolutions capabilities, except Cube Mapping being used to its full extent with all its intricate ramifications exploited. They would use cube mapping on everything, the environment, environmental objects, the ground skies walls even all the characters...
What's more, if Cube mapping isn't such a big deal, why would Nintendo patent it to prevent other companies from using the technique without their permission?
Revolution will be the first console to attain EXACT Full Motion Video fluidity and detail in real-time, all without needing a powerful juggernaut of a processor, ala Cell Technology.
Remember Nintendo stating recently, "When Microsoft and Sony see what we've done, they'll be screaming..." i bet that's because sony and microsoft will have invested so much money into costly machines, only to have Nintendo OWN a graphic technique that achieves the same, if not exceedingly more graphic level than their own consoles, and at a much cheaper price.
The patent regrding cube mapping is the most interesting one I've read. It describes a home console system (refered to in the document as 'System 50') which has:
1. Upgradable flash memory.
2. Games that can be played of disk or downloaded off a network.
3. An IBM processor.
4. Wireless capabilites.
These are all known aspects of the Revolution. I think it is relatively safe to assume this document refers to the Revolution.
To try to get around the techy side of the document basically the graphics technology enables the system to:
1. Use prerendered graphics to create a fully interactive and dynamic 3d world previously only possible with real-time graphics.
2. As graphics are pre-rendered they can be built on high end work stations using tecniques such as ray tracing or even using actual photographs to create photrealistic worlds.
3. Real time processing (i.e. polygons) is used to create in game objects such as the player character, enemies etc
4. The real time and prerendered graphics are then composited to create the final display the player sees.
5. As less real time processing occurs the system needn't be as powerful when it comes to number crunching so can be made and sold for less money. (It also follows that theoretically the system could be quite small).
So how does this fit in with what we know about the Revolution at the moment.
1. The system will cost less on launch then its competitors, and much smaller.
2. It will have less processing power, as it doesn't require it using this technique.
3. It will use a very high capacity disk format which hasn't been announced yet. This would be necessary for storing large amounts of prerendered image data.
4. and most importantly I think, the names of the chips which according to Nintendo will combine to give the Revolution its impressive visuals are 'Broadway' and 'Hollywood'.
Broadway, as has been said by Nintendo is the home of live entertainment. In this case - real time.
Hollywood, the home of recorded entertainment. In this case - pre-rendered.
The names are entirely appropriate for the technique described in the patent. Which could mean the Revolution's graphics may extremely impressive indeed, especially as the patent document itself mentions techniques such photographs being combined with depth maps, and raytracing. No technology exists that could do such a thing in real time, especially games console wise. Revolution cheats though to make it look like it is, which is all you need to do really!

Von Bungie kam noch nichts Vernünftiges... Wozu also?
