Hey Matt great site. I visit every day. My question is regarding what you think Nintendo will use for it's Revolution medium. Will it use Blu-Ray or HD-DVD? Judging from the past, one of them is surely destined to end up like the beta and the other to be hugely successful like VHS. I doubt they can both succeed. I personally feel that BLU-Ray may be the best choice. What are the advantages and disadvantages to both, and which would the big N benefit from more? Please let me know what you think. Thanks,
Solid Snake Jake
Matt responds: The quick answer is that I don't know. But since I get paid like a million dollars a year to write this column (note: not actually true), and answer your questions, I'll speculate. I think that Revolution will use a standard DVD-drive. I believe this because Nintendo has always skimped on the storage medium. Always. It stuck with cartridges in the face of CDs and then it went and developed a smaller capacity proprietary disc in the face of DVDs. I think it will shun Blu-Ray and HD-DVD for the very same reason.
On top of that, word on the street is that Microsoft is going to stick with standard DVD technology with the successor to Xbox. Not Blu-Ray. And not HD-DVD, as some had suspected. The rumor is that NEC and Co. pitched Microsoft on the idea of using HD-DVD in Xbox 2, but couldn't deliver the drives at a cost anywhere close to what the Seattle-based giant needed to make this new console happen in the price-friendly range. If true, this is sure to give Nintendo yet another reason not to bother with either next-gen disc format. And if that happens, PlayStation 3 would likely arrive as the only console capable of playing high-definition movies out of the box.
I talked with some developers working on Xbox 2 about this situation.
"So, do you think this means that Sony's PS3 is going to ride the success of Blu-Ray in the same way that PS2 initially rode the success of DVD?" I asked.
"I honestly don't know," one said. "Right now, I'm not sure that Blu-Ray will matter. But then again, I thought the same thing about DVD this generation and look what happened to Nintendo."
As a tech-whore/video/audiophile, I am anticipating the arrival of Blu-Ray and HD-DVD as though both of them together could reveal all the secrets of the universe. But then I'm part of a small and undeniably pathetic group of early adopters, many of whom have yet to kiss a girl, that write e-mails about artifacting problems in the Battlestar Galactica miniseries DVD and eagerly await the next software download for their HD TiVo units.

Als bekann gegeben wurde, daß RE 4 auch für die PS2 kommen wird, habe ich in verschiedenen Foren die schärften Dinger gelesen. Selbstmordgedanken, Mordgedanken, Aufgabe des Hobbys usw.
