Here's the original interview with the screenshots and details of Saren (main evil guy)
http://xbox360.gamespy.com/xbox-360/.../768658p1.html
GameSpy: When we released the first details on Mass Effect's Saren last month, we didn't know what to expect. Could you shed some light on the current universal climate, politically, militarily, or socially, and the player's role in the game's universe and their importance to the storyline?
Drew Karpyshyn, Mass Effect Principle Writer: The current universal climate, at least from the perspective of the human race, is one of caution and skepticism. Humanity is quite new to the galactic stage, and the various races of the Citadel (the central seat of civilization in the universe) are watching us to see what we do in these early stages of our emergence. Early in the game, the player is put into the position of being the only Human Spectre - as such, he is both an elite agent that operates outside the law to maintain peace, and the star representative of mankind in the eyes of other races and species.
GameSpy: Members of Saren's race are known as Turians. Could you describe the Turian homeworld and compare its history, climate, and populace to that of the other planets in Citadel space?
Drew Karpyshyn: Turians hail from the planet Palaven. Palaven is largely Earth-like in nature, being what is known as a Garden Planet. Lush greenery and oceans are the primary geographic features to be found there, and the planet is ideal for supporting life. Turians are a tough, raptor-like humanoid species. The turians are one of the three races with a seat on the Citadel Council. Their autocratic society values discipline, but is tempered by a strong personal and collective sense of honor. Turians fill the role of peacekeepers for the Council, using their large military to preserve peace and order in the face of piracy and external threats.
GameSpy: Can you tell us more about Spectre? Saren is the youngest Turian Spectre, and Commander Shepard is the first human admitted. What is the significance of this, and is there a previous relationship between the characters?
Drew Karpyshyn: Known throughout the galaxy, the Spectres are elite military operatives comprising select individuals from all the civilized races. Spectres have freedoms and jurisdictions far exceeding those of normal citizens, giving them access to areas and information that is normally restricted. Spectres have the authority and ability to deal with enemies who threaten the stability of the galactic community and often operate outside the bounds of galactic law, using whatever means necessary to preserve order.
The history of Saren's involvement with the Spectre organization, and his relationship with other Spectre agents, is expanded upon in the prequel novel "Mass Effect: Revelation" which will be released later this year.
GameSpy: From the first images we saw of Saren, it appears he wears a suit of armor very similar to that we have seen on screenshots featuring Shepard. We presume this is a Spectre uniform, but we'd also like to be reassured that there will be armor customization that will affect appearance. Can you elaborate on weapon and armor customization and their effect on character models?
Drew Karpyshyn: The armor in Mass Effect comes in light, medium and heavy variants, and encompasses a large variety of visual styles and effects, damage mitigation, environmental protection and other variables directly impacting the player's effectiveness and survivability. Armor can also be customized further via modifications found during the course of the game. The exact same thing can be said for the weapons used in "Mass Effect." Different weapon makes and various upgrade modifications will affect the look of weapons as well as the visual effect of using them.
GameSpy: While Saren has been revealed as a pivotal character in the game and a major villain, the overarching threat in the game has been previously revealed as a race of machine beings that pillage the galaxy once every fifty-thousand years. Could you tell us more about them and what makes them different from, say, "Star Trek's" Borg?
Drew Karpyshyn: Actually that's an element of the story we'd like players to discover more about throughout the course of playing the game.
GameSpy: Humans are relatively new to space travel and the Alliance and they've gained the animosity of Saren. Could you perhaps give us a brief timeline on their rise from interstellar obscurity to their current place of prominence in universal affairs? Why does he hate the humans?
Drew Karpyshyn: Saren's relationship to humanity, and the early years of humans on the Citadel are detailed in Revelation, the Mass Effect novel mentioned previously.
As for humanity's rise to prominence - it traces back to 2148 AD when we discovered a small cache of highly advanced alien technology hidden deep beneath the surface of Mars. Building on the remnants of this long extinct race - known as the Protheans - we quickly mastered the science of mass effect fields, leading to the development of faster than light travel.
Almost a decade later, in 2157 AD, humanity made first contact with another space-faring culture: the turians. Unfortunately, the encounter was far from peaceful. Over the next several months a brief but tense conflict known on Earth as the First Contact war ensued.
This conflict drew the attention of the Citadel Council - a multi-species government body that maintains peace and stability throughout the known galaxy. The Council intervened before hostilities could escalate further, revealing the existence of the greater galactic community to humanity and brokering a peace between them and the turians.
Humanity continued to expand, founding more colonies and establishing trade alliances with many of the other species who recognize the authority of the Citadel Council. In 2165 the Council made official recognition of humanity's growing power and influence in the galactic community. Humanity was granted an embassy on the Citadel, the political and economic heart of the galaxy.
