After Terra Soft Solutions introduced Yellow Dog Linux (YDL) in version 5 running on the PS3 PPCNUX took the chance and interviewed one of the first users who run Linux on the PS3, Kai Staats.
We are proud to get some first glimpse on Linux with the PS3 that answers some interesting questions.
PPCNUX: How well does your linux distribution get along with the installed and available RAM of 256MB?
Kai: It works very well in this space.
PPCNUX: And is it expandable?
Kai: Not with Cell, no.
PPCNUX: How is the performance of the installed hard drive?
Kai: Have not had a chance to test throughput, but it seems to work well
PPCNUX: Will there be partitions or just one for all? How big will the Linux partition grow without taking an impact on the gaming experience?
Kai: From the GameOS you can create a partition for Linux (minority or majority). The GameOS and Linux are unique in their space and functions. They do not overlap nor hinder each other.
PPCNUX: Is the hard drive changeable?
Kai: We have not tried to change the drive and I do not know if the GameOS enables you to reformat and rebuild a drive.
PPCNUX: Will it start swapping when all default apps are open, like Firefox,Thunderbird, OpenOffice, GIMP, Inkscape, a photo viewer, amaroK, vlc?
Kai: Linux is very capable of handling a large number of apps, as you are aware. But if you do in fact open and use (not just have them open) enough apps that your RAM is consumed, it may swap. I have not experienced this to date.
PPCNUX: Is the RAM situation the reason why you choose E17 over KDE or GNOME?
Total Blöde das der Speicher nicht erweiterbar ist.
Hoffe die Können das so hinmodden das man auf den Speicher des Grafikchips zurückgreifen kann.
