Swapping Data With Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai DX

Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai DX is a pretty niche game. I mean, a music title starring Vocaloids? Every 3DS owner isn’t going to be rushing out to grab that. It may make you wonder if turning on the StreetPass and SpotPass functions are worth it. Well, I’m here to confirm that yes, yes you should.

I turned StreetPass and SpotPass on for Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai DX because it’s something I always do for new games. Even if it’s too early to conceivably or conveniently pass someone, I do it anyway. It’s a reflex. I did so and expected nothing to happen.

Then, two days later, I received a profile card over SpotPass. Because someone else on my friend’s list was also playing and had turned on the features, we had automatically swapped cards. His Vocaloid stopped by with a box bearing Mirai Points for me, and the custom jingle he created played upon Luka’s arrival.

When I visit his card in my list, I’m able to listen to his jingle at any time, see Luka in a custom pose and outfit, and watch a dance he created for "Electric Love." In fact, watching his dance even granted me two dance cards I didn’t have, which granted access to additional flourishes I could use in my own performance.

Despite never having actually StreetPassed each other since acquiring Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai DX, we were able to communicate, in a way. If alterations are made to cards, they’ll be updated the next time SpotPass data is exchanged with someone on your 3DS friend list. You can save and protect their card, so it isn’t deleted or replaced. You can also save their jingle or dance routine to your card, if you really enjoyed it. However, the dance routine will be your active character performing it, and not the one on their profile card.

It’s even possible to discern how other people are doing, based on the titles they’ve acquired and costumes their Vocaloids are wearing in the profile card. You can’t use “Puyo Poppist” in your Tagline unless you’ve played Puyo Puyo 39, for example. Some outfits are tied to songs, so you’ll know what songs someone has played depending on what clothes their characters are wearing.

Here’s How You Dance in Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai DX

There’s always some customization element in Sega’s Hatsune Miku games. I’m not talking about the costume modules either. Rather, there’s some way to put a unique spin on either the in-game songs or your own music with some sort of creation tool. With the Project Diva line, you can make your own music videos and songs with MP3s. Project Mirai DX turns you into a choreographer.

You get to make your own dances in the Dance Studio in Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai DX’s town. There you can create and view dances. Create is the best place to start, and all of the songs you’ve unlocked appear there. As an aside – you have to unlock the additional vocal options for songs before they’ll appear as well. So if you’ve unlocked “Animal Fortune-telling,” you’ll also have to have earned the Rin, Luka, and Meiko versions before you can make dances for them. Likewise, each song has specific p. video and finish moves for it, which only become available after you unlock them.

Once you choose a song, you’ll have two creation options to go with, Simple and Advanced. The Simple option lets you press up, left, right, and down on the directional pad, with the directions respectively corresponding to active, cute, kool, and p. video dance moves. The X button adds a finishing move, and the Y puts a basic move in. Pressing the buttons assigned to moves will add a random move from that category in place in the dance. Pressing it again will change to a different random move. If you like what you’ve done, you can press the A button to repeat. The B button will cancel it. You add in moves while the song plays in the background.

The Advanced option is much more complex. With this option, all of the possible dance moves are assigned to specific categories on the touch screen, with little trading cards appearing for each one and the Y button offering a preview of the move. The song isn’t immediately playing, and you can place dance moves in all blocks for the song by tapping the left and right shoulder buttons. Pressing the B button brings up a menu that lets you rehearse from certain points or the start of the song. This method can take much longer, but allows for more precision and the ability to see every move. Unfortunately, in both cases, you can only have one Vocaloid dancing in a custom routine.

You can save up to five dances you’ve created and up to five from people you’ve StreetPassed or SpotPassed in Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai DX, for a grand total of 10. Only one dance you’ve created can be shared on your Profile Card with people you meet over StreetPass or SpotPass. If you’re watching a dance either you or someone else created, you’ll see the active Vocaloid performing it, and be able to take pictures of the performance and choose from five camera angles or an “auto” camera option.

Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai DX is coming to the Nintendo 3DS on September 8.

How To Open Up Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai DX Songs For Every Vocaloid

Here’s what’s special about Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai DX. Instead of being locked into one vocal track for a song, some allow you to change the performer. It not only alters the character showing up in the video, but they will really sing the song. The thing is, this option isn’t available immediately.

No, if you want the option to enjoy multiple character’s vocal renditions of certain songs, you have to earn it. Playing through songs that offer this option on one difficulty once does nothing. You have to tackle and complete it at multiple levels and with various control schemes to unlock each one, sometimes tackling a song up to six times to open up every option.

Let’s use “Animal Fortune-telling” as an example. Miku, Rin, Luka, and Meiko are vocal options for this song. Miku is available at the start. If you wanted the other three, you could play and beat it on Easy, Normal, and Hard on Button mode and Easy on Tap mode.

Not every song in Hatsune Miku: Project Diva DX offers this option. Here’s a list of the ones that have different performers you can unlock, followed by the potential singers. The first singer (or singers) listed is the default performer.

- “Animal Fortune-telling” – Miku, Rin, Luka, and Meiko
- “Terekakushi Shishunki” – Len and Kaito
- “reverse rainbow” – Miku and Rin, Rin and Len, and Miku and Luka
- “Sing & Smile” – Miku, Rin, Len, Luka, Kaito, and Meiko
- “Mousou Sketch” – Miku and Rin
- “1925” – Miku, Rin, Len, Luka, Kaito, and Meiko
- “Romeo and Cinderella” – Miku, Rin, and Luka
- “Snowman” – Kaito and Len
- “Electric Angel” – Miku, Rin, and Luka
- “Interviewer” – Miku and Luka
- “Tricolore Airline” – Miku, Rin, Luka, and Meiko
- “PianoxFortexScandal” – Meiko, Miku, Rin, and Luka
- “Watashi no Jikan” – Miku, Rin, and Len

Make sure you replay all of those songs if you want to hear every version.
