Ghost in the Shell's Kamiyama to Launch Eden of the East Anime (Update)

Honey and Clover's Chika Umino to design original characters for April debut

This year's 23rd issue of Hakusensha's Young Animal magazine will announce on Friday that Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and Moribito - Guardian of the Spirit director Kenji Kamiyama is creating and directing an anime called East of the Eden (Higashi no Eden) for a television premiere in April 2009. Chika Umino, the creator of Honey and Clover and Young Animal's ongoing March comes in like a lion manga, is creating the original character designs for the anime. The anime will premiere in Fuji TV's late-night Noitamina timeslot. The Nodame Cantabile: Paris romantic comedy sequel is currently enjoying high ratings in the timeslot, and Osamu Dezaki's Genji Monogatari Sennenki Genji (The Tale of Genji: A Millennium-Old Journal: Genji) adaptation of a classic Japanese novel will take over the timeslot in January.

Einer meiner Most wanted^^

Utawarerumono Gets Ero-OVA

Excellent eroge adapted anime うたわれるもの / Utawarerumono is set to get a three volume OVA to be released in the spring of 2009, and it is said to include significant ero-upgrades, as well as some reworking of the series.

The speculative date given for the release of the first volume is June 5th, 2009; a DVD special edition and a Blu-ray edition will retail for some ¥8,000, with a normal version going for ¥6,300.

Some reworking of character design and scenario details is apparently in the works, but most interestingly we hear: “Unlike the TV anime it won’t be covering things up with steam or avoiding interesting angles; it’ll be a more mature work.”

Given the conclusion the original drew to, it seems a side-story is the shape the OVA will take, though details are sparese at present.

There was some disturbing talk of a PSP UMD only release for all or part of the title, but this thankfully seems to have been scotched.

Utawarerumono fans are sure to be eagerly anticipating this, especially with something of a return to its eroge roots, a pattern we saw also with Koihime Musou. Let us hope nothing goes awry.

Die OVAs werden also ero, huh? Also Ecchi und mehr? Hm, ich weiß nicht, ob das jetzt ein GRund ist, sich mehr oder sich weniger drauf zu freuen.

NisiOisin's Katanagatari Light Novels to Be Animated

Medieval sword drama from Bakemonogatari, Death Note: Another Note novelist

The online stores Honya Town and Rakuten Books have posted the cover of NisiOisin's Maniwagatari novel, which announces that an animated version of NisiOisin's earlier Katanagatari light novel series has been green-lit. The 12-volume historical epic centers on Shichika Yasuri, the seventh generational head of the Kyotō-ryū school of martial arts in medieval Japan. He and his older sister Nanami live on an isolated island, until a military advisor named Togame tells him of the final 12 swords forged by a legendary swordsmith. At Togame's bidding, Shichika embarks on a journey to find all 12 of the swords.

The illustrator Take draws the artwork in the novels. Kodansha published 12 volumes in the novel series — one for every month of 2007. Maniwagatari is a spinoff from Katanagatari, and it focuses on a side character named Maniwa-ningun. NisiOisin's Bakemonogatari supernatural comedy light novels are also being animated. NisiOisin is known outside Japan for his Death Note: Another Note novel spinoff and xxxHOLiC: Another xxxHOLiC spinoff short-story collection.

Ghibli to Start Two Features Over Next Three Years

Room established at studio for development of next film for "20XX" release

Award-winning director Hayao Miyazaki (Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Spirited Away, Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea) gave a speech to his Studio Ghibli production staff in which he announced that they will start two feature-length works over the next three years. The studio's "Itsumo no Ghibli Nikki" ("The Habitual Ghibli Diary") describes the speech in a November 27 entry. According to the diary, the speech discussed how the studio will weather the increasingly grim conditions the world is facing. Miyazaki reportedly emphasized that the two new feature-length works will have young staffers at their core. The diary also posted a blurred image (shown at right) of the diagram for the next three years that Miyazaki presented, but captioned it, "The details are still secret."

In a November 17 entry, the diary revealed that the preparation room for Ghibli's next film has been set up on the third floor of Ghibli's studio #1. The room's poster (pictured at left) says, "Preparation Room: Maro & Nayo: 20XX Opening." The poster's date has been deliberately blurred in the picture in the diary's entry, and the picture's caption says, "The opening date is a secret." Nayo is the nickname of a staffer at Ghibli who working with studio co-founder Isao Takahata (Grave of the Fireflies, Only Yesterday, Pom Poko) on development for Ghibli's next film.

Studio Ghibli President Koji Hoshino revealed last February that "directors Takahata and Goro Miyazaki are both developing works" for release after Miyazaki's Gake no Ue no Ponyo (Ponyo on a Cliff) opens this summer. Goro Miyazaki, Hayao Miyazaki's son, served as the Ghibli Museum's first curator and directed Tales from Earthsea.

New Fullmetal Alchemist TV Anime to Premiere in April

Website launched for new anime based on Hiromu Arakawa's manga

The official website for the new Fullmetal Alchemist television anime series has launched with a short teaser video, and it has confirmed that the television series will launch in Japan in April. It also promised that new information will be provided in the January issue of Square Enix's Monthly Shonen Gangan magazine (where Hiromu Arakawa's original manga is still serialized) on December 12. The same issue will also include a poster with a key visual image.

The new Fullmetal Alchemist teaser trailer ran at the end of the episode of Mobile Suit Gundam 00 Second Season that aired in Japan on Sunday. The trailer says, "New training … a fullmetal artificial limb, a body of armor … the brothers' journey begins. Fullmetal Alchemist: April 2009 Training. In this palm, is there hope or despair?"

The new television anime series was confirmed on the wraparound jacket band of the 20th volume of Hiromu Arakawa's Fullmetal Alchemist manga in August. However, a document with leaked information about animators who worked at BONES had already mentioned the possibility of "Hagane 2" ("Iron/Fullmetal 2") in July. Viz Media published the 17th volume of the manga version in North America this October, while FUNimation Entertainment released both the first television series and its theatrical movie finale.

Gonzo Plans Ero-Anime to Avert Bankruptcy?

An animator with insider knowledge reports that troubled anime studio Gonzo is considering turning to ero-anime (as in hentai, rather than merely ecchi) to rescue itself, with sacking a quarter of its staff and reducing anime output by half apparently not sufficient to restore it to profitability.

The animator revealed the plan on his Mixi diary, apparently based on his conversation with a Gonzo employee:

Apparently, there are even problems paying employees? We also hear:

“If it’s Gonzo doing an ero-anime then the quality could be pretty good, right?”

“Only the worst, most useless staff are left…”

So a Gonzo produced H-anime may not be as great as one might hope.

It must be noted that this is otherwise unconfirmed, and so should be taken sceptically.

Observers point out that ero-anime titles such as eroge-adapted “Sora no Iro, Mizuiro”, with two OVA volumes, look to have strong sales, with those titles looking to manage some 20,000 in total.

In comparison, Gonzo has only two titles to have broken through the critical 10,000 copies sold milestone, those being Vandread and Strike Witches. Thus Gonzo might be lured into creating adult titles, which is considered something of a last resort in the industry.

Their other titles have managed only moderate sales of 5,000-7,500, and some have done much worse.

Below you can see the rather unimpressive sales data for Gonzo’s top sellers, showing week 1 sales for various first volume DVD releases (first number is the rank at the time, followed by first week sales and weekly period sales, with the number of weeks after):

Grandmother left a book full of names, of which the owner has control over. Boy returns names, makes new friends both real and supernatural. While the stories are generally
very simple, the presentation is beautiful and serene. It's not a love story, but the girl with glasses is pretty damn cute. Was ranked #1 during Summer '08 on Dengeki as
one of the best anime to watch that season. This is one I'm personally looking forward to, tremendously. It's an interesting take on the concept of lonliness and I'm sure a lot
of people can find something they can relate to throughout the series.
