Sony ex-boss: CPU delayed PS3
13:30, Oct 10th by Tim Ingham
Sony’s former chief has blamed the belated worldwide release of PlayStation 3 on the console’s processor.
According to the BBC, Nobuyuki Idei said that lengthy development of PS3’s CPU, which was co-created with IBM, meant the console's US and Japan releases would come almost a year later than Microsoft’s launch of Xbox 360.
However, he also used the opportunity to have a dig at Sony’s major gaming rival, stating Xbox 360 didn’t suffer a similar fate because it was based on existing components.
“Microsoft is not a technology company,” said Idei, who ran Sony from 1995 to 2005.
The PS3 is released in Japan on November 11th and the US on November 17th. The European release will follow in March next year.
