Microsoft will launch an updated HD DVD drive for the Xbox 360 in 2008, it said at its 25th hardware anniversary in London today.

Mark Bennett, Microsoft's European business development director for HD DVD, demonstrated the technology's advanced interactive features and pointed out that Paramount, Universal Studios and many Warner Brothers high definition titles are exclusive to HD DVD.

"The interactive features actually work on HD DVD whereas Blu-ray titles are six to nine months away from getting features that actually work," Bennett said, referring to Blu-ray's current inability to do picture in picture videos.

Bennett also said "there are more plans to incorporate HD DVD into the PC platform in the future."

The original Xbox360 HD DVD drive, which launched in November 2006, was fully compatible with Windows PCs and proved a hit for being the cheapest high definition drive on sale.

The event, which was celebrating Microsoft's 25th anniversary of making computer hardware, saw the software giant revive its PC gaming peripherals with a new sidewinder mouse and new ergonomic keyboards and mice.

There were also multi-coloured Xbox360 controllers and it said it would sell high definition download movie rentals over its Live service before Christmas in the UK – one of the first such services to hit these isles. Pricing hasn't been announced yet, but it demonstrated a 720p movie measuring 4GB costing 480 credits, which equates to about £4.

Mark Bennett, Microsofts European Business Development Director für HD-DVD, gab anlässlich des 25 jährigen Hardware-Jubiläums in London bekannt, dass man 2008 ein überarbeitetes HD-DVD Laufwerk für die Xbox360 anbieten wird. Was oder ob sich etwas ändert ist nicht bekannt.

Neben einer Präsentation der HD-DVD Features, die das Blu-ray Format derzeit noch nicht bietet, teilt dieser ebenfalls mit, dass man das HD-DVD Format noch enger mit dem PC in Zukunft verknüpfen will.

Für mich bluray. Breiterer Support der Firmen ohne Geldzuschuss imo und wichtiger Schritt Games auf solchen Formaten rauszubringen. Will keine zwei Player im Regal.

naja ich bin für BD weil ich ne ps3 habe...

gewinnen wird keines der beiden formate also wird früher oder später alles auf BD und HD-DVD erscheinen bis auf die sony eigenen sachen....

darum fahr ich imo mit BD am besten!

und daran das sich die beiden HD medien auf dem massenmarkt durchsetzen ist vor 2010 sowieso nicht zu denken!

Final Fanasty VII: Advent Children für Blu-Ray

Square's big budget fan service film, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, is heading to Blu-ray and it's going to provide much more than an HD transfer. A new trailer showcased at TGS shows a few new scenes that expand upon the film's storyline. One scene took place in the alleys of Midgar as children afflicted with Geostigma appear to be melting goo. Another sequence shows Sephiroth stabbing Cloud through the chest, skewering him and swinging him like a piece of dead meat. Not only will the updated Blu-ray disc feature new scenes, but new special features that were cut from the original DVD will find their way into the collection, thanks to the spacious capacity of the HD movie format.

But that's not what has us most excited. The fight scenes from the film have been completely re-rendered with a feature we've long waited for: dirt. The always-fashionable Cloud and company will have perfect clothes no more! They'll have to invest in even stronger hair gel to survive the battles that they face. The press release explains it best: "Clothing that gradually dirties through intense combat, faces that darken with soot from explosions, and motorbikes pockmarked with gunshots - the Complete edition brings a grittier, dirtier look to the film's nonstop action."

The now-Incomplete edition will now be too clean for the Square Enix hardcore. The added sheen of the HD transfer will only accentuate the dirty details that Square has deemed necessary to include in this re-release. Of course, we can't wait for the next 2160p "Really Complete Edition" which will add even more wrinkles to the character's clothes and subtle acne on their backs.

Naja, die da drüben haben das ja auch schon seit Jahren und müssen es deswegen gar nicht verstehen Frag mal die Haushalte in Deutschland was PAL oder SD ist.

Ich glaub du hast dich selbst geowned!
Schon mal dran gedacht das sowas illegal ist, da die HD-DVD kopiergeschütz ist.
Und laut Gesetzt ist das umgehen von Kopierschutz illegal.

Ausserdem schau dir mal an wie aufwendig es ist so eine Kopie zu machen. Wenn du das für einen Film machst ist das ja noch ok, aber mach das mal bei 10 Filmen.
