Is the dismal holiday performance of Sony's (SNE) PS3 and blowout sales of Nintendo's (NTDOY) Wii indicative of how the two consoles will do over the next year? Cowen and Company's Doug Creutz thinks so, lowering his future estimates of PS3 sales and boosting his Wii predictions.
Doug's revised estimates:
Sony will sell about 4 million PS3s in 2009, down from previous projections of 6.25 million units sold. Fewer PS3 sales in 2010 too, now projecting 4.5 million units sold vs 6.5 million previously. Wii picks up the slack: 8 million consoles to be sold in 2009 vs 6 million previous. More in 2010 too: 6 million vs old estimates of 4 million.
Little change to Microsoft's Xbox 360: Estimates fairly steady, Doug sees 4.25 million this year, and another 4 million in 2010.
The interesting thing is Doug sees total console sales fairly flat -- it's just Nintendo is grabbing more customers that otherwise would have been Sony's.
So much for the idea that the Xbox and PS3 aren't in competition with Nintendo.

Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter has told CVG that Sony "is a distant third" this generation "and is falling behind at a rapid pace".
Speaking to us after Sony forecast major losses for the fiscal year ending in March, Pachter suggested a PS3 price cut "in all geographies" was needed to give the ailing PlayStation division a boost.
However, he noted that Sony may not be willing to lower hardware prices until it can further reduce PS3 production costs, therefore reducing the loss it is currently making on every unit sold.
"The most important thing for the company to do is to get the PS3 production cost down, and it appears to be making progress on that front," said the analyst.
"Sony has historically priced at its production cost (or above), but it has historically been in first place. This generation, the company is a distant third, and is falling behind at a rapid pace.
"Keeping the PS3 price high kills Sony, and gives Microsoft a huge competitive advantage. In my view, every Xbox 360 sold is a lost opportunity for Sony to sell a PS3, and Microsoft has no intention of taking a sabbatical.
"Lowering the price will cost Sony a lot, but it should generate sufficient future profits from game and Blu-ray movie sales and royalties to offset those losses."
With Sony adamant that it has no intention of beginning the new business year with a PS3 price drop as rumoured, Pachter assigned just a five percent probability to an April cut, a 20 percent probability to one at E3, a 25 percent probability to one at the Tokyo Game Show and a 40 percent probability to holiday 2009.
"That leaves a ten percent chance that Sony won't cut price in 2009 at all, which I think would be a mistake," he added.
