Preliminary Japanese Sales for the Week Ending December 2, 2007
When compiling weekly data for Japan, ioi uses a bevy of sources. By Sunday Night (East Coast USA time), both first day data and preliminary weekly data is available for analysis. Taking both into account, here is an early take on how some of the figures will look this week. These figures are not to be taken as gospel, just an early take on approximately where the market will be for the week. Software sales for this week remain high as Japan moves toward its late December, early January peak industry sales. While many expected Wii Fit to be the top seller for the week, it was the new Layton game for DS that sold the most units. Also of note - there were quite a few titles this week across Wii, DS and PSP which saw increased sales from the previous week. The new 'trend' of Xbox 360 software charting for one to three weeks has continued as well. As always, the breakdown of software in the preliminary top twenty can be found below.
Wii Software Three Wii titles were in the preliminary top twenty this week. As expected, Wii Fit was the top selling game of the week debuting to sales of 180,000 to 200,000 units. In line with the saying all ships rise with the tide Super Mario Galaxy sales increased from last week to 23,000 to 28,000 units this week. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games sold 28,000 to 36,000 this week although it is possible that the game was underestimated in the preliminary data like it was last week. Wii hardware this week should see a sales boost to 65,000 to 80,000 units this week on the seasonal sales boost and the release of Wii Fit.
PS3 Software Two PS3 titles were in the preliminary top twenty this week. The top selling title this week is Winning Eleven 2008 which sold 18,000 to 22,000 units this week. Dynasty Warriors 6 moved another 12,000 to 15,000 units this week. PS3 hardware sales should remain flat at about 50,000 to 60,000 units - in comparison to last week, as the natural decline in sales from the lack of big new software this week is offset by holiday seasonal boosts.
Xbox 360 Software The only Xbox 360 titles in the preliminary top twenty this week was Assassins Creed which sold 30,000 to 34,000 units. Xbox 360 hardware sales should remain in the 5,000 to 8,000 range for this week.
PS2 Software Five PS2 titles were in the preliminary top twenty this week. SD Gundam G Generation Spirits debuted to sales of 205,000 to 245,000 units. Sengoku Basara Heroes 2 debuted to sales of 90,000 to 120,000 units. Winning Eleven 2008 sold through another 35,000 to 45,000 units this week. The Panchiko title released last week with the awful name sold an additional 13,000 to 16,000 units. Lastly, Zero no Tsukaima: Muma ga Tsumugu Yokaze no Nocturne sold 11,000 to 14,000 units in its debut. PS2 hardware sales should see a slight boost this week to 14,000 to 18,000 units.
PSP Software - Two PSP titles were in the preliminary top twenty this week. Disgaea Portable with Network Play sold 18,000 to 22,000 units its debut. The title with PSPs greatest legs, Monster Hunter Portable 2, sold another 10,000 to 13,000 units this week. PSP hardware sales should remain in the 70,000 to 95,000 range.
DS Software Seven DS titles were in the preliminary top twenty this week. The top title across all platforms this week was Professor Layton and Pandoras Box which debuted to sales of 340,000 to 380,000 units. Dragon Quest IV saw a huge drop off in sales from last week, but still managed to sell 76,000 to 80,000 units. Yu-Gi-Oh: Duel Monsters World Championship 2008 debuted to sales of 40,000 to 45,000 units this week. Mario Party DS sold another 44,000 to 50,000 units this week, and it may be under-represented in the preliminary data. Final Fantasy Tactics sold 22,000 to 26,000 units this week, while DS Drum Master sold another 16,000 to 20,000 units. Lastly, Dinosaur King sold another 9,000 to 12,000 units this week. DS hardware sales should be up significantly this week on the release of Professor Layton to 140,000 to 180,000 units.
