Distance coming to PlayStation 4 in 2015

Distance, the Kickstarted “experimental survival racing” game from Refract Studios, is coming to PlayStation 4, the developer announced.

The game “takes the intense action of arcade racing and places it in an explorable, atmospheric world,” according to developer Jordan Hemenway. It offers “mysterious and deadly environments” with “treacherous obstacles,” tasking players with surviving points A to B, rather than doing laps on a loop. Your car, fortunately, allows you to “boost, jump, rotate, and fly,” and lets players take their own paths instead of constrain them to a single track. “You can even drive upside down or on buildings and walls parkour-style,” Hemenway said.

Multiplayer will also be available. Modes include:

Sprint Mode - A quick dash to the finish with the goal being the fastest time. As you boost, your car’s core systems will begin to overheat, so to maintain the fastest speed you’ll have to land tricks (like backflips or barrel rolls) to stay cool.

Reverse Tag Mode - Remain “it” for as long as possible. As other players start closing in you might want to scale a building for a quick escape, or dive bomb from a high point to use gravity to your advantage. Using car rotation to transition out of flight might be the best way to keep your momentum and stay in the lead.

There is also a single-player Adventure Mode that takes you through a short story where you learn each of the car’s abilities and how to use them to survive the game’s deadly environments.

If you’re at PlayStation Experience in Las Vegas this weekend, the game will be playable on PlayStation 4. Watch the console announcement trailer below.

JustyxNasty Vita port announced

Japanese PC developer Whirlpool has announced that it’s bringing over its visual novel JustyxNasty: Maou Hajimemashita to PS Vita in spring 2015 via GN Software.

In a nutshell, JustyxNasty takes place at Sousei Zouma Academy, which is itself a merging of two distinct schools as a result of dwindling birth rates. These schools, Sousei Academy and Zouma Academy, served to bring up heroes and demon lords, respectively, and were in extremely close proximity to one another, making conflicts between each school’s students a routine occurrence. Nevertheless, just because all of the students are under one roof doesn’t mean the fighting has passed. Far from it, in fact, with even the headmasters of the two schools unable to get along well. It’s within this environment that players are put in the shoes of a young man who’s trying to become a demon lord at the behest of his father and is forcibly transferred into Sousei Zouma Academy to take part in its gifted student program, right when the fighting on both sides is about to reach its breaking point.

The storyline is written by Koroya Kimura, while the character designs are being handled by Mamizu Mikagami, with chibi character designs specifically by Retoma Kuro. Although the original PC version was an erotic visual novel, as is routine in these sorts of ports, it’s to be expected that sexual content will be edited out of the Vita version.

Beyond that, the game will come in two flavors, standard and deluxe. The standard edition is priced at 5800 yen if bought digitally and 6800 yen if purchased at retail. The deluxe version, meanwhile, has no set price as of yet, but is announced to include an original drama CD and a “deluxe school calendar.”

Thanks, Sokuho@Hokanko.

First look at Metropolis Defenders

Famitsu has gone up with its online preview for Zettai Geigeki Wars: Metropolis Defenders, Acquire’s newly announced strategy game for PS3 and PS Vita.

(When it first leaked from Weekly Famitsu, Japanese blogs didn’t list a PS3 version. Famitsu’s online preview confirms the game’s multiplatform release.)

Zettai Geigeki Wars: Metropolis Defenders Zettai Geigeki Wars: Metropolis Defenders

Metropolis Defenders puts players at the helm of a fortress city surrounded by rings. Each ring can be rotated like a turntable, and when an enemy appears, players have to turn the rings so that fortified positions can properly ward it off. In between defense phases, there is also a development phase that allows players to construct and strengthen the city’s armaments.

Below are a look characters Lovelock, who is in charge of guns control, and Touwa, the deputy commander.

Lovelock (voiced by Toshiyuki Toyonaga) is described as a 24 year-old arms commander with a hot-headed personality and the weapons to back it up. Hardly the smartest person around, he exhibits a go-getter attitude no matter what he’s up to and is somehow always able to come away from most anything feeling like it turned out okay in the end. He has a fondness for Gadgets and is constantly asking himself about the true nature of “being cool.”

Touwa (voiced by M.A.O), meanwhile, is a woman in her 20s who’s second in command. A highly strategic person, she thinks two or three moves in advance and is adaptive to changing battlefield conditions. She loves candy and reading books and is diligent about trying to keep spirits up inside the command room. Though she dreams of being of a beautiful bride one day, she’s beginning to feel like her time for that might be slipping away bit by bit. During gameplay, she’ll provide updates on how battles are going to give players a better idea of where and how to set up their units.

A release date for Metropolis Defenders has not been announced.
