Star Wars Rebel Strike: Rogue Squadron III
As most people expected, SWRS:RS III has landed with a bang here at the Nintendo booth in Los Angeles, where we were allowed to watch a few levels of the game in action and even play it for ourselves.
What is most striking about the title, as most people probably guessed, is the graphical splendor. There were more than a few ooh’s and ahh’s in the crowd, but you could tell the real Star Wars fans in the audience by the way their faces twitched and they fell to the floor in foamy joygasm. Since I had taken my geek pills beforehand, I resisted my urge to squeal like a Japanese schoolgirl and sat down for a nice show.
The first level shown was the speederbike level which most people remember from The Return of the Jedi. First of all, the forest looks pretty good, although not as detail as I would have expected, but to be fair, you’re not going to be watching the foliage since taking your eyes off of the screen will definitely cause you to run into branches or tree stumps, and nobody wants to go out like that, do they? Use your radar to find where storm troopers are following you on their own bikes so you can be ready to use your blaster to send them to the big Star Destroyer in the sky.
The second level we played was the familiar Hoth level, but rather than simply having your x-wing to make your way through the level, you effectively become Luke Skywalker and your mission is to take down AT-AT’s using only a rope, a blaster and a light saber.
If you have any doubts about how the level will look, please wrap them up in an airtight trashbag and throw them into a volcano. OI VEY, the AT-AT (giant snow-walkers) look AMAZING. They tower above Luke realistically, and as blasters fire off around you (and at you), it’s up to Luke to dodge and weave his way through the giant Walker’s legs to allow a good shot directly up at the belly of the beast in order to throw a bomb into the casing so that you can take down the Walker in order to allow your convoy to escape the planet. Joy.
The last level I saw was a dogfight between two gamers as they were thrown into an asteroid level. From what I could tell, players can choose from up to 8 types of ships (stats and abilities of the ships are displayed), some ships that were features include Y-Wings, X-Wings, Boba’s slave ship and others, which may have simply been playable for the demo but were there none-the-less.
Of course the level looked immaculate. I have no problems stating that this game looks even better than Rogue Squadron 2, but unfortunately since both players were novices (in other words had no idea what they were doing), the only impressive thing I saw was a few Tie Fighters explode in flames and the players continually fly directly into the asteroids floating around them.
Overall the game is looking amazing and Factor 5 has included some innovation to the series by allowing your character to get out of the ships and take your battle to the floor. More details to come as GCA gets back down to the show floor to collect information for all of our awesome readers. Much, much more to come, stick with us.
