Ubisoft Montreal CEO Talks Plans for Revolution, E3 2006
by Shawn White (04/13/06)
In a recent interview with gaming site Gamasutra, the recently-promoted CEO of Ubisoft's Montreal Studio Yannis Mallat discussed the challenges of his new position, the future of the studio, as well as its plans for Nintendo's next-console, code-named Revolution.
When asked how many total games the Montreal Studio currently has in development, Mallat stated "more than twelve, less than twenty," with a number of them slated for next-generation consoles, though he did not mention specific platforms. Regarding how many of those games might be for Revolution, Mallat responded:
"I can say definitely, as any other developer, we are looking at this magical platform, and we want to be part of the adventure. You know already that Red Steel is made public in Game Informer. That's an exclusive Ubisoft title, made in Ubisoft Paris. And I'm pretty sure we'll see other Revolution games from Ubisoft. And some of them, I'm sure, will be made from Montreal."
Ubisoft's Montreal Studios currently employs approximately 1400 people, making it one of the French publisher's largest development houses. The studio is best known for its work on the Prince of Persia series.
Ubisoft's worldwide CEO Yves Guillemot recently told news site MCV that he is directing the focus of his company's studios primarily towards European and American markets, given the difficulties in marketing and selling Ubisoft's games in the Japanese retail space. How this decision might affect the nature of the Montreal Studio's titles has yet to be seen.
Revolution Report will be on-hand at E3 in May which, according to Mallat, "will have incredible games that no one knows about yet" from the Montreal Studio, some being new IPs and others being "fantastic games among existing brands". Ubisoft's Revolution-exclusive launch title Red Steel is also expected to be playable at the show.
