Richtig geil! Aber mit Ratchet und Clank konnte man eh noch nie so wirklich was falsch machen! :)

ony sucks sometimes. No, I'm not talking about firmware, price points, or XMB issues; my problem comes down to the fact that the company refuses to let me show you Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time.

See, I just got done playing the first five levels of Insomniac's latest opus, and the one thing I've come away with is that -- for my money -- this is one of the best looking titles on the PlayStation 3 to date. I mean, some of the cutscenes border on Pixar quality and the in-game action is no slouch either. Still, even though I have the disk in my hand and am sitting slack-jawed in front of my TV, Sony refuses to let me capture the bright, colorful action and post it here.

Sigh. Life just isn't fair sometimes… at least on your end of the equation.

Now, playing the game from the beginning puts me in an unenviable situation. I just want to sit here and rattle off thing after thing that happened in the title, but some of you would then complain and complain in the comments section that I was spoiling the game for you. I get that, but it still makes it incredibly difficult to describe what I did without blowing anything for you. If you're super-sensitive to that kind of thing, I'll direct you to my Clank-based preview that dealt with the little guy's puzzle solving on the Great Clock and my Ratchet-based preview that covered space travel and the awesomeness of hover boots.

From here on out, I'm going to talk about things I saw while generalizing the best I can and keeping you entertained. If you're a crybaby, feel free to stop reading now. I'll even give you a summary of this game: it's going to be very good and you should start setting aside pennies to buy it.

Once the game boots up, a lens cap comes off the screen and shapes begin to take focus. We're presented with Captain Qwark on a press junket for his new film "My Blaster Runs Hot." Problem is that instead of asking him all about his new flick, the off-screen interviewer only wants to know about Ratchet and Clank. This delightful segment is peppered with Qwark-isms (his ignorance to Ratchet being the last Lombax, his generalization of what happened to Clank, and so on) and the events of Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction as well as Ratchet and Clank Future: Quest for Booty.

Briefed on just what the heck is happening, the action picks up with Dr. Nefarious gloating over Clank in a stasis chamber. The Zoni (those creatures that kidnapped Clank in Tools of Destruction) show up, Nefarious mouths off, and Clank is awake and on the run. Now, rather than jump to those puzzle parts I linked to before, this is Clank's introduction to the world of the Great Clock, the place of his creation at the center of the universe. Here, there are these sections of blue light shining down that both stop and reverse time. For Clank, these segments mainly involved platforms breaking apart and coming back together. You know, towers of rock that are fine one second and then floating into hanging platforms the next. Our robot friend makes his way across, breaks some boxes, grabs some bolts, and the world keeps on turning.

When the action kicks back to Ratchet, the Lombax and Captain Qwark are crashing onto a planet ruled by the Fongoids. Suddenly the place is overrun by those purple mushroom-looking guys we've seen before and Ratchet is on the case. Again, I'm not going to delve into the nitty gritty, but you're breaking boxes with your wrench (remember, you can throw it and have it bring back bolts), double-jumping, and buying new weapons.

As always, acquiring the new weapons is pretty dang cool. On top of bringing home items such as the burping Sonic Eruptor and easily upgradeable Constructo Pistol, each new weapon you grab from a salesman station comes with a funky little instructional pitch video that seems like one of those serials from the '50s -- a static background, different cutouts of a simply drawn Ratchet reacting, and a goofy voiceover. Plus, Ratchet's robo-bodyguard Mr. Zurkon is back and as funny as ever with lines such as "Yoo-hoo, Mr. Zurkon is looking to kill you."

Again, this sucks. I really don't want to sit here and spoil what I saw for you. The platforming was solid while providing a challenge and welcome throwback to the spinning flame arms of the old Mario games, the dialogue was entertaining with plenty of LOL-worthy jabs, and this game is visual sex. I realize I get crap for being a "Sony Fanboy" all the time (Have you seen my GTA: Chinatown Wars preview?), but Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time looks great, and this is coming from someone who wasn't all that impressed with Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction. It was fun, but it didn't get my blood pumping. A Crack in Time has me ready and waiting for Oct. 27, 2009.

If you have a device that'll put you in suspended animation for a little more than a month, I suggest you get in it now.
