Sony’s SVP Gives New Info on the PS4′s Noise Level, Power Consumption, Media Performance and More

Sony Computer Entertainment Japan and Asia Senior Vice president and Director of Business Unit 1 Masayasu Ito isn’t as well known as Shuhei Yoshida between PlayStation fans, but given his technical role he’s the best person to ask about some of the most technical aspects of the upcoming PS4. Today he gaver some extremely interesting information about the console as part of an interview on the Japanese tech site AV Watch.

Here’s a summary of the most relevant points:

While being always online is not necessary, a network connection is important to fully enjoy the features of the PS4.

The PS4 will initially act as a stand-alone web server for the PlayStation App. In the future there’s the possibility of this to be expanded through the cloud, with the PS4 and PlayStation App interacting through the cloud, allowing cooperative play between multiple players.

The secondary chip for ultra-low power operation will mostly activate at night from 1 to 4 AM and download any required update automatically. It will also activate when software is purchased through external means like the PlayStation App.

Power consumption will vary greatly depending on the performance of the game played.

The noise level of the console during operation is generally much smaller than it was on the PS3.

The PS4′s cooling fan has a low noise level and stepless speed control (meaning that it will increase its speed to match heat smoothly and not in sudden steps like the one on the PS3).

Since the Blu-Ray player is 6x instead of 2x in speed (like the one on the PS3 was) the initial spinning noise is actually louder, but that will be countered by using the hard disk drive.

The Audio/Video performance (for movies and music) of the PS4 will target PS3 levels at launch, but will be improved through updates, for instance with the addition of 4K, as Sony is also an Audio/Video company.

The theme of the PS4 is “Personalization”, meaning that it will offer an experience tailored to each individual.

There you have it: looks like quite a lot of thought has gone into making the PS4 easier on your ears (the stepless fan controll is a big improvement there) and on your power consumption. We’ll have to see how this will actually work in real life, but the data provided by Ito-san is definitely interesting.

Ganz kurz, auch wenn es OT sein sollte: ist das Amazon-typisches Verhalten? Stornierung bei Adressänderung? Die Option wird doch sogar bei der Vorbestellung selbst angezeigt? :-?

also ich hatte das problem damals bei der wii u blushed
hier musste ich auch die adresse ändern. habe diesbzgl. mit dem support gechattet und wurde "gewarnt", dass bei nachträglichen änderungen an der bestehenden bestellung die bestellung quasi wieder wie eine neubestellung zum zeitpunkt der änderung gelten würde.

meine wii u habe ich aber trotzdem pünktlich gekriegt, aber da war der andrang ja auch bei weitem nicht so stark wie bei der ps4. also ich persönlich würde es bei einer bestehenden vorbestellung nicht riskieren.

also fazit: ich wurde von amazon direkt darauf hingewiesen, kann die aussage aber bisher nicht bestätigen

Earlier in the year, Eidos Montreal talked about a Swoop dash ability Garrett has that can be activated by tilting the DualShock 4 pad. The developer also said it was experimenting with a candle-blowing mechanic triggered by players blowing on the microphone of the PS4's bundled headset, but said it wouldn't include it if it turned out too gimmicky. Gibt es die PS4 eigentlich noch irgendwo zum Vorbestellen mit einer garantierten Lieferung zum Launch? Amazon hat einfach meine Vorbestellung storniert, nachdem ich meine Adresse geändert habe, weil ich ja umgezogen bin. Erst war mir das ja nicht so wichtig, aber mittlerweile tendiere ich doch wieder zu einem Launchkauf.

Dann brauchst du dir keine Sorgen zu machen . Mich trifft das gleiche Schicksal (Umzug--> Adressänderung, Zahlung per Lastschrift) und es ist nichts passiert, nachdem ich die Adresse geändert habe. Ich denke, dass das Risiko primär für die Rechnungszahler gilt.

PS: Nachsendeauftrag für Pakete kostet (zu den 16,50€) nochmal 6,90€ extra pro Paket, würde sich imo nicht lohnen.

Aber vorsicht! Briefsendungen zahlt man pauschal, Päckchen werden separat abgerechnet mit 6,90 Euronen jeweils!

Ich konnte übrigends die Adresse ohne Probleme ändern im August und meine Vorbestellung vom 28. Mai besteht noch immer. Lieferadresse zu ändern ist definitiv kein Problem.

Mich würde mal die Lautstärke der PS4 interessieren (Lüftergeräusch, etc.)

- Da der Blu-ray Player mit 6-facher Geschwindigkeit läuft (PS3: 2-fach), ist das Laufwerk lauter als bei der PS3.

- Der Lüfter der PS4 hat eine stufenlose Regelung, die sich der jeweiligen Betriebstemperatur der Konsole exakt anpasst. Dadurch fährt der Lüfter auch nicht so laut und abrupft hoch wie bei der PS3, wenn die Konsole zu heiß wird.

- Das Betriebsgeräusch der PS4 ist generell leiser als bei der PS3.

- Der Stromverbrauch der Konsole hängt stark davon ab, wie viel Leistung des jeweilige Spiel benötigt.

- Ein extrem stromsparender Chip wird nachts von 01:00 Uhr bis 04:00 Uhr aktiv, um z.B. Updates automatisch herunterzuladen. Er wird auch aktiv, wenn mit einem externen Gerät (z.B. der PlayStation App) Software gekauft wird.

Ich glaube das beantwortet die wichtigsten Fragen.
