‘One Piece: Heart of Gold’ Guest Interview and Staff Comments

On May 23, the official One Piece website released additional information for the upcoming movie tie-in anime special One Piece: Heart of Gold, set to premiere on Fuji TV channels on July 16 at 9 P.M. and run until 11:10 P.M. (JST). The post also included comments from the staff, as well as an interview with guest voice actor Shun Oguri, who will be voicing the villain Mad Treasure in the TV special, which we have translated below.

Please share us your thoughts on voice acting.

Oguri: It was fun! I voiced a villain, so I acted my best to make him feel like one. I’d be really happy if I managed to nail it.

What are your thoughts on the visual design of Mad Treasure?

Oguri: He looks pretty funky. I think he’s a new type of character that we haven’t seen in One Piece before.

One Piece is well-known for unique speech quirks in villains…

Oguri: Mad Treasure’s laughter is expressed as “Jyarararara” (jyara jyara is a Japanese onomatopoeia for the rustling of chains), so when I received my script I thought, “How in the world am I going to pull this off?” *laughs* But being embarrassed wouldn’t have gotten us anywhere, so I gave it my all from my first “jyarararara.”

How did you feel when you were offered to voice-act for One Piece?

Oguri: I was ecstatic! I actually received an offer once before, but I didn’t think my voice would fit the role. But Mad Treasure, I thought I could manage… I was glad to have received a great role.

How was your experience playing a villain’s role?

Oguri: If you’re going to be in One Piece at all, you might as well play the boss villain’s role. In One Piece Film: Gold, Kazuhiro Yamaji is voicing the boss villain (Gild Tesoro). I’ll be honest — I wish I could have played Yamaji’s role. *laughs*

What are your impressions about “One Piece: Heart of Gold”?

Oguri: The character I voiced, Mad Treasure, has the reputation of being a ruthless treasure hunter, but he’s just driven by a simple and pure desire for treasure, so I think he may not seem as despicable as you’d imagine, surprisingly. He’s going to fight the Straw Hat crew to find a hidden treasure, so I think it’s a great adventure story very fitting for One Piece.

A message to the audience, please.

Oguri: Mad Treasure is a character I helped bring to life by overcoming new challenges myself, so I hope you’ll accept him and enjoy the show. By all means, please do watch One Piece: Heart of Gold.

As mentioned in an earlier post, Mad Treasure is a chain human who ate the 「ジャラジャラの実」(romanized as “Jyara Jyara no Mi”), and can materialize chains anywhere from his body. He is hired by Gild Tesoro to search for Pure Gold, and goes after Olga, who holds the key to its whereabouts. Surprisingly (or maybe not so surprisingly), Nami has met Treasure before! And meeting him once again will trigger memories of her horrible past…

Comments from the staff

Planning: Yuta Kano (Fuji TV)

While this TV special does tie in to the movie, it is a story that will reach its conclusion within this single episode, so I hope the audience will be able to enjoy it for what it is. For this TV special, director Nagamine and the entire staff tried to come up with “a super entertaining story that won’t be overshadowed by the movie.” Our screenwriter Kuroiwa, as he did with the movie, packed this episode with so much material that can only be expressed effectively through animation — they’re all very fitting for One Piece. As for the title, I believe those who will understand will understand, so we’ll await the audience’s response after the special premieres. We also felt strongly about wanting to “see Shun Oguri fight Luffy as a villain,” so we asked for his contribution. As expected, his voice and acting are both wonderful, so please look forward to it.

Planning: Hiroyuki Sakurada (Toei Animation)

This TV special will be brought to you in conjunction with this summer’s biggest theatrical masterpiece, One Piece Film: Gold, set to premiere on July 23. And from the staff of One Piece Film: Gold, this special has screenwriter Tsutomu Kuroiwa, director Tastuya Nagamine from One Piece Film: Z, and Eiichiro Oda designing the guest characters and outfits for the Straw Hats. This TV special is a work of your wildest dreams with the best of the best staff members involved, and with outstanding guests like Shun Oguri on board! The story and pacing a so thrilling that you won’t have time to breathe, and with the Straw Hats running wild for a full two hours, this TV special will be an adventure unlike any other! While we can guarantee that this TV special alone will be 120% enjoyable , the entertainment value will have a synergy effect if you watch it together with One Piece Film: Gold! Please enjoy!

As mentioned previously, Tastuya Nagamine (director of One Piece Film: Z) will reprise his role as director of this TV special, and Tsutomu Kuroiwa was announced the screenwriter. Kuroiwa is also the screenwriter for One Piece Film: Gold, and One Piece: Heart of Gold will be his first time writing for a TV anime.

Synopsis of One Piece: Heart of Gold

As the Straw Hats continue their adventure in the New World, they meet a mysterious girl by the name of Olga. Despite her cute appearance, she is barbarous and cynical in nature. She is also on the run from the Navy and a powerful treasure hunter named Mad Treasure. The reason for their pursuit lies in Olga’s birthplace — the island of iron and steel production, “Alchemy,” which suddenly disappeared 200 years ago. A metal that was created there, the “Pure Gold,” is said to be worth a sum so extraordinary that it could buy the entire world and thus, has been sought after since long ago. Olga managed to escape Alchemy by chance but was caught by the Navy. Gild Tesoro, who controls the Navy HQ and the black market, learns of this survivor from Alchemy and hires Mad Treasure to track her down. Despite having difficulties getting along with the stubborn Olga, Luffy decides to set out to go treasure hunting for the coveted Pure Gold. Olga, in the meanwhile, plots to take advantage of the Straw Hats to strike it rich with the Pure Gold. The Straw Hats are excited in anticipation of this mysterious treasure. With the most powerful treasure hunter against them, will they be able to acquire the legendary treasure — the Pure Gold?

As for the simulcast, no official announcement has been made as of yet. Since there is still some time remaining, you can voice your opinion to FUNimation and Crunchyroll for a possible simultaneous premiere of One Piece: Heart of Gold for the fans residing outside of Japan.

One Piece Film: Gold Voice Recording Completed

The official Twitter account for One Piece Film: Gold tweeted earlier today on May 25 that the dubbing process of One Piece Film: Gold has now been completed.

We have known that Kendo Kobayashi, an actor who has appeared in live-action films such as Yatterman and Ghostwriter Hotel, will be playing the role of the gargantuan Dice. The veteran actor Arata Furuta is set to play two characters: Kent Beef Jr. and his partner, Pork. Korokke will voice a turtle car racer named Jimmy Meyers, as well as the red-eyed guard owls seen in the trailer. While Nadaru, a “Koro Koro Chicken Peppers” comedy duo member, will take on the role of Mokin, a member of the Long Long Pirates.

In addition, it was announced a while ago that among the voice actors who will reprise their roles, Tomokazu Seki will voice Rob Lucci, Masaya Onosaka will reprise his role as Spandam, and the famous revolutionary duo of Sabo and Koala will be voiced by Tōru Furuya and Satsuki Yukino.

‘One Piece Film: Gold’ Straw Hats Interview Part 2 – Kazuki Yao

On May 25, the official One Piece website posted the second part of its series of special interviews to commemorate the imminent theatrical release of One Piece Film: Gold. These interviews are featured in “Usopp’s ‘This is Real! GOLD'”, a column on the One Piece website run by Usopp’s Japanese voice actor Kappei Yamaguchi. Each voice actor from the Straw Hat crew will be interviewed in this series of special interviews, with Yamaguchi starting off this relay by being the interviewee of his own column last week. This week’s special guest is the Japanese voice actor of Franky, Kazuki Yao.

Kappei: On today’s “Usopp’s ‘This is Real! GOLD’,” Yao from the Straw Hat crew came to visit! I’ll be asking you a lot of questions about One Piece and Film: Gold. Glad to have you with us today!

Yao: It’s my pleasure!

Kappei: You’ve actually been involved with the One Piece anime for a long time. Your first appearance is actually pretty close to Usopp’s.

Yao: As fate would have it, yes.

Kappei: Because you appeared as Jango from the Black Cat Pirates and fought Usopp. *laughs* Later followed by Bon-chan, and then Franky. In terms of screen time, you might have put in the longest after Luffy.

Yao: Nah, that’s stretching it a bit… Wouldn’t Nami or Zoro have been around longer?

Kappei: The Straw Hat crew were absent during the Paramount War arc, so you’ve probably put in more time in total compared to the rest of us.

Yao: Man, I’m so glad I did Bon-chan. I really consider myself lucky.

Kappei: So let me be upfront about this question: Who is your favorite between Jango, Franky, and Bon-chan?

Yao: Bon-chan seems to be the most popular. It’s only recently that people began recognizing me as the guy who voices Franky when I walk around town. Back when Franky first appeared, most people still recognized me as Bon-chan, so I used to think that Franky wasn’t popular.

Kappei: No way! Franky is overwhelmingly popular with the kids, especially the boys!

Yao: Yeah, Eiichiro (Oda) used to say from way back that Franky’s target audience are the boys, so he’s got that down.

Kappei: By the way, do you remember what it was like when it was decided that you would be voicing Franky?

Yao: To be frank, I gave Bon-chan my all so I was already burnt out. I was under the assumption that my work has been done in the One Piece anime.

Kappei: *laughs*

Yao: But then, Eiichiro called me on the phone and asked me what kind of character I wanted, so I told him to figure it out himself. Though I did stress that I didn’t want this character to be a magician or an okama.

Kappei: And so we ended up with a cyborg. *laughs* What was your first impression of Franky?

Yao: I explain this often: Eiichiro and I are pretty close pals, but I’ve never hung out with him wearing nothing but an underwear before.

Kappei: *laughs* Actually, I’m the one who walks around in my underwear.

Yao: Right. And yet, why is Franky the speedo guy!?

Kappei: You used to undress both publicly and privately in the past, so maybe he got an idea from somewhere.

Yao: I’ve become more reserved recently and keep my clothes on these days. *laughs* But for Franky, maybe there was an intent of forgetting about what’s been done already and starting over from scratch.

Kappei: Conversely, has Franky affected you in any way?

Yao: I used to live freely and do things my way up until now, but I began feeling responsible about not destroying the dreams of children who look up to Franky.

Kappei: Yeah, you only drink coke when there are kids around.

Yao: Yeah. Mayumi (Luffy’s voice actress) and I went out to eat this one time, and as I was sipping my iced tea, this kid came up to me and said, “Aww, it’s not coke.” The shock hit me so hard. So in that sense, I think voicing Franky gave me the opportunity to grow as a better person, too.

Kappei: Looking at Franky’s design sheets, he’s undergone significant growth, or rather, his appearance really changed. He used to look more human before.

Yao: Yeah. This one looks like a legit human.

Kappei: Indeed. And even after the time-skip, he’s only a cyborg on his front side since he still can’t reach his back on his own. I really love when Robin sees this and remarks, “You haven’t changed a bit, Franky.”

Yao: Me too. When he was told at point-blank range that he hadn’t changed and was just appalled.

Kappei: Maybe Robin is the type of person who sees you for who you are inside. It was a very humorous gag given Franky’s extraordinary exterior. Have you changed your acting at all after the time-skip?

Yao: Since two years were supposed to have passed, I took it upon myself to change something and began rolling my R’s stronger. I didn’t expect it to be as fun as it is and got carried away.

Kappei: You roll words that don’t start with a R these days, too.

Yao: Yeah, even the non-R’s sound rolled.

Kappei: Which Franky do you like, Yao?

Yao: If you put them side by side like that, I guess the human one.

Kappei: *laughs* But you have way more special moves now.

Yao: Well, he is a robot now.

Kappei: And that’s exactly why he’s so cool! You have a favorite move too, right?

Yao: The Nipple Light.

Kappei: And that’s something that Franky couldn’t have done before. But out of all the other attacks that he has like Strong Right, you pick that one.

Yao: Oh, but General Franky feels great. I can become my own Chōgōkin (超合金 — a brand of robot and character toys released by Popy in 1972. The brand continues to exist today through Bandai).

Kappei: Franky is so unique. He used to come off as a little crazy back when he was first introduced, but he’s actually one of the most mature members of the crew, with actual common sense.

Yao: Yeah, and I also dig how he’s easily moved to tears. Being able to shed tears means he’s got a pure heart.

Kappei: He still has a human heart despite his robotic exterior.

Yao: Yeah. His back and his feelings are still human.

Kappei: Then, how about your favorite line from Franky, or let’s say you’re asked to quote something from him. What comes to mind?

Yao: Hands down, “Super.”

Kappei: I see, right. That really has become his strongest symbol.

Yao: When I’m at an event and tell the audience, “Let’s do the usual!”, everyone gets it, so I feel responsible to treasure this signature phrase.

Kappei: I see. I’d love to keep asking you more about Franky, but we’re running out of time, so let’s talk about the movie. It’s been four years since the last movie, Film: Z. What were some of your impressions upon reading the script for Film: Gold?

Yao: The story is glorious, but man do we have some amazing guests. A lot of these people are quite the characters themselves with very strong personalities, so I’m very curious how much of their colors this movie is going to reflect. A part of me is excited with anticipation that it’s really going to turn GOLD.

Kappei: It really does live up to the name Film: Gold.

Yao: Yeah. My only regret is that I couldn’t dub together with Kitaōji, who voiced Rayz Max.

Kappei: I laughed so hard when I read Max’s introduction scene in the script.

Yao: Ah, that one. Also, there’s a key word that’s going to be used, and Franky says some things in reaction to what Max has to say, so I really wish I could have seen how Kitaōji acted that scene out before I dubbed my part.

Kappei: I hear you. We’ll change the subject a bit. In this movie, we’ll be carrying out team battles, and I believe Franky was with Luffy. It feels like an unprecedented combination.

Yao: That’s right, we hardly ever teamed up together before.

Kappei: How was being paired up with Luffy like?

Yao: I mentioned this earlier but Franky is mature, so he keeps an eye on everyone objectively. And especially with Luffy, I think Franky stands in a position where he can reassure Luffy, “I’ve got your back in the end, so don’t worry.” So I was really happy this time that Franky was placed close enough to be able to help out Luffy should things go wrong.

Kappei: I really enjoyed watching the scenes with Luffy and Franky myself. Gosh, this movie is just so flashy and full of excitement with the cast and the story and everything.

Yao: As it should be. The staff went on a long-term location hunt in Las Vegas just for this movie.

Kappei: They sure have. It makes you wonder whether they really had to stay out there for so long. *laughs* Have you been to any casinos before?

Yao: I’ve been to Macau before. The city was all flashy but the actual casino had a chic atmosphere with no dress code, so it felt very accessible.

Kappei: Huh, I had no idea. Speaking of dress codes, what did you think of the costumes this time? Franky’s outfits are always cute, but the outfit from the opening this time is especially adorable!

Yao: I was all, “What the heck is this!?” when I first saw it.

Kappei: Ah, so you thought so too? Same here. *laughs* Hm hmm. Perhaps the mystery of this costume will come to light at a later time…? Or so I’m told, folks.

Yao: Also, this costume is a topic covered in the 53rd part of Professor Greg’s SUPER “OP” Course! Or so the producer told me to say. *laughs*

Kappei: *laughs* And lastly, the dubbing process may be all done now, but please share us your enthusiasm for this movie!

Yao: All nine Straw Hats were able to gather in one place after a long time, so I hope you’ll enjoy what each character has to offer. And if you go see the movie, you might understand why Franky has an admiration for Rayz Max. Please go check it out in theaters and give it some thought.

Five New Characters Unveiled for One Piece Film: Gold

In the 26th issue of Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, five new characters have been unveiled for One Piece Film: Gold. The full translation is as follows:

One Piece Film: GoldAlba (voiced by Nanase Nishino):
Nanase Nishino – a member of Nogizaka46 and a model for non-no.
“It was my first time voice acting, and I never imagined that my first dubbing job would be for a One Piece movie, so I was very happy. My favorite One Piece character is Kaku from CP9! I love his speech quirk and his round eyes! *laughs* I believe this movie lives up to its name, Gold, and will be dazzling and exciting, so I’m looking forward to it myself. I hope you’re all looking forward to it, too.”

Carb/Curve (voiced by Ryō Narita):
Ryō Narita – an actor and model for MEN’s NON-NO
“Everyone knows One Piece, and I’m so happy that I was able to be a part of it as an inhabitant of that world. My favorite characters are Zoro and Sanji. We already have Luffy as the main character, so isn’t it amazing that we get two handsome characters as part of the same crew? *laughs* I played a very minor part, but it was still very hard to convey my acting through my voice alone in an empty room. I gave it my absolute best effort though, so I hope you’ll try to find me!”

“Unlike conventional acting, stepping into the world of manga is very difficult, so I was nervous, but I was still given the pleasure of playing this role while consulting with the director. “When I received the offer I was so excited that I’d be appearing in THAT One Piece, but I was very nervous since it was my first time voice acting. My favorite character is Chopper and reading the Drum Island arc made me cry a river. I’m really excited that my recorded voice will combine with the pictures and will become a part of the One Piece world. Please come watch it in theaters.”

One Piece Film: Gold is set to release in Japan on July 23. One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda will reprise his role as the executive producer of the movie. The film will be directed by Hiroaki Miyamoto, who also worked on Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island as the assistant director, and was written by Tsutomu Kuroiwa, who wrote the live action Liar Game: The Final Stage and Liar Game: Reborn films, as well as the live-action Black Butler film. The veteran actress and musician Mayumi Kojima will provide the theme song “Gold & Jive ~ Silver Ocean” and GLIM SPANKY will provide「怒りをくれよ」(ikari wo kureyo) for One Piece Film: Gold.

One Piece Episode 745’s Title, Air Date Unveiled (Manga Spoilers!)

With the Dressrosa arc coming near to an end in the One Piece anime, we now have the title for One Piece episode 745, one of the last few canon episodes of this arc.

Entitled 「子分の盃 結成！ 麦わら大船団！」 “Exchanging the Sons’ Cups! Straw Hat Grand Fleet!”, One Piece episode 745 is scheduled to air on Sunday, June 12 (JST) on Fuji TV. Judging from the episode title, it would be safe to assume that One Piece episode 745 is likely to cover some of the content from chapter 800 of the One Piece manga.

On a related note, One Piece episode 744, 「逃場無し 大将藤虎非情の追撃！」 “No Way Out – Admiral Fujitora’s Ruthless Pursuit!”, is set to air this week on June 5 (JST). In the previous issue of Newtype magazine, the episode was called 「猛攻藤虎　天を覆う絶望の瓦礫！」 “Fujitora’s Fierce Attack – The Fatal Wreckage Which Covers the Sky”, which was supposedly changed later on.

The currently-known staff to work on One Piece episode 744 is as follows:

- Screenplay: 「冨岡淳広」 Atsuhiro Tomioka
- Episode director: 「えんどうてつや」 Tetsuya Endō
- Storyboard: 「えんどうてつや」 Tetsuya Endō
- Animation director: 「新垣重文」 Shigefumi Shingaki

Please note that the English translations for the episode titles have been done by the One Piece Podcast staff and may differ from the official translation by FUNimation and Crunchyroll.

With the Zou anime arc possibly around the corner, the One Piece fans are due for a new opening. One Piece opening 18, Hard Knock Days (by Generations from Exile Tribe), debuted with episode 687 back in April 2015. It has been more than a year at this point, so let’s hope that we get a confirmation about One Piece opening 19 fairly soon.

Support One Piece by purchasing its official releases. One Piece episodes are simulcast in a number of countries, and is currently available on the official websites for Crunchyroll, FUNimation, and One Piece Official. Anime fans can start by purchasing the big box sets that were recently released by FUNimation, containing episodes 1-299. Following that, fans can purchase the 13th, 14th, 15th and 16th installments of the One Piece collection sets. Last but not least, the remaining One Piece episodes, including episodes 397-468, are available in the voyage sets. If you are a manga fan, VIZ Manga is now selling two box sets: One Piece Box Set: East Blue and Baroque Works (volumes 1-23) and One Piece Box Set 2: Skypiea and Water Seven (volumes 24-46) on Amazon at a great price. The newly announced One Piece Box Set 3: Thriller Bark to New World (volumes 47-70) will be available for purchase from October 4.

One Piece Film Gold Scan Shows The Film’s Villain’s Shady Dealings with Doflamingo and More

Tezzoro, the main villain for One Piece Film Gold has a lengthy past, and now we can add another layer of evil under his belt!

The latest scan from Weekly Shonen Jump reveals that Tezzoro has had dealings with The Heavenly Yaksha, Donquixote Doflamingo himself! Doflamingo was known as Joker, and he’s the smile dealer of the underworld, so could Tezzoro have been buying Smile from Doffy? We’ll find out soon as One Piece: Film Gold is set to release very soon!

Beyond that we get to see Luffy in some major trouble, and we can see a confrontation between Tezzoro and Zoro, where Zoro surprisingly can’t cut through the gold that Tezzoro controls with his Gol Gol fruit!

Zoro can cut through mountains, and steel. We thought that Zoro could basically cut through anything, and so did he, this this is a huge deal. Check out the scan below for this and more!

‘One Piece Film: Gold’ Straw Hats Interview Part 3 – Yuriko Yamaguchi

On May 30, the official One Piece website posted the third part of its series of special interviews to commemorate the upcoming theatrical release of One Piece Film: Gold. Each voice actor from the Straw Hat crew will be interviewed in this series of special interviews, with Yamaguchi starting off this relay, followed by Kazuki Yao last week. This week’s special guest is the Japanese voice actress of Nico Robin, Yuriko Yamaguchi.

Kappei & Yuriko: Yaaaaaay!!!!

Kappei: So, I’m hoping to hear a lot about Nico Robin today. Happy to have you with us!

Yuriko: Likewise. Please ask me anything about Robin. <3

Kappei: To start things off, will you please tell us what it was like back when you received Robin’s role?

Yuriko: I’ll never forget that day, even to this day. You see, I was touring across Asia as part of my acting job until two days before it was decided that I would appear in One Piece.

Kappei: Touring across Asia?

Yuriko: Yeah, I was abroad for a month and a half. I hadn’t done any voice-acting jobs during that period, so I didn’t think I’d be able to voice-act upon returning to Japan. But the day after I came back, I got a phone call asking me to go work on One Piece. That’s what started it all.

Kappei: So you didn’t audition for the role?

Yuriko: I did not. I walked in not knowing anything about the character nor whether she would be a main character… I thought it was going to be a one-time role, but Mr. Uda, the director at the time, told me: “You’re staying.” And he advised I give my acting a “Kaori Momoi kind of feel” to it. *laughs*

Kappei: That’s a very specific instruction. *laughs*

Yuriko: Yes. *laughs* Of course, he didn’t want me to imitate Kaori Momoi, but he wanted me to strive for her enigmatic atmosphere. That was Miss All Sunday.

Kappei: At that time, were you already informed that she was eventually going to join the Straw Hats?

Yuriko: Yes, I was told about it by then. But they told me it wouldn’t be happening for a long while… *laughs*

Kappei: Interesting. By the way, since you’ve been a part of One Piece since Miss All Sunday, you’ve been acting with us for a long time. Have you changed the way you act at all?

Yuriko: Let’s see… For All Sunday, I was always conscious about leaving a hint of mystery to her. She would never open up to others and you just can’t tell what’s on her mind, so I wouldn’t open up to others myself as I acted. Which gives more reason to why I couldn’t wait for Robin to join the crew — I wanted her to hurry up and open up to everyone, and speak her mind naturally. Although right now, she’s not holding anything back. *laughs* Even in the sense of how I controlled my voice, I tried to lower my voice for All Sunday to make her seem more like a villain. I haven’t been too conscious about my voice after Robin joined the crew.

Kappei: I see. So right now, would you say you’re being yourself when you act as Robin?

Yuriko: Yes, so once every blue moon I’d be told, “That felt a little off for Robin,” and I’d have to re-dub it. *laughs* Even Mayumi would point out, “That was Yuriko!” straight away. I probably don’t make that much of a conscious effort to construct her character.

Kappei: You can tell just by looking at the design sheets too, but the way Robin smiles now changed so much compared to how she did back then. Back when she first appeared, her smiles still felt somewhat distant and cold, but now it feels so kind.

Yuriko: I really think so, too. Back then, she couldn’t trust people and probably didn’t open up completely even as she interacted with Luffy and the others. But now, it feels like she’s playing with them. *laughs*

Kappei: She totally is playing with them as of late. *laughs* She gives some surprisingly salty remarks sometimes, it just keeps getting funnier.

Yuriko: Right? She has an unexpected irresponsible side to her — even when she can probably fight more she’d just chuckle and spectate… *laughs*

Kappei: She was laughing when Usopp was beaten to a pulp during the Dressrosa arc, too. *laughs*

Yuriko: Now that you mention it… *laughs* Sometimes, even I wonder why she doesn’t go fight when everyone’s being beaten up. Even though she’s a part of the crew, I don’t think she’s the type to put herself in the center of the action with everyone. Instead, she’d take a step back to watch over everyone and won’t step in until things get that dire and it’s absolutely necessary that she does something. Above all, I believe a part of it is because she trusts everyone, too.

Kappei: What do you like about Robin?

Yuriko: I love everything about her, so it’s hard to specify…

Kappei: Then, may I answer on your behalf? On the way to Dressrosa, I loved how she was holding Momonosuke after their bath together.

Yuriko: I understand completely! It’s the way she’s holding him. It’s like she’s holding something very precious and consoling him. She’s very kind to Chopper too, so I don’t think it’s that she likes children in particular, but she simply loves anything cute.

Kappei: Although her standard of “cute” is a little unique. *laughs* Like how she loves Kanjuro’s drawings… But I love that part about Robin, too.

Yuriko: Me too. And another charm of hers is how she sees things objectively. Thanks to Robin, I’ve been making a conscious effort to do that myself, too.

Kappei: There are definitely times when we learn from our characters.

Yuriko: Absolutely. And I really love that about Robin. <3

Kappei: I think her attacks are cool and wonderful. Like, how she stomps on enemies with gigantic feet, and how she forms wings out of numerous hands. They feel somewhat erotic.

Yuriko: ……Sorry, I never thought of it that way before. Is that what it’s like from a male’s perspective?

Kappei: I used the word erotic, but I didn’t mean it in a bad way. *laughs*

Yuriko: Yeah, I understand. It just dawned on me as I listened to you right now.

Kappei: What’s your favorite attack move?

Yuriko: I guess “Wing”? But she can only fly for 5 seconds, so the next time I meet Oda, I might ask him to give her a few extra seconds. *laughs*

Kappei: So you want to fly more. *laughs* We’ll be changing the subject, but what’s your favorite quote by Robin?

Yuriko: “Fools who don’t respect the past are doomed to repeat it,” from the Skypiea arc, when she fights Yama.

Kappei: Not “I want to live!!!”?

Yuriko: While that’s a very strong scene too, I love Robin the most when she’s fighting while protecting the ruins. You can tell just how angry she was when she told Yama, “I won’t forgive you,” despite his pleas. In the end, history is what really drives Robin. We haven’t had such scenes recently, so it makes me love that sequence even more.

Kappei: Now, I’d like to begin asking you about One Piece Film: Gold.

Yuriko: Hmm, I wonder if I still remember it…?

Kappei: Wha-!? Hey! We dubbed it only recently!!

Yuriko: I’m just kidding. It’ll be all right, probably. *laughs*

Kappei: What were your thoughts and impressions upon reading the script for the first time?

Yuriko: What got my attention the most was that they explored friendship between girls, which was very rare, so I was very happy about that.

Kappei: Now that you mention it, it may be the first time we see something like that in a One Piece movie.

Yuriko: And the flashy style of the opening reminded me of ONE PIECE THE MOVIE: Dead End Adventure. I really loved that part of that movie.

Kappei: The pirate race scene… I guess the atmosphere does feel a little similar.

Yuriko: But this time around we had some musical factors too, so it feels much more gorgeous.

Kappei: In this movie, we’ll be having an all-out battle with all nine members of the crew together for the first time in a long while. Some of the pair-ups during the battle scenes are pretty interesting, like with Luffy and Franky…

Yuriko: Who was…with Robin again?

Kappei: Whaaaaat!? She was with Sanji, right!?

Yuriko: Oh, you meant that one. Robin was with Nami and Brook and everyone else in the beginning, so I was wondering who you meant. But I think the creators wanted to make Sanji shine more in that scene, so Robin didn’t get to fight all that much. *laughs* In fact, I think she fought with more determination after Luffy called for her.

Kappei: Only a brief moment of determination. *laughs*

Yuriko: Exactly. Honestly, I wanted her to fight more.

Kappei: Robin’s probably too strong to the point that the battle would end instantly if she fought seriously. She’s already the ultimate weapon, just like how you are our ultimate weapon, Yuriko.

Yuriko: Why? *laughs*

Kappei: *laughs* The Straw Hat crew’s fashion has been a hot topic for this movie, too. Which one do you like?

Yuriko: This time, we had the opening outfits, casino outfits, and the battle outfits — I liked Robin’s battle outfit, she looks really cool.

Kappei: I like her casino outfit, it’s cute. It’s sparkly with lamé, and she looks great with the ponytail.

Yuriko: She does. Speaking of the casino outfit, Nami’s outfit was so cute!

Kappei: Nami is really cute. Have you seen the third set of gifts they’re giving out when you pre-order the movie ticket? They’re special casino chips with illustrations drawn by Oda, and Nami has a finger to her cheek and…it’s just too cute, I wanted to scream, “Nami, that’s just not fair!!”

Yuriko: Wait, didn’t you say you liked Robin earlier? *laughs*

Kappei: It keeps changing every time. *laughs* How about you? Which character from the Straw Hats fits your type?

Yuriko: While we do have some crew members who aren’t exactly human…Usopp would be my type of guy.

Kappei: Usopp is pretty dependable despite everything.

Yuriko: He’s kind and he has the heart to accept everything about you. I think he’s the kind of guy who’s able to make girls happy.

Kappei: But Sanji’s kind, too.

Yuriko: Everyone’s kind, but the ones who get too assertive are a little… *laughs*

Kappei: Then, let’s expand our options: out of all male characters who appeared in One Piece, who would be your pick?

Yuriko: I’ve probably said this many times before, but I’d pick Montblanc Cricket — the tasteful old man who chases after his dreams, and also lives on an island with monkeys.

Kappei: You’re free to go out with him, but that sounds rough realistically speaking. *laughs*

Yuriko: Let’s leave reality off to the side for a moment. I’d love to keep cooking food for him at home.

Kappei: Even though his home is a board?

Yuriko: I love him and his home! He risks his life to go after something that he alone continues to believe in. Isn’t that amazing?

Kappei: Maybe you feel something in common with Robin who searches for the Poneglyphs. Backtracking a bit, please share us your enthusiasm for the movie.

Yuriko: Now that we’re done with the dubbing, I look forward to doing my best with the stage greetings!

Kappei: Don’t let spoilers slip anymore, okay? *laughs*

Yuriko: I seriously need to be careful about that… I’ll leave the disciplining up to you!!

Kappei: Okay. Wait, what!? Discipline who!?

Yuriko: Me. *laughs*

One Piece Opening 19 ‘We Can!’ Announced

One Piece opening 19 is finally here, and has brought a familiar face with it!

With the release of issue 27 of Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, it has been unveiled that the much-anticipated One Piece opening 19 is called 「ウィーキャン！」 “We Can!”. For the first time ever, Hiroshi Kitadani and Kishidan will do a collaboration for One Piece opening 19. Its debut date is yet to be confirmed, but it has been implied that ‘We Can!’ will debut on June 26, along with the upcoming anime filler arc.

Prior to this, Kitadani gave us the iconic opening songs We Are! and We Go!. As for Kishidan, they provided the ending theme song, “Yume Miru Koro wo Sugitemo,” for the fan-favorite 6th One Piece movie, Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island. The predecessor to opening 19, Hard Knock Days (by Generations from Exile Tribe), debuted back in April 2015 with One Piece episode 687, which is during the middle of the Dressrosa arc of the One Piece anime. Wow, that’s a long time even for One Piece.

Zou Anime Arc Key Visual, ‘Silver Mine’ Filler Announced (Spoiler Warning!)

The Zou anime arc is around the corner, and the Dressrosa arc is coming to an end soon!

Before we dive into the Zou anime arc, the next canon arc in the One Piece anime has been confirmed as a new filler arc, following Dressrosa’s conclusion. According to issue 27 of Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, the Silver Mine filler arc is set to begin from June 26, presumably along with the much-anticipated One Piece opening 19, 「ウィーキャン！」 “We Can!”. It is also mentioned that the Silver Mine arc will be tied to the upcoming movie, One Piece Film: Gold, in some way. However, the details about it are not known at the moment. The summary provided in the magazine implies that the main focus of the Silver Mine filler arc will be on Bartolomeo and Luffy.

Weekly Shonen Jump describes it as:

Bartolomeo and Luffy are kidnapped by the Silver Pirates Alliance!! Can they safely escape the giant fortress that sits atop the massive silver mines!?

Besides the filler arc, the main key visual for the upcoming Zou anime arc has also been unveiled. In addition to the Straw Hat pirates in their Zou outfits, the colored key visual features Cat Viper (also known as Nekomamushi), Dogstorm (also known as Inuarashi), Wanda, Carrot, and adds Raizo to the Wano roster. Last but not least, the key visual subtly includes Zunesha in the background as well. The official release date of the Zou anime arc will be announced some time later.

Silver Mine Arc, Dressrosa Finale Episode Titles and Schedule

Newtype magazine has unveiled the next batch of Japanese episode titles for the One Piece anime. With One Piece episode 746, the more-than-two-year long Dressrosa anime arc comes to a conclusion on June 19. In addition, as announced earlier, One Piece fans are in for a new filler arc starting from June 26. The Silver Mine arc’s plot is tied to the upcoming movie, One Piece Film: Gold.

One Piece Live-Action Movie in Works

Chinese company Shanghai Minghuan Investment Co, Ltd has announced they have a live-action One Piece movie in the works! The company bought the rights from One Piece creator, Eiichiro Oda, for 1.6 billion yen (about US$15.1 million).

They have already cast two characters – Monkey D. Luffy (the hero of the pirate series) and Charlotte Pudding (the 35th daughter of Big Mom and Straw Hat Pirate Sanji’s bride-to-be).

Luffy will be played by Japanese actor Masataka Kubota, who also played the role of Light Yagami in the live-action Japanese Death Note drama. Pudding will be played by Chinese Idol Girl Group GNZ48’s Xie Leilei. Take a look below at images of the actors and the official press release.

Story specifics were not announced, however, based on the cast of Pudding, it seems like it will cover some of the latest happenings in the manga. A release date for the One Piece live-action movie has not yet been announced either, but we hope to let you know more right here on Saiyan Island as it’s announced!

Shanghai Minghuan Investment Co., Ltd., a Chinese company based in Shanghai, recently announced that the company has bought the copyright of the popular Japanese manga and TV anime One Piece from the manga artist and owner of One Piece Eiichiro Oda for 1.6 billion Yen (US$ 15.1 million) and plans to adapt it into a live-action film.

One Piece has enjoyed widespread popularity across the globe ever since it started serializing in 1997. Although anticipations have been high from its fans, the adaptation of One Piece into a live-action film was regarded as a mission impossible due to its copyright issues. The copyright deal sealed by the Chinese company can really be an excitement to One Piece fans all over the world, as the deal will grant the company the right to develop related live-action film, TV series and other derivatives.

The company revealed that the Japanese actor Masataka Kubota will star as Monkey D. Luffy in the film, who ranked top 1 in Who They’d Like To See Play Luffy from One Piece of the poll conducted recently by Goo Ranking. Meanwhile, it would be a surprise for the fans that the heroine Charlotte Purin will not be played by a Japanese nationality, but a Chinese girl named Xie Leilei, a member of the Chinese Idol Girl Group GNZ48. She is called as The Girl from One Piece by her fans due to her resemblance to Charlotte Purin in the manga.

Scheint ja viele grade fertig zu machen. Wird hakt ein Live Action Film ala Dragonball Evolution. Schau ich mir einmal an und vergesse es dann, war klar das sowas kommt, gebraucht hätte es das nicht aber schaden wirds One Piece auch nicht.
