Ok fellas, where to begin.
I and a select group of others were invited last year to see the progression of MLB '11's development. We spent a good deal of time going over the things that bothered many as well as focusing on the improvements we were looking for.
There was so much that was covered that unfortunately I can't begin to touch upon it all. I will throw out some bullet points however to give you guys some things to discuss until the current attendees can report back in.
- One of the biggest additions to the game was the uniform selection screen. I love being able to select what uniform I want to have my players wear in a sports game and MLB '11 allows you to mix and match uniform hats, tops and bottoms. So you can set any combination of uni's you'd like.
-There is going to be a new feature called the Player Vault that will allow you to upload and download individual players into your roster sets. I'll avoid discussing specifics but you can simply imagine the possibilities with this now.
-Analog hitting was phenomenal. I've read worries about it being to easy or simplistic... believe it or not, the work being done "under the hood" make this simply incredible to utilize. It will allow those that want easier to access controls the ability to get involved with such a deep game. That doesn't mean it's "arcade-ish" or anything... just allows you to experience the game in a different way. It certainly freshens up the game.
-Analog throwing was well done, even in its early form. The errors toward first base on routine plays were a nice touch as well. A harder throw resulted in an over throw at times that could pull the 1B off the bag. The biggest issue a few of us had were canceling throws accidentally. To turn a double play, a few players were flicking the (right) sticks more than once to a base, causing fake throws to trigger. Obviously this is not what I wanted and even with more time and patience I can see people canceling throws "in the heat of the moment" and becoming a little frustrated.
-Analog pitching is very, very, very well done. The actual art was still a work in progress but the concept in how you pitched became second nature quickly. This almost immediately became the interface of choice for most there. You didn't feel like you could pinpoint your pitches but you definitely had control. The balance was certainly there, and actually led to a good amount of walks during head to head games.
-RTTS. There are many things that were covered here but the single biggest for me has to be the baserunning. This was immediately the area that I focused on as it was a nightmare trying to run bases last year. So a few improvements were suggested. 1) Allow us to use the buttons to queue up bases instead of holding the stick. 2) Remap the Triggers and RS to better emulate what it is like to actually lead off of a base, especially first. 3) Figure out a way to manipulate sliding and not have it conflict with controlling the camera. Much work was done in these three areas... so expect some information to come from it. Also, there were some instances where your player would be moved from their defensive position upon a pitch... that was worked on as well. Other tidbits will be revealed later.
-Coop. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW this is great. You can play with one other friend and play another duo in a game baseball. You alternate pitching every inning. Batting alternates every at-bat (if I recall correctly) and you also alternate the control of the runners. You'll learn more about this mode eventually but it is a COMPLETE BLAST to play with 3 other people, especially in front of the same TV set. Easily the most exciting new mode for me. So just to clarify, can only be 2 vs 2 max, not 3-1 or 4-0. I think you can do 2 vs the AI and you can do 2v2 online (a team of 2 must be on the same console, not 4 individual connections).
-There are many other changes to stadiums, uniforms and art being done. There are so many minor changes that were asked for... and a lot of them were being implemented.
